Best Metal Cover Songs

The best classic heavy/thrash metal songs covered by modern metal bands.

The Top Ten Best Metal Cover Songs

1 Painkiller - Death

Not all that modern, but that doesn't make it any less awesome! Chuck's voice sounds mind-blowing. The highs are much very close to if not better than Rob Halford. No disrespect to the Metal God, but the Father of Death Metal really nailed this song - MetalFoREVer1228

Even nails on a chalkboard is better than the Holy Diver cover really.

Better then the Killswitch engage cover of Holy Diver

I like Death but this cover is trash!

2 Holy Diver - Killswitch Engage

This is the best metal cover ever! A must listen if you haven't heard it yet!

Sorry but this is one of the worst covers EVER. Starts off OK, then the crappy chug-chug guitars come in... and then the screams... and before you know it its single-handedly destroyed everything that made the original great. Absolutely abysmal. These crap talentless metalcore bands should never cover anything because they ruin everything they come 10 feet near.

I do think Killswitch Engage did well honoring Ronnie James Dio with this cover, but I think the original blows the cover away. I have the original and cover on my workout playlist because I think they’re both pretty vintage. Whether you like the original or the cover better, we can all agree that this song is badass! 🤘🏻

3 Master of Puppets - Trivium

4 Am I Evil? - Metallica

Because it's metallica

5 Dream On - Ronnie James Dio & Yngwie Malmsteen

Could be better but I'm still amazed

6 Circle of the Tyrants - Opeth
7 Aces High - Children of Bodom
8 Angel of Death - Carnifex

Awesome cover Carnifex is definitely the best Deathcore band - christangrant

9 Hallowed Be Thy Name - Machine Head

I honestly think this version destroys the Cradle of Filth one. I feel that CoF gave this song too much unnecessary aggression.

Agreed, I'd go with Machine Head and not with Cradle of Filth, too, because growls are done tastefully here by R. Flynn (not overdone). - Metal_Treasure

WAY better than Crap of Filth's cover - christangrant

10 Raining Blood - Vader

I am not afraid to admit I like the cover more than the original :P.

To be fair, a song like "Raining Blood" fits to be covered in a Death Metal version. Its lyrics, theme and tone relates and the song itself is a pivotal piece for Extreme Metal. I'd say Vader did them justice. - CrimsonShark

The Contenders

11 No Quarter - Tool

No contest here, gentlemen.

12 Would? - Opeth
13 Walk - Avenged Sevenfold

Lame Pantera cover, Go listen to the cover of Strength Beyond Strength by Sylosis much better cover - christangrant

Matt's voice fits this song perfectly

14 Stone Cold Crazy - Metallica
15 Flash of the Blade - Avenged Sevenfold

This cover sucks - christangrant

16 Electric Eye - As I Lay Dying
17 Beyond the Realms of Death - Blind Guardian

Again, I love this band but this cover was terrible. Hansi’s voice just doesn’t fit the song at all.

Basically this song is not for Hansi’s voice (baritone) … but he nailed it!
This song is very difficult and emotional, and Hansi gave it the necessary intensity. He didn't try to imitate Halford - he played on his own strengths: harsher and more dramatic voice, noticeable on the chorus. I’m also pretty happy with the solos, drums and bass.

As a Judas Priest fan I really appreciate great covers like this one because there are not more than 5 Judas Priest covers of this quality. In terms of vocals, the most difficult covers (I’m aware of) are this one and Painkiller - nailed by Death. - Metal_Treasure

18 Don't Talk to Strangers - Blind Guardian

Hansi sounds just like Dio! Dio would be proud. - Metal_Treasure

19 War Pigs - Faith No More
20 Symphony of Destruction - Paul Di'ano & Jeriko

Paul Di'Anno was made for this song. Awesome Megadeth cover. - Metal_Treasure

21 Whip It - Love and Death
22 Whiskey in the Jar - Metallica

Are you kidding me!? 27! This has to be one of the most iconic metal cover songs ever. - SionicRelations

23 Rumor Has It - Mushroomhead
24 Creeping Death - Bullet for My Valentine
25 Silent Scream - Children of Bodom
26 Angel of Death - Monstrosity
27 Rainbow in the Dark - Corey Taylor
28 Crazy Train - Bullet for My Valentine

They are metal, metalcore, a subgenre of extreme metal. - RustyNail

Bullet for my Valentine? Metal? HAHAAHA that's the funniest thing I've read all day.

29 Another Brick in the Wall - Korn
30 Paranoid - Megadeth

Dave's voice actually suits this song really well. Great cover of a great song. - truckturner

31 Perfect Strangers - JØRN Lande

A top 10 cover. - Metal_Treasure

32 Doctor Doctor - Iron Maiden
33 Land of Confusion - Disturbed

Really awesome and great cover song. Check it out if you haven't.

34 Sign of the Cross - Blaze Bayley
35 Twilight of the Thunder God - Sabaton

I'm surprised this sin't on the list. I've just found this recently and I jam onto it because its pretty kickass ;).

I also like Sabaton's take on this, considering the band's lyrical themes they tend to cover. That's a similarity between Sabaton and Amon Amarth, much of their lyrics are normally wars and battles. Both have an "Epic" feel, except Sabaton is more energetic and the original by Amon Amarth is more primal, akin to a Viking's battle instinct

Overall, great cover :). - CrimsonShark

36 Disposable Heroes - Chimaira
37 Planet Caravan - Pantera
38 Flight of Icarus - Tim "Ripper" Owens
39 Valhalla - Heaven Shall Burn

Death metal cover of Blind Guardian with additional vocals by Hansi Kursch. - Metal_Treasure

40 Battery - Machine Head
41 Domination - Bullet for My Valentine
42 Black Metal - Vader
43 Freezing Moon - Behemoth
44 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Anthrax
45 Angel of Death - Gamma Ray

Awesome Thin Lizzy cover. - Metal_Treasure

46 Soldier of Fortune - Opeth
47 Breaking the Law - Motörhead
48 In a Gadda Da Vida - Blind Guardian

A really "metalized" version of this classic. Good job! - Metal_Treasure

49 Futureal - Blaze Bayley
50 Paranoid - Avenged Sevenfold
