10 Most Historically Inaccurate Movies

Alright, before I put all these movies down, I just want to say that I don't hate any of these movies. I am only putting this out here because I want people to know that these movies are historically incorrect.

The Top Ten
1 Braveheart

First of all, William Wallace was the son of Duke, not a farm boy. Also, he never was called Braveheart. He never wore a kilt or slept with Isabella of France. Bagpipes were never banned, and Wallace's execution was why bloodier.

Ah well, still good movie

No, not a very true representation of Wallace in this, but as you say, it is good entertainment. It is difficult to get many solid facts on Wallace, as both sides in the conflict have scewed what transpired to better represent their take on him. Or better yet, to either glorify, or demonize him.

2 Shakespeare in Love
3 Pocahontas
4 The Last Samurai

You know, I do like this movie, but I never thought of it as anything more than an homage to Samurai culture, and its ultimate demise due to Japanese leaderships (at the time) obsession with Western Culture, or to define it even more distinctly, the ability to wage war effectively against other nations, and to open up trade options with modern arms powerhouses, like the United States. I do think the movie gave a fairly good representation of how some of these things transpired, but I must admit, I've never researched much of it. Part of that is because I would expect to find no reliable historical records from Japanese leadership. Why would they write about a portion of their own society they wished to eliminate? In any case, I should read more on this. In the meantime, I'm gonna watch this again, its pretty good...

5 Gladiator
6 The Sound of Music

Believe it or not, a friend of mine (who is way older than me) met the family, she said the Maria wasn't even that nice!

7 300

The Persians did not wear to have Rhinos or Elephants, and they did not show up in a huge fleet.

Agreed. MANY other inaccuracies here as well. Most of the records available to western historians are of Greek origin, add in the films sensationalized glorification of the 300, and this is the result. That said, it remains a brilliant defensive engagement, that bought time for all of Greece to better prepare for the Persian army. But the Spartans were not alone

8 Pearl Harbor
9 JFK
10 Mulan

Like the Last Samurai, I never knew Milan was supposed to be representative of acrual events. I will look into this, time permitting. I also like this movie. Heck, other than Pearl Harbor, I like all these movies. Great and original list. Keep them coming please.
