61 HammerFall HammerFall HammerFall is a Swedish heavy metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was formed in 1993 by ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak.

They are great! These folks should be in the top ten! I know they are Swedish but they rock, if you don't agree you have never heard them.

The best heavy metal band!

This list will be standing before everyone who has contributed to it have long passed away. It's a novel, not a list.

Hammerfall copied off of Iron Maiden and helloween, and I fall asleep listening Hammerfall.

62 Mastodon Mastodon Mastodon is an American heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in early 2000 and composed of bassist Troy Sanders, guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor.

There's no comparing mastodon to anyone on this list they are in a league of their own. I would have expected them to be much higher on the list. They are constantly evolving.

Does somebody want to tell me why Mastodon is bellow AC/DC, Evanescence, Led Zeppelin, and Three Days Grace, bands that AREN'T EVEN METAL! Mastodon revolutionizes the genre, instead of catering to an oblivious public. I'm looking at you Avenged Sevenfold.

One of the best metal bands to play! Ever! No other sound can compare to their own. They changed the world of music to me. Songs like crack the Skye, the last baron, and oblivion have gave me a new outlook on progressive metal, and music in itself. Please give them a listen because they deserve a little respect for the music they create and for their technical mastery!

Ahah! You can notice the quality, viability and truthfulness of this site when bands like Soundgarden are in front of Mastodon! I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Soundgarden. The problem is that Soundgarden is a grunge band, whereas Mastodon is a REAL metal band. Besides that, there are still a lot of pseudo-metal bands that target a specific audience that end up in higher places in the rank. Most of the bands hold on to a certain sound and don't change nor evolve it. All in all, I think that Mastodon (and other bands that aren't so roughly placed) deserve more recognition in this page.
I don't think that anybody will read this, but if you do, listen trully to this bands and the bands that are higher in the rank and hopefully it will open your eyes to what metal really is.

63 Nine Inch Nails Nine Inch Nails Nine Inch Nails is an American industrial rock/metal band and, founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ok, I'm only 14, but I love nin. I've been to one of their concerts before and they sound pretty good live considering how produced their music is. I can't believe they aren't higher on the list. They outrank those screamo bands by far.

Like Ministry, Skinny Puppy - and even Fear Factory - NIN combined brutal metal riffs with their Industrial style, so they rightly belong here.

How I'd love to be 14 and discover 'The Fragile' for the first-time. I'm still not sick of that epic industrial masterpiece.

Not metal. - wrests

64 Children Of Bodom Children Of Bodom Children Of Bodom is a melodic death metal band from Espoo, Finland. Formed in 1993, the group currently consists of Alexi Laiho, Janne Wirman, Henkka Seppälä, Jaska Raatikainen and Daniel Freyberg.

I think COB is the best of all ever. And Alexi (The Wildchild ) is guitar guru, I just can't but help listening to them even I can't think of heavy metal without cob... Love you!

Why 18th? Is this some kind of joke! Children of bodom don't deserve to be in the top 20, they deserve to be in the top 3! People should consider looking at the advantage that this band has. They melodic, fast and skilled! Alexi and Roope have absolute technique and speed. Watch the bodom beach terrot solo lesson and see how talented Alexi is. COB IS AWESOME AND THEY SHOULD KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! NOT MY FUNERAL IS ALSO A GOOD SONG TO PICK UP CONSIDERATION

My personal Favorite band of all time I Loved all their albums.
Their new album is okay, its meh it has some cool solos and guitar playing.

Bloodrunk was awesome though, I don't know why fans complain about it.
I've loved bodom since Something wild and They really progressed their style A lot into a great band.

There is a reason The ESP guitar website puts Alexi Laiho's Name above george lynch, Jeff Hannamen ( slayer), Gus G ( ozzy), Stephen Carpender ( deftones), Mycheal paget ( bullet), Will Adler ( lamb of god), Ron Wood ( rolling stones), Max Cavaleria ( Soul fly, Sepultara)

They just are

65 Cattle Decapitation Cattle Decapitation Cattle Decapitation is an American Deathgrind band from San Diego, California formed in 1996. Cattle Decapitation's songs protest the mistreatment and consumption of animals, the abuse of the environment and touch subjects such as misanthropy and genocide of the human race. Much of their music is based more.

A unique style has been crafted by them in the last few years, and it's putridly, violently beautiful. They are amazing.

Metallica is Nursery Rhymes compared to these guys

It's a shame to see this band so low on the list. - Azerix

Should be #1

66 Sabaton Sabaton Sabaton is a power metal band from Falun, Sweden formed in 1999. The band's main lyrical themes are based on war and historical battles.

