Top Ten Most Memorable Moments of the 60s

Ahh...the Swinging Sixties... The most talked about decade in history; mainly for music and fashion, but other events happened which will be remembered for an eternity - not ALL good, but definitely unforgettable... If you know of other memorable 60's events you feel should be here, please feel free to add, or vote for an existing item.
The Top Ten
1 Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to land on the moon (1969)

"One small step for man, a giant leap in mankind"
~ Neil Armstrong

The Soviets have Yuri Gagarin as their poster child of communist advancements in space exploration while Armstrong is America's antithesis to that.

A moment we can all believe to be always remembered.

2 Assassination of JFK (1963)

And this is when the years of American optimism of the 50s died with Kennedy dying along with it.

Hard to choose between your top 3. Great list!

3 Martin Luther King Jr. makes his "I Have a Dream" speech (1963)
4 The Beatles records their first single (1962)

Love Me Do.
Yes, I do indeed! What a moment in English history, and eventually the world. That song sparked World Domination. Ok, maybe not quite "World Domination" but it DID have a pretty powerful effect on Planet Earth (musically, at least).

5 First James Bond film, Dr. No, released (1962)
6 The Berlin Wall built (1961)
7 The Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show (1964)

And the USA was never the same again

8 Birth control pill approved (1960)
9 Roger Maris breaks Babe Ruth's long standing HR record, with 61 (1961)
10 Marilyn Monroe dies (1962)
The Contenders
11 Seventeen African nations declare their independence (1960)
12 Tet Offensive (Vietnam War 1968)
13 England wins the World Cup (1966)

Yah...I added this last, on the realisation that it's only a half of England who actually gives a whatever. And whether you agree / disagree, like it or not, it was a very memorable moment of the 60's. Do I care? Well, that depends on how many English football fans are reading this. Umm...yah, I'm pretty proud of them ;).

14 Nelson Mandela sentenced to life in prison (1964)
15 The Civil Rights Act is Passed in the US (1964)
16 Yuri Gagarin Becomes 1st Man in Space (1961)
17 The Social Security Act, creating Medicare and Medicaid, is passed in the US (1965)
18 Prague Spring (1968)

The list is heavily America-oriented, I have to admit but this must be one of the more defining features of the decade. A bunch of reformist in Prague tries to instate democratic reforms under a socialist system but it is met with an invasion by the USSR and Warsaw Pact nations. This event really divided the international socialist left and soured the Soviet image of anti-imperialism.

19 Chaos at the U.S. Democratic National Convention in Chicago (1968)
20 Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. (1968)
21 Assassination of RFK (1968)
22 Woodstock Festival (1969)
23 Sharon Tate murders
24 Anton Lavey Founding the Church of Satan
