Top 10 World Series Champions that Haven't Repeated Since 2000

It's hard to win a World Series in baseball. But it's even harder to repeat as champions. Since 2000, there has never been a repeat champion in baseball. There have been some great teams that won the World Series one year, but were unable to repeat. That's not to say they were failures in repeating because no champion deserves to be called a failure. But the reality is that the reason they didn't repeat was that they either went through injuries, better teams, and bad breaks. It happens in sports. These are the teams since 2000 that could've repeated, but were unfortunate in doing so. (The 2018 Astros are not on this list because they might either be the best chance to repeat right now or they might be a team that doesn't even though they are in contention for years to come.)

The Top Ten
1 2009 Philadelphia Phillies The Philadelphia Phillies are an American professional baseball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Phillies compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League East division. They play their home games at Citizens Bank Park. They won the World Series in 1980 and 2008.

After winning the World Series in 2008, the Phillies fielded a better team looking to repeat in 2009. But they ran right into the New York Yankees, who won the World Series in six games.

2 2017 Chicago Cubs The Chicago Cubs are an American professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League Central division.

Despite an early struggle to the season, the Cubs bounced back and made it to their third straight NLCS. But the better-suited Los Angeles Dodgers eliminated them in five games.

3 2010 New York Yankees The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City, New York, that competes in Major League Baseball.

The Yankees might've finished with the AL Wild Card, but they threatened to head back to the World Series only to be knocked off by the Texas Rangers.

4 2002 Arizona Diamondbacks Situated in Phoenix, Arizona, this MLB team is a member of the National League West division. Known for winning the World Series in 2001, they host their games at Chase Field. Their team colors are Sedona red, black, and Sonoran sand.

Having knocked off the Yankees in the 2001 Fall Classic, the 2002 Diamondbacks appeared better than ever winning 98 games. Sadly, they were swept by the Cardinals in the NLDS.

5 2012 St. Louis Cardinals The St. Louis Cardinals are a professional baseball team based in St. Louis, Missouri. The Cardinals compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League Central division.

The Cardinals won 88 games in 2012, but did make the playoffs and were one win away from the World Series before blowing a 3-1 lead to the Giants

6 2006 Chicago White Sox Representing the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, this Major League Baseball (MLB) team is part of the American League Central division. The White Sox have won multiple World Series titles and play at Guaranteed Rate Field. Their uniform colors are black, white, and silver.

Dominating 2005, the White Sox won 90 games in 2006, but finished third in the AL Central and missed the playoffs

7 2016 Kansas City Royals This MLB team, part of the American League Central division, hails from Kansas City, Missouri. Known for their World Series titles, they play at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals' team colors include royal blue, gold, and white.

Kansas City's attempt to make it three straight World Series appearances and a repeat were stuffed by a.500 record (81-81) in 2016

Yeah that’s what happens when you’re a small market team. We end up losing all our key players and that’s why we’re back to the dark age

8 2003 Anaheim Angels The Los Angeles Angels (known as the California Angels from 1965 to 1996, the Anaheim Angels from 1997 to 2004, and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim from 2005 to 2015) are an American professional baseball franchise based in Anaheim, California, near Los Angeles. The Angels compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the American League West division.

Just like the movie, championships have to be won on their own. Unfortunately for the Angels, there would be no waves for a 77-win season.

9 2013 San Francisco Giants The San Francisco Giants are a professional American baseball team based in San Francisco. The Giants compete in Major League Baseball as part of the West division of the National League. They play their home games at Oracle Park in downtown San Francisco.

Winning their second title in three seasons in 2012, the 2013 Giants would repeat a pattern by not making the playoffs with 76 wins

10 2014 Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts, that competes in Major League Baseball.

An incredible 2013 season could not be repeated as the Red Sox missed the playoffs with 71 wins.
