Top 10 Pressure Situations in Sports

The Top Ten
1 Bases loaded, two outs, in the bottom of the ninth, and down by a run

You're at the plate knowing a base hit could win the game. But if you don't get that hit, the game is over and you lose. So it's an all or nothing scenario right there in a sport where you get a hit three times out of ten on average.

2 At the free throw line down by a point

It may look like a simple shot, but if you have those rooting against you trying to distract you, it can be pressure-packed. All you would need to do is make at least one of two to keep the game going. But if you miss both, then the odds on a loss are higher.

3 4th and Goal down by more than 3

You can't kick a field goal to tie the game because it's not required now. So you have to go for it knowing that if you score, you go ahead and win. But if you don't, it's a turnover on downs and the other team can just run out the clock for the win.

4 World Cup Knockout Stage Penalty Kicks

You get to the second round of the World Cup and suddenly, you're facing a tie game going into penalty kicks. In the best of five scenarios, you're objective is to score more goals than your opponent. Easy, right? Well, that one missed penalty kick could come back to haunt you if the opposition scores a critical one.

5 Down by one, empty net for an extra attacker on the ice

You're down a goal in the final minute and you pull your goaltender to bring an extra attacker on the ice. The good news is, you have a one-man advantage and can work to figure out a way to score the goal. The bad news is your net is empty and the other team can just go and ice the game with an empty-net goal.

6 Sudden Death Overtime in do or die game

In either hockey, or sometimes soccer, you have a tie game and extra time is needed. All it takes is one goal and you win or lose. If this were in the playoffs in a Game 7, your season ends or goes on.

7 Best of five sets, down 2-0

Whether it's volleyball or tennis, if you get behind 2-0, it's win or bust. You can't afford to lose one more or else, you're done. If you win set three, you get a chance to build momentum going into set 4. If you then win set four, there is no pressure because both sides are on the cusp of losing the match.

8 In the midst of perfection

Bowling and baseball can have perfect games. In bowling, you roll 12 strikes in a roll while in baseball, you retire all 27 batters in a row without giving up a hit or a baserunner. In the moment, you're in the zone and can't be touched. But as the game goes on, there is a tendency to let the moment overwhelm you and one slip up costs you everything. However, if you regain your composure, you can record your 12th strike or 27th out for perfection.

9 On the verge of winning the triple crown in horse racing.

To win a Triple Crown in horse racing, you need to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes all within five weeks. Each track is longer than the previous one and the media coverage might be intensified for a chance at history. Plus, you have to fend off horses that were not even in any of the first two races to win.

10 Final putt on the green to win up by a stroke.

You're up by one stroke going to the last hole. All you need is a par to win. A birdie also helps. But the one thing you can't have is a bogey or worse. If you bogey, you go to a playoff. But if you do worse than that, you don't win the golf tournament.
