Black Sabbath were a Heavy Metal band formed in Birmingham, England in 1968 by guitarist and songwriter Tony Iommi, Singer Ozzy Osbourne, Bassist and Main Lyricist Geezer Butler and Drummer Bill Ward. The band got into mainstream after improving after their debut album got negative feedback. In 1978, ...read more.
Okay, Metallica and Maiden are definitely awesome bands, no doubt about it, BUT let's be honest, Iommi, Geezer, Ozzy, and Ward started it ALL! Iommi/Sabbath took Page/Zeppelin's bluesy, folksy sound to an absolutely whole new level like no one had ever done before. The "Lizard King" Morrison/Doors had some dark and forbidding music and lyrics, but still nothing like Sabbath's Iommi/Butler combination. Song after song, record after record, their first six albums: Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Volume 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Sabotage are just as mind-blowing and soul-numbing as 40 years ago. EVERY metal band lists Sabbath as a major influence, if they don't they are just fooling themselves. Iommi is the undisputed GOD of the standard heavy metal riff and tuned down power chords, even with the loss of the tips of his fingers! Maiden, Metallica, and Priest, all need two guitarists to even come close to what Iommi does all by himself. And, don't even get me ...more
I could prove that Black Sabbath influenced every band on this list. They are a great influence in the world of metal. Avenged Sevenfold is a horrible band and I honestly don't know how they have so many fans. Music these days right! I love Iron Maiden and Judas Priest (some of the best live shows I have seen) but are they really the best? METALLICA SHOULD NOT BE IN THE TOP 5! It can be in the top ten sure but not the top 5 for Christ's sake! Metallica is one of the most overrated bands of all time. I can name a load of bands way better than Metallica. All the wanna be metalheads always stick with Metallica or the people who truly don't know much about the history of metal go with Metallica. If we are talking about Metal, then why isn't Quiet Riot on the list. Quiet Riot I would put below Iron Maiden and Judas Priest but above Metallica. They helped bring metal into the mainstream and the public's eye. WHY DO I NOT SEE VENOM ON HERE! Venom is the pioneer of Black Metal! Hell, they ...more
Black Sabbath, without them half these band out here would not exist. They were the founders of the original "heavy sound", go listen to albums "Black Sabbath", "Masters of Reality, "Paranoid", and "Vol.4" and tell me they don't belong in first place. Black Sabbath basically started that gloomy sound which led to the creation of the metal sounds. They have been proven consistent even to this day with their new album "13". What did Avenged Sevenfold create? From what I heard their new album is basically a rip off of the Black Album by Metallica. Black Sabbath was origin and innovative at a time where there where no other bands like them. They all came from a working class in a working town and it shows the grit in he music. Tony Iommi played with two fingertips being cut off, while Ozzy was beyond scientific marvel on the amount of drugs and alcohol he was on and yet produced some of metals best albums.
This is the band that started all metal; nay, they perfected it and rewarded the world with some of the best music ever. Black Sabbath is awesome. I'm a fourteen-year-old Filipino, and for a young age, I already have a super musical taste with hundreds of complete discographies ranging from 6os bands to 2000s. And I must say, when I hear Black Sabbath's master works, I go headbanging and wondering at the same time, why recent bands with more access to technology couldn't create the same hard-hitting special sound of Sabbath. This mega band and Metallica are the only competitors for the top metal bands. By the way, Vol. 4 is one of the greatest albums ever made, and is perchance the greatest metal album ever. Just listen to "Under The Sun", you'll find the heaviest, doomiest, gravest and most spectacular musical piece. Cheers from great Asia. Even in these remote places, good music comes through.
To "LPFan"-linkin park is one of the worst bands of all time and Van Halen rocks.
Sabbath should be one though no question with maiden at 2. I like Metallica a lot and think they should be in the top 10 at like 7 or 8 but if they hadn't of sold out they wouldn't be voted in the top 10 by the people on this website much less
1. And I hate the fact that people keep voting that crappy Japanese rock band x japan so high. They suck. And nu-metal is the most worthless genre of music nothing good has ever came out of nu-metal. The best band that is considered nu-metal is slipknot and I don't think they should be in the top 30 and I don't consider them nu-metal.
P.S. -Limp Bizkit is and will always be the worst band of all time - Chris-1
This list shows what idiots vote on this website kids that's right kids and x japan fans sabbath is the best! Just listen to paranoid! PLEASE IF YOU HAVE NOT BOUGHT A SABBATH ALBUM BUY ONE RIGHT KNOW OR YOU ARE AN IDIOT PEOPLE OLDER THAN 15 WILL MOCK YOU IF YOU DON'T!
BUY ONE OF THESE ALBUMS!
-Black Sabbath -Paranoid
-Masters Of Reality
-Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
-Heaven And Hell
Buy paranoid first listen to it a few times and if do not like it you are an idiot with strange musical taste! All of the bands that dare to call themselves metal cite sabbath as an influence more than slipknot or metallica will ever get! - crazypeoplearehere
The thing that people overlook about Black Sabbath is that they knew how to *not* play loud. The real genius behind Black Sabbath is that they fully understood the importance of intensity, and loudness. You look at the wave-form of an original CD release of War Pigs for instance (in Audacity perhaps), you can see visually how the band builds up slowly, there is room for the instruments to breathe, and why the second time around (Now in darkness world stops turning), seems more intense, because they held back the first time. It is something that should be taught to every mixer, sound manager, hell, every musician even. Learn from Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath didn't just invent heavy metal, they invented heavy metal *music*. Think about that. - L-1011Widebody
I find it shocking and utterly horrific that Black Sabbath isn't #1 on this list. Are you kidding me?!? NONE of these bands ( with an exception to Maiden) would exist if it wasn't for John Osbourne, William Ward, Terrence Butler and Anthony Iommi. They broke the mold and kicked butt and they deserve the top title for this list. Over thirty years of music is what still inspires young musicians today. No Black Sabbath = No Heavy Metal.
