Shinji Ikari Character Analysis

Elric-san Anyone who has seen Neon Genesis Evangelion knows who Shinji Ikari is. He is a wimpy, whiny, introverted protagonist who runs away from his problems. Most people hate him because of this. But why?
Okay, let's be honest here. A lot of us might hate Shinji because we see a little bit of ourselves in him. How many of you have seen a problem that seemed to difficult to handle, so you ran away from it? I've done it before. I'm sure all of us have. That probably makes Shinji one of the most realistic characters in anime.
That does not mean that he is never annoying. Oh, no. He can get so annoying that you want to choke him. Sometimes, in my opinion, he runs away for absolutely no reason. However, there is one thing that stops this from making him a hateable character. That is the fact that some of his bad decisions comes from his unhealthy mental state. To me, that just made him fascinating.
Also, if you pay attention to the anime, you see that every time Shinji runs away, he comes right back to help (except for that one time when he was gone for a few days).
In conclusion, is Shinji my favorite anime character, or even my favorite character from this show? No. I feel some characters were handled a little better than him, even just in the show. However, I appreciate him because of the fact that he is extremely realistic. I will take him any day over extremely popular anime characters that have less of a personality than dry toast *cough Tatsuya cough*.

Tatsuya... Sounds familiar... Oh wait! I know who it is! It's that "Oh, I'm such an overpowered and emotionless mature Kirito! " Tatsuya Shiba from The Irregular At Magic High School! I agree, he has no emotion whatsoever and even Kirito had more of a personality than him! I'm still watching Magic High School though, but chances are that I might most likely be ranting about his lack of emotion in an anime review. Please don't spoil anything for me yet. - visitor
