Green Bay Packers Preseason Game Analysis: Week 1- Packers vs. Titans

PackFan2005 On August 9th, 2018, the Green Bay Packers faced the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field in Week 1 of the 2018 NFL Preseason.

Score
Packers: 31
Titans: 17

Let’s analyze key Packers players that contributed to the game.

Players that Succeeded

Marquez Valdes-Scantling (WR)

Oh boy, the rookie receiver had one heck of a game. Five catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. His most impressive play of the game was that one touchdown catch in the back of the end zone from QB Tim Boyle. He was in tight coverage, and despite having issues with dropping passes, he managed to hold on. He wasn’t a bad punt returner either, showcasing his speed while returning them. I used to think the other two rookie receivers outranked him, but I may need to rethink that claim.

Brett Hundley (QB)

Strange to see Hundley on a success list, but he deserves it. He had a way better game then I would’ve thought. His best play was that gorgeous 48 yard pass to Davante Adams near the sideline. Adams also had an impressive showing. Hundley outplayed both DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle on Thursday, and may be the backup quarterback to start the 2018 regular season.

Reggie Gilbert (DE)

While not recording a sack, Gilbert is showing that he deserves to be the third edge rusher on the roster, behind Clay Matthews and Nick Perry. I noticed how much pressure he put on, no matter if it was Marcus Mariota, Blaine Gabbert, or rookie Luke Falk. Gilbert needs to make the roster.

Jake Kumerow (WR)

Not only was he a standout in camp, but also racked up numbers in his first Preseason game. I mean, did you see his 52 yard touchdown from Tim Boyle? It’s an uphill battle to make the roster, but he’s been better than a lot of receivers in camp so far.

Honorable Mentions

Josh Jackson (CB)
Oren Burks (LB)
Tim Boyle (QB)

Players that Struggled

Quinton Rollins (CB, S, KR)

With Rollins’ hope to crack the 53 man roster, this game didn’t help his stock. One of his faults was allowing that 38 yard reception, and blowing his coverage on multiple occasions. Not only that, he botched one kick return and fumbled it backwards, which was thankfully recovered by Green Bay. He better hope he plays better next week.

Byron Bell (O-lineman)

Strange that he started over Jason Spriggs. The risk was not worth it however. He’s the one who let the Titans defensive line put pressure on Brett Hundley and force that interception. Spriggs replaced him in the second half, and he didn’t do so hot either. The Packers could be in trouble with offensive line depth.

J’Mon Moore (WR)

The Packers first wide receiver selection in the draft struggled immensely on Thursday. He dropped plenty of passes, and was the worst of the three rookie receivers against the Titans. His key drop was on a beautiful pass from Tim Boyle. The ball fell off the tip of his hands. Moore needs to improve to be placed higher above his fellow rookies on the roster.

We had the standouts and the strugglers in this game, but Green Bay came away with the win in the end. I would however like to see some players improve next week, against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
