In Defense Of Marinette Dupain ChengTwilightKitsune MIRACULOUS
SIMPLY THE BEST
UP TO THE TEST - WHEN THINGS GO WRO-ONG!
MIRACULOUS, THE LUCKIEST
THE POWER OF LOVE ALWAYS SO STRO-ONG!
Hello lads and ladettes. It’s another Miraculous post, my first being about Sabrina Reincomprix.
Now, Season 2 has been released, and we’ve seen some pretty awesome things. We’ve found out Hawk Moth’s secret identity is Gabriel (wait, that was supposed to be a plot twist?). We’ve found out he targets Marinette’s class because he knows Chloe’s bitchy attitude is bound to set someone off. We’ve seen akuma miss their target and go for someone else. We’ve seen Robostus take over Hawk Moth’s lair. We’ve seen two people akumatized by holding the same object, and we’ve finally got to see Alya as a superhero! Glaciator gave us a nice MariChat scene, and Kagami and Luka have been introduced in the show. Boy, this show sure is getting better.
Season 2 is halfway complete (I checked and the last released episode was Captain Hardrock).
Anyway, some fans say there is one flaw in the show that holds it back, despite all its awesomeness. That flaw is none other than…. Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
Yeah. People are heaping blame on the show’s own protagonist for ruining the quality of the show.
Allow me to elaborate –
We’ve seen a lot of positive aspects of Mari as well. She is always cheerful and friendly and does nice things for people. She encouraged Ivan to go after Mylene, let Adrien think his dad gave him her scarf so he could feel good, let Nino and Alya hook up, saved Master Fu from his death and she’s done many other kind, selfless acts for people throughout the show. As Nathanael puts it in Evillustrator, ‘you’re beautiful. And kind, Marinette’.
But so far, I’ve seen Marinette get a lot of hate for a lot of reasons. Some say she’s irresponsible and abuses her powers. Some say she is selfish, like her actions in ‘Gamer’. Some say she is a stalker and doesn’t deserve Adrien.
There are many other reasons, and today I am going to deconstruct them all in this post.
So, let’s begin.
#1 – Babysitting Manon
As we all know, Manon Chamack is the daughter of Nadja Chamack, one of Marinette’s mom’s friends. Marinette is forced to babysit Manon while Nadia works as a news reporter.
There are several episodes where Marinette abandons her duty of babysitting and leaves it to Alya, her best friend. This is where the Mari hate begins.
A fan said, ‘[She is bad because she does stuff like]never letting Manon win when they play, especially when she doesn't ever let her play as Ladybug, or also overriding her mom's authority by saying Manon can have a doll even thought her mom said no, then getting her into trouble for it, or when she let Alya babysitt her so she could go with Adrien, which even if she is your best friend, is a better babysitter than her and she knows she can trust her, she is not her babysitter. If a babysitter would let your kid with another girl alone so she can chase a boy, would you hire her again? Even if Alya insisted, I still don't agree with that line of thought.’
Okay, I admit you have legitimate concerns here. But let’s look at the bigger picture here.
First ‘she never lets Manon win when they play, especially when she doesn't ever let her play as Ladybug’.
About Manon never winning. It’s just a game. It’s not meant to be taken seriously. I don’t see the big deal about that honestly, and they can always play another game instead where Manon can win.
And second, never letting her play as Ladybug. There’s actually a good reason for that.
For a long time, Mari’s been battling Hawk Moth. Mari knows that Hawk Moth can turn any non-sentient object as a means for harm. We’ve seen use turn drawings, wifi, hats, and a whole lot of seemingly mundane objects into weapons. Mari also knows akumas can brainwash others, as demonstrated by Chat Noir. So maybe Mari thought, ‘Well crap, I better not give this LB doll to Manon or who knows, HM could turn her into an akuma and blablabla’. And keep in mind, Manon is just a kid, and it is very easy for kids to feel negative emotions. Even if Marinette had given her the doll, there could have been another way for Manon to feel negative. So Marinette was actually SAVING THE ENTIRE WORLD by not giving Manon that doll.
‘or when she let Alya babysitt her so she could go with Adrien, which even if she is your best friend, is a better babysitter than her and she knows she can trust her, she is not her babysitter. If a babysitter would let your kid with another girl alone so she can chase a boy, would you hire her again? Even if Alya insisted, I still don't agree with that line of thought’
Again, you are missing the big picture. Let’s look at all the times Mari’s abandoned Manon to Alya.
