Slayer is an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California, formed in 1981 by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King. They rose to fame with their 1986 album Reign in Blood, and is credited as one of the big four of thrash metal bands, the others being Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. more.

Slayer at 16? Whos x Japan? Slayer is the best metal band ever.. Metallica, Black Sabbath, judas priest, iron maiden, megadeth, cradle of filth, cob, log all come after Slayer

Tough choice, lot of great bands that can realistically be considered the greatest. I went with Slayer because I think they define what metal is more than any other band. Sabbath and Priest were pioneers, but still sounded very rock to me with a touch of metal. Maiden is huge and 100% metal, but I prefer something a bit heavier. Metallica is the king, biggest metal band ever, but they had a few albums that veered away from true metal and were a bit rockish in the 90's. They did return with authentic thrash though in their last album, Death Magnetic. Slayer, on the other hand, has never veered. They've stayed true to who they are, even if that meant selling far fewer albums than say Metallica. Slayer is thrash at it's finest and always heavy. Their new album, due out 9-11-15, sounds great so far. Repentless single is classic Slayer. Reign in bloodis possibly the greatest thrash album ever. Slayer has been around for over 30 years and still as great as ever. And just take one look at ...more

OK you know heres the deal. I voted for slayer but its hard to give number 1 / 2 / 3 spots when it comes to Iron Maiden, Megadeth, etc... All are Superb and very different as far as sound and musical style go. Metallica should no longer even be on this list. They are a bunch of sell out d-bags. If they stuck to the days of ride the lightning (AWESOME) and even Master of Puppets, well, you know. The fact Judas and Sabbath are here show people are thinking of roots but WHERE THE HELL IS EXODUS! If you haven't been following and you like these bands, give them a shot! Start with tempo of the damned. Blows Sevenfold out of the arena, period!

Disturbed & Avenged Sevenfold ahead of Slayer? Hahaha, oh man there is something VERY wrong here... SLAYER are pioneers of this genre, and are still as good as the day they first appeared. They are still the yardstick by which almost all others are compared to. One of the most distinctive and influential metal bands ever!... And where is SEPULTURA? Not even mentioned in the top 100... What about VENOM, without whom we would possibly not even have had Metallica, Slayer or Megadeth?!

There was always a mutual respect between Slayer and Metallica, and despite Metallica taking the piss out of Slayer's Satanism, and Slayer taking the piss out of Metallica's progressive take on thrash, they both admired each other. History shall show in 200-years time that Metallica were the greatest thrash band on in history and Slayer as the 2nd best band in thrash history. Long live the memory of Jeff Hanneman, and inevitably, long live the 2 giants of thrash.

Slayer has an energy that can't be replicated by so called "death" metal bands produce nothing but double bass and cookie monster vocals. They have brutal speed and talent on all instruments with great riffs and grooves. Bruce (Maiden) has great vocals, but when I need to hear intensity, nothing scratches that itch like Halford (Priest) or better yet Araya (Slayer).

Pantera is the only post 80s originating band that might belong here. Avenge Sevenfold, System of a Down, Slipknot laugh out loud, seriously? Many newbs voting here.

Sorry, Slayer fanboys. Metallica were there before you. I am a huge fan of Slayer's first 5 - atmospheric and diverse as hell - but Metallica define what thrash is and isn't, not Slayer. Yes, they have they're style, and they are without question in the top 4 thrash bands on the planet, and span generations like Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth, but as great as their first 5 are, they're not as great as Metallica's first 5. It's hard to admit when you love a band that they're not on equal footing with the master, but unfortunately for Slayer fans, history has spoken.

The people who don't like SLAYER have never listened to SLAYER! This is a fact! Seriously who the hell is Avenged Sevenfold why are they in the top 10 of every list! People have you ever heard of a song named Angel of Death, if not then you should just listen to some pop anyways.

Heh! Avenged Sevenfold is above of slayer! Are you kidding me guys?!

You can't never find one band better them and if you wanna compare to other bands as individual in technique and composing it's your time wasting because nobody can't reach to their class in thrash metal! Who can be Araya, lombardo or king?!?!?!