Many metal bands are good, but Sabaton is great because they teach you history. Most of their songs are about the history from 15 century to nowadays. Also they play well, it's another reason to choose this band.

They are way too low there. Sabaton MUST be on the, at least, top 25. They are one of the better known ones, and 40:1 is great. I'm actually Polish.

Seen them live 3 times at Sabaton Open Air and they're hilarious and great at catching the audience and that they sing about actual battles and people make me get goosebumps.

I don't have to study history too much, I can listen to Sabaton. Also they have lot of powerful songs...

67 Shinedown Shinedown Shinedown is an American hard rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 2001 and founded by members Brent Smith, Brad Stewart, Jasin Todd, and Barry Kerch.

I seen some things man I've seen some stuff I wouldn't recommend it. Shinedown helped me through it, I seen haleys comet and she gave me a second chance

Honestly one of the best bands out there even today, considering they have been making amazing music for over a decade! Love em to death and even after! 3

More rock than metal but some of the best metal songs deserve top five

I vote for Shinedown for 2 reasons :
1. They're my most favourite band
2. Let you know they're NOT metal
That's it.

68 White Zombie White Zombie White Zombie was an American heavy metal band that formed in 1985. Based in New York City, White Zombie was originally a noise rock band, and was known for its later heavy metal-oriented sound.

If there were more records, he would definitely be higher on my list. Saw a few youtube videos, and they were pretty atrocious live, but the records are awesome!

Love rob zombie in his work. They should be in the 60s-70s not 160!

69 The Acacia Strain

Highly underrated simply due to be pigeon holed into the hardcore genre. Heavy, destructive music.

The baddest band ever. Pure brutal sound!

70 Gojira Gojira Gojira is a progressive metal band from Bayonne, France. The band was known as Godzilla until 2001. Gojira is composed of Joe Duplantier on vocals and rhythm guitar, his brother Mario Duplantier on drums, Christian Andreu on lead guitar, and Jean-Michel Labadie on bass.

Simply put, Gojira is one of the best metal bands in the past decade- Between their strong lyrics, powerful guitar playing, and one of the best drummers hands down, they are a powerhouse that deserves a spot in the top ten. For God's sake, these guys made me regain some respect for France! (their home country)

I'd say at least half of the bands on this list aren't even metal, or are casually heavy at best. Gojira makes Bullet for my Valentine look like Hawthorne Heights.

Guys, seriously? Haven't you heard of the name? Gojira should at least be in the top 20. Give a listen to them and you'll be tripping balls. They're easily one of the heaviest and consistent bands here.

Actually, seeing Bullet for my Valentine higher on the list than Gojira makes me sad. Smart lyrics, heavy yet somewhat catchy riffs and insane drumming, this band has it all.

71 Mudvayne Mudvayne Mudvayne was an American heavy metal band from Peoria, Illinois formed in 1996. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, they are known for their sonic experimentation, innovative album art, face and body paint, masks and uniforms.

Chad Gray is a beast, no way around it he is a better vocalist than most of the singers in these bands are. Honestly it's because the bands being "Nu Metal" that Mudvayne and Korn are so low. Even though they are more alternative metal than nu metal. Back to Mudvayne, look at some of their older stuff Dig, The End of All Things to Come, World So Cold, Happy, Determined, Just.. Anything off their first 3 albums is great. I don't know about their new stuff I haven't heard any yet. As for their hiatus, Chad is now doing albums with Vinny Paul in the band Hellyeah so give them a try too, they're pretty good.

This is some bull Mudvayne defined heaviness in vocals and guitar especially Chad greys awesome vocals he can go from singing softly to all out screaming and growling in 5.4 seconds, people mudvayne was the beginning of heavy vocals, vote higher people and all their albums are great I've listened to all of them and haven't found a single track that sounded like complete! Mudvayne deserves top 20 at least, mudvayne is right up there with Korn and mushroomhead, if you really value today's modern metal you would vote for mudvayne.

Should be at number 1. Chad gray has best voice among these band. This band have created some epic song does not deserve rank 54.

This band should be in the top tens

72 Sonata Arctica Sonata Arctica Sonata Arctica is a Finnish power metal band from the town of Kemi, Finland. Created as a hard rock band named Tricky Beans, they later changed to Tricky Means and finally to Sonata Arctica, when they shifted to power metal.