‘Stormy Weather’ – She had no idea how to handle a scrawny child wrecking the place. So yeah, she needed Alya’s help. I agree with you that she shouldn’t have gone to Adrien’s photo shoot. But when Stormy Weather started wreking havoc, she had no choice but to let Manon and Alya stay together. I mean, what’s more important, SAVING THE WORLD or babysitting a brat who’s whinier than Caillou? And yes, Alya is not her babysitter, but Marinette had no choice. And she did not abandon her so she could ‘chase a boy’, it was because a wild akuma was loose killing everyone.
‘Prime Queen’ – Mari had to go as Ladybug because it was necessary for Nadja’s job. If she had stayed Nadja would have been fired. Again, she had no choice in the matter. It’s not like she treats Alya as a mook who can easily fill in for her when she bunks off. She does her best to take care of Manon, and only calls Alya in times of emergencies.
And I’m going to have to put some blame on Nadja herself too. Yeah, I know she has a job and all but she should really stop acting like she is entitled to Marinette as a babysitter. Again, I know she has a job and all, but still. She needs to realize Marinette isn’t just some extra hands to help her, she’s a 15 year old who has her own life and other things. Marinette can’t be around all the time. Sometimes I wonder if she’s even a responsible parent at all, and should legally be allowed to have custody of Manon.
#2 – Stealing Max’s spot in the tournament
The same fan said ‘ Remember when she stole Max's spot for the tournament just because she could spend time with Adrien, ignoring the fact that it means everything to Max who spent an entire year training for it’
You wanna know what? I am absolutely sick of people saying that the spot belonged to Max and Marinette’s a bitch for stealing it.
Listen you Neanderthals, I’m only going to say this once, so you better listen.
THE GAMING SPOT WAS NOT OWED TO MAX.
So basically, this is what happens in the episode: there’s a gaming contest, and whoever wins represents the school in another gaming contest with another school. Anyway, it means a lot to Max, and he spent all year preparing for it. Max tries, and he reaches second spot, alongside Adrain Agreste. However, Marinette plays and she beats Max, rendering Max out of the competition. This makes Max mad and he gets akumatized. In the end, Mari apologizes and Adrian gives up his spot for Max.
Now ever since that episode, people criticize Marinette because they accuse her of ‘stealing’ Max’s spot.
But that’s not how it should be at all.
It’s not Marinette’s fault she was better than Max. It’s certainly not her fault Max got butthurt and let himself get akumatized. Marinette did absolutely nothing wrong. Yeah, I know it meant a lot to Max, but that doesn’t make him entitled to it. Boo hoo, welcome to the real world, Max. You don’t always get what you want. Suck it up. The main rules of the competition were that the best player represents the school, and the best player was Marinette. Simple as that. And the way they act like Marinette is in the wrong and make her apologize, I don’t like that at all. Marinette shouldn’t have to apologize for being ahead. MAX should have been apologizing for pulling a Caillou just because he didn’t get what he wanted. He acts like a stupid whiny brat. And for all we know, Marinette could have played harder than him.
Also, I hate how everyone sets a double standard for Max and Marinette’s motives. Apparently, Max wanting to represent the school is okay, but Marinette wanting to hang out with Adrian is selfish. It’s not like Max was being selfish, and even more than Marinette. Here’s something that isn’t his, but he has a brat complex that makes him thinks it is. And when reality ensues and Marinette beats him, he throws a tantrum. Also, how is wanting to be around your crush ‘selfish’? Explain that to me please. Maybe it is from a certain perspective, but how is it worse than Max’s?
Also at the end, instead of telling Max he was being a crybaby, they instead REWARD Max by giving him a spot. Seriously, wtf?
This is what made Gamer my least favorite episode. Max was hurt, alright, but he doesn’t deserve anything.