What you think in this rank! Who is better than them here? Avenged Sevenfold or disturbed? Or other kidddz here?!?!?!?

You disappoint me by your votes! BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT REAL METAL HEADS!

Slayer symbolizes the heavier side to the thrash metal world. They never went back on their extreme extent. Anything other than the top 5 is unrealistic for the amount of damage this band has done for their first 5 albums (personally I love all their work but their first 5 is what gave them their infamous title). They have the most loyal fan base and their sound is beyond timeless. Hell, I bet Satan checks under his bed for Hanneman every now and then (rip). Also, happy 30th anniversary to reign in blood l.

How is Avenged Sevenfold above SLAYER?!? Slayer should be up with megadeth, iron maiden, and Black Sabbath! They helped start thrash metal and had a huge influence on extreme metal. Classics like angel of death and hell awaits put them head and shoulders above competitors, and they never released a bad album or sold out (Metallica)

Somebody! Please Slay this list's voters. It's pathetic how Metallica is number 1 when their music is all trash and bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Slayer who have much more refined and quality songs/bands come after it. Slayer are the real gods of thrash, listen to their music and you'll see..

X-Japan, come on. Slayer is the heaviest heavy metal band of all time. They can go from slow pace, to extremely fast riffs, and break down with some evil melodic clean guitar notes. They should be at least #4, replacing Avenged Seven fold.

The most powerful and evil metal band ever to be spawned from the depths of hell itself. The most raw and most brutal metal ever conceived came from these gods of thrash. Avenged Sevenfold shouldn't even be allowed in the presence of Slayer, the true greatest band of any genre.

We thrash fans see behind your satanic facade Slayer. You are anti-establishment personified, have wrote brutal thrash albums your whole career (some better than others, if I may say), and deserve to be in 2nd place for all eternity, being prodded by a pitch forked horned freak.

A7x? Are they even metal? More like a boy band if you ask me. Slayer is way too low. They are the only band that still puts out decent albums also, although the tone is different they're still true to thrash metal unlike Metallica. RIP JEFF!

This is outrageous! How can Slayer be No. 12 and why is it under that lousy lame band (which is not even a metal band) X Japan? Slayer is way heavier than X Japan. Plus, Slayer has way more fans and money than X Japan. Slayer has even played in the 'The Big Four Concert'! - TheTopinator

#1 Maiden #2 Megadeth #3 Slayer - speed brutality aggressive metal played at blistering speed by talented musicians with one of the greatest screams in Metal Tom Araya is the man and Slayer destroys those posers Avenged Sevenfold

Slayer's first 5 albums are amongst the best thrash albums in history, and the reason behind it is because they were diverse and progressive. But I think it's fair to say they became too one-dimensional after that. But, hey. So did everyone else.

Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and Metallica are the fore-founders of Thrash Metal and ruled in 20th century Metal culture. Slayer, you guys just rock, your songs are pure awesomeness! I cried when Jeff died. I cried every time I miss your live. Dead Skin Mask, Angel of death, Raining Blood and Season of the Abyss are the best, Must listen for all metal bands. Slayer for life! Love you, Guys (no hom0).

Slayer's first 5 are second only to Metallica so far as reputation, and progressive thrash goes. They had a bit of Judas Priest (image-wise) on Show No Mercy, but after that they went on a tear very few bands can match and belong in 2nd-place.

Most of the "Metal Bands" got their ideas from Slayer, who got their ideas from Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, etc. All these bands just took what they heard and made their own thing, faster, harder, more intense. Slayer, best ever in the genre!

Great, that's all we need is people who don't know real metal just ruining it for everybody. Metallica is number 2 compared to slayer. It's annoying when slipknot is above them, they aren't even metal. Neither is Judas Priest.

Slayer is better than any other band... They are the gods of thrash, Metallica almost abandoned playing thrash after 95 and yet they are counted as one of big four of thrash... I mean this is ridicules... Don't know why they are at 1st place

Don't you guys miss early Slayer? Am I alone in thinking they've become so repetitious and one-dimensional that Hell Awaits, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss sound like Dream Theater so far as musicianship goes?