One of THE BEST bands I've ever heard, n fact my favourite band of all time. I really don't understand how SA can be so far down on this list, they deserve to be number 1! I know power metal is not a well-known genre but when you look deeper than Metallica or Slipknot, you can find gems like this band, it's a shame they are so underrated... I discovered them at a time in my life when I was depressed as well and never had I known that a band like this could change my life, and even the songs are very relatable to me. The lyrics are like poetry to me, and every track is beautifully composed, both lyrically and melodically. The keyboards and guitars are extremely talented and Tony Kakko's vocals are sublime - Tony has an amazing voice! Sure, they have evolved their power metal style to a more progressive genre, but that is not necessarily a bad thing, as I feel their newer albums have a lot more meaning, and connection to the listener and are a lot more complex, however I still can never ...more

Sonata Arctica have had a popularity fall with their newest albums, The style is more mainstream and love related from before when there was more anger and moral choices. They still holds one of the two best albums ever made in the "power metal" genre. Winterheart's Guild and Reckoning Night. With their stunning preformance with "The Cage". Great band, but I understand the low rating, since power metal is not really a popular genre.

If you're unfamiliar, listen to White Pearl, Black Oceans. One of the greatest songs I've heard

73 Agalloch Agalloch

Positively surprised to find them on this list, considering they aren't that popular outside of the underground black metal scene. This band has produced some of the most beautifully haunting and atmospheric albums I've ever heard. They're beyond great and deserve way more recognition.

In fact their sounds are the best folk metal I heard till now.

74 Burzum Burzum Burzum is an influential black metal solo project of Norwegian musician and writer Varg Vikernes. Burzum came to prominence at the beginning of the Norwegian Black Metal scene in the early 1990s. Vikernes was imprisoned for 21 years for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous, and charges of church more. has new meaning...

This guy is amazing, sure, he killed a man and burnt a few churches, but it adds to the black metal euphoria-thing.

Classic. And you know it

Ps if you're reading this you must be seriously bored. Get off the internet for a while, engage in a hobby

76 Mayhem Mayhem Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo, regarded as one of the pioneers of the Norwegian black metal scene.

Metal was supposed to be hard, all these bands are so soft. Mayhem is one of the only real metal bands on this list. Honestly all the other bands talk, but mayhem did, and still does. Real metal is mayhem.

I miss dead. I guess he would have wanted to go out that way though. One of my most favorite bands of all time.

I'd comment on this, but I like my life, my head attached to my shoulders, and my place of residence too much.

The most satanic band ever xDDD - Disturbedpotato

78 Rise Against Rise Against Rise Against is an American hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1999. The band's current line-up comprises vocalist/rhythm guitarist Tim McIlrath, lead guitarist Zach Blair, bassist Joe Principe and drummer Brandon Barnes. They are known for popularizing punk.

Rise against is not a metal band, they're a punk band pure and simple, and a very good one at that.

Did they - or any other Punk band for that matter - have an impact on metal? If so, they're rightly here. If not, fair enough. I often look at Dead Kennedys track Drug Me and In God We Trust ep as influential for its hardcore aggression, and I know Sepultura cover them. Ponderous.

Guys, how could this band is not in the list! This band has all the power, riffs, vocals and lyrics. This is the best band and it is modern band. We should give them a credit for what they deserve.

Not metal. anyway I don't like their heavy songs. rather I prefer their soft songs more. - zxm

79 Kreator Kreator Kreator is a German thrash metal band from Essen. Their style of music is similar to that of their compatriots Destruction, Sodom and Tankard; along with those three bands, Kreator has been referred to as one of the "big four" of Teutonic thrash metal, and they are often credited with helping pioneer more.

Why am I seeing this below crappy bands like underoath and Bullet For My Valentine? Kreator practically pioneered death metal with pleasure to kill and endless pain, why don't they get any credit?

Lol! This band is like Metallica but good? Comedy gold. I love Kreator, but they were just a twinkle in Metallica's eye when the gods gave birth to Kreator.

Yes! They are too low on the list, and I can't put my finger on why. I guess the 80's was such a prolific time for thrash that they just got thrown in the laundry basket, along with Sodom, Destruction, Vendetta, Deathrow - you name it. Still, to this day, killing it both on album and live.

Kreator is at 104? What a joke this list is. I think this list was made by casual metal fans - Sabbath

80 Behemoth Behemoth Behemoth is a Polish blackened death metal band from Gdańsk, formed in 1991. They are considered to have played an important role in establishing the Polish extreme metal underground.

Metallica are not a trend, not in the slightest. They are the greatest trendsetters in metal history. People love them for what they did do, not what they didn't. Progressive Tech Thrash is not radio-friendly.

If this list was actually a top ten list, this band would be there, the only reason Metallica is popular is the same reason that Justin Bieber is popular, it's a trend...

Favorite blackened death metal band. Nergal is definitely a virtuoso

Hell yeah
