She's not well known outside of German speaking countries, but she is huge there so I guess she counts as mainstream. She has a great voice ranging from soft and vulnerable singing to extreme belting. Can be heard best on ballads such as "Living to Love You" and "From Sarah With Love". It makes up for the fact that she hardly writes anything herself, but she is simply that good of a singer.

Austrian singer Conchita Wurst is biologically male... and her voice sounds entirely female, yet she can sound vulnerable as well as belt powerfully. "Rise Like a Phoenix" or "Heroes" show the great voice.
But Tom Neuwirth, the man behind Conchita, plans on retiring his much more famous female stage persona and wants to continue singing as himself. I wonder how that will work. The voice is so feminine it wouldn't fit more "male" songs.