Sabbath deserves to top this list with Judas Priest a close second. Sabbath's first album was something different...it scared the s*** out of people when it was released. The lyrical content and sound of Sabbath got to the point where they were accused of being satanists. The people that feel that stuff like A7X and Slipknot are the best really need to go listen to Sabbath's stuff through "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" - ybothermatt
This is definitely one of the hardest choices ever this chart is wrong I mean totally wrong! People are voting according to preferences not if they have really good originality. What I mean is for ex. Black Sabbath isn't my favorite band, by far! Iced Earth is, but I recognize that the Sabbath were the fathers of nowadays's Heavy Metal and most of metal's riffs have (even if just a little) hint of Black Sabbath's riffs. Not to mention their music is already awesome by it's own...
without Black sabbath Heavy metal wouldn't Exit, I believe people haven't heard it and so they vote for other bands, the order should be
1. Black Sabbath
2. Judas Priest
4. Guns N' Roses
5. Iron Maiden
6. Ozzy Osbourne
7. Led Zeppelin
9. Deep Purple
This order is for heavy Metal, not hard Rock
Black Sabbath is the original heavy metal band. With classic albums such as Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy (I'm cheating with that one, but Technical Ecstasy isn't nearly as bad as everyone says. In fact, I think it's just as good as Sabotage), Heaven and Hell, & Mob Rules, I think it's safe to say that Black Sabbath are the ultimate heavy metal band.
BLACK SABBATH ROCK! Me and my brother are always having an argument: who is better Black Sabbath or KoRn? He knows it's Black Sabbath but insits on continuing the arguement. My favorite 5 songs (in no particular order): paranoid, iron man, the wizard, fairies wear boots & neon knights. Altho they've been thru so many line ups, they still r 1 of the best metal bands.
They also r 1 of the creators of metal so half of the bands in list wouldn't have been in this list if they weren't around!
Black Sabbath was not only the first metal band I've listened to, they are by far the best. Deeper vocals, kick ass guitar riffs that still blow me away, and have been more consistent than any of these other bands. I think there only upset for me was "Forbidden" but I thought the rest was awesome.
These guys are the creators of Heavy Metal, so how in gods name are they not at the very least number 2? I would've given them rank 1 but Metallica truly is amazing, so I can't complain. On the other hand, how is this under Avenged Sevenfold? Seriously? It's like if people don't know how to appreciate good music anymore :(
God of metal is not best? I can't belive that black sabbath the creators of metal is not best.can you? People that voted to another bands don't know anything a bout metal.if we didn't have black sabbath we didn't have metal know.do you know anything about metal? I don't think so
Don't forget that Sabbath also had Ronnie James Dio for a while. In my opinion, the greatest medal singer ever. Sabbath maiden Metallica. I listen all 3 all almost every day. Death medal is another category all together. Slipknot are hacks. Went to their concert, gwar much better for theater rock.
Sabbath is the beginning and the end of metal! If it weren't for them every other metal band of the last thirty years would have been relocated to being a second rate to some other genre of music. Imagine the last thirty years of nothing but easy listening singles.
How could possibly Avenged Sevenfold (with a studio cheating guitarist be higher than Black Sabbath)? The band who INVENTED metal. Without Black Sabbath THERE WOULD be NO METAL. No Metallica, No Iron Maiden, No Avenged Sevenfold, No Megadeth.. Basically nothing!
The notion that Black Sabbath created metal is false. It was The Scorpions that first created metal. Also, the notion that Metallica wouldn't be here without either is false, too. Evolution can occur in a variety of ways, and their biggest influence was Budgie, Diamond Head and Danzig.
The entire reason metal became genre, without them none of the bands on here would have the inspiration to start their music, they aren't my favourite on the list but they are the best and deserve the credit for creating such a diverse and aggressive genre.
THESE WERE THE INVENTORS OF METAL PERIOD. How can they not be number one? There guitarist lost the tips of his fingers, but is still one of the greats, this was Ozzy Osbourne in his prime, there albums war pigs, bloody sabbath, their debut album... Seriously
Watch their "live in Paris 1970" video. They invented, no, CREATED every aspect of metal and had the guts to play their music in a culture all about hippies. They are the undisputed metal gods. I love almost every band in this list, but this is just no contest.
X japan? judas priest? are you kidding me?
only retards would vote for them
black sabbath invented metal and without black sabbath any of these bands would have made it.
why is the world filled with retards?
im sick of you
by the way:
XJAPAN SUCKS - metfan001
I don't disagree with the top 6 (Metallica, Maiden, Sabbath, Megadeth, Priest, Pantera) but Black Sabbath should be at the very top. Call them the Grandfathers of the genre. None of the others would exist without the influence of Ozzy, Iommi, Geezer and Ward. Long Live Metal!