#3 – Her actions in Volpina
‘I wasn't a fan of the Lila gets a crush on Marinette theory before Volpina aired, like you I also go on TV Tropes. Every day. I was more hoping Lila would get a crush on either Adrien or Chloé, and I was happy that she crushed on Adrien. I felt sad she wasn't a super heroine, but I liked her as an akumatized villain, loved her costume, more than Alya's Rena Rouge costume. Still love Lila and the fact that she's the first character in the entire first season that doesn't just accept Ladybug's simple thank you after all the crap she pulled through. Yeah sure Lila wasn't better lying her teeth off, but Marinette not liking Lila being more popular than her before even talking to her, getting so afraid that she gets her eyes on Adrien, whom Marinette herself calls hers while she can't even speak to him properly and isn't even in a relationship with him, stalks them, steal Adrien's book after saying Lila was a thief for doing the exact same thing, then going to interupt them out of nowhere just because she could, abusing her powers in a completely tactless and selfish way, and then spends the rest of the episode taunting her and daring her, while she knows perfectly that villains have no problems killing people (hello Timebreaker), and then when Lila returns to normal, she's surprised that she refuse her apology. After an entire season of lying, stealing and sometimes abusing her powers even when it has nothing to do with saving her secret identity or a villain, I was actually happy that someone didn't forget her for her actions, then going to interupt them out of nowhere just because she could, abusing her powers in a completely tactless and selfish way, and then spends the rest of the episode taunting her and daring her, while she knows perfectly that villains have no problems killing people (hello Timebreaker), and then when Lila returns to normal, she's surprised that she refuse her apology. After an entire season of lying, stealing and sometimes abusing her powers even when it has nothing to do with saving her secret identity or a villain, I was actually happy that someone didn't forget her for her actions’ – the same fan
‘Yeah sure Lila wasn't better lying her teeth off, but Marinette not liking Lila being more popular than her before even talking to her, getting so afraid that she gets her eyes on Adrien, whom Marinette herself calls hers while she can't even speak to him properly and isn't even in a relationship with him, stalks them, steal Adrien's book after saying Lila was a thief for doing the exact same thing’.
One, Marinette didn’t ‘not liking Lila being more popular than her before even talking to her’, she hated her because she lied about being friends with Ladybug. Lila was manipulative bitch and attention whore who happily degraded the name of a superhero WHO RISKS HER LIFE EVERYDAY just so a boy could like her. I mean, imagine – Marinette has almost died in multiple situations, she’s been grounded, she’s watched her loved ones go crazy and hurt her all because of her Ladybug identity, and here someone comes, acts like you’re a piece of trash and degrades her and acts like it’s all for naught. Wouldn’t you be mad? I certainly would, and I think she had every right to hate Lila. And yes, she did stalk them and all, but it wasn’t because she was jealous of them being in a relationship (maybe it was, but 90% of it was the latter), it was because she saw through Lila’s lies and feared Adrien was getting hooked up with a liar – I mean, if you were Marinette, what would you do? And stealing the book, it was Tikki who told her to, because that book was stolen first from its rightful owner. So apparently Marinette is bad for taking a book so she could give it back to Master Fu? That’s like hating the police because they caught a robber and made him hand the money back to the bank he stole from.
, then going to interupt them out of nowhere just because she could, abusing her powers in a completely tactless and selfish way, and then spends the rest of the episode taunting her and daring her, while she knows perfectly that villains have no problems killing people (hello Timebreaker), and then when Lila returns to normal, she's surprised that she refuse her apology
She wasn’t abusing her powers. She was doing the right thing. I mean, if you saw your friend getting in a relationship with someone and you knew that person was bad, you’d warn your friend, wouldn’t you? And I don’t know about you, but where I come from, someone calling out a liar is called ‘justice’. She was surprised when Lila rejected her apology because Lila was the one who instigated it in the first place – Ladybug never did/said anything to her before she came to school, and Lila began badmouthing her for no reason. So of course she’d be surprised.
#4 – Reflekta
Or when she decided to steal the memory card of the photograph in Reflekta, come on. Just ask him instead of stealing.
Uh, HELLO. Did you even watch the episode? She did try, but the guy refused. What other choice did she have?
One final point: Many fans say Adrien is too good for Marinette. The thing is, Adrian is even more flawed than Marinette. What I find funny is, Marinette is vilified by the fandom for doing various things, but Adrian isn’t. For example in Copycat, he lied about Ladybug being his girlfriend. Say what you want about Marinette, at least she never said Adrian was her boyfriend. That episode was like Volpina, except the genders were reversed. Even when LB confronted him about it, he blamed HER and never admitted it was him. At least Ladybug apologized to Lila (even though she shouldn’t have as Lila was more in the wrong than her) but Chat Noir never apologized for lying to Theo, and what makes this even worse is that unlike Lila, Theo never had any bad intentions. In the end he (Adrian) says that Ladybug broke his heart. Nobody ever talks about that. Double standards much? And the fandom says it’s wrong for Marinette to stalk Adrian, yet nobody bats an eye when Adrian (as Chat Noir) prioritizes his crush on her over battling. Since we see the show from Marinette’s perspective, we don’t see much of Adrian so we can’t get a good view of his bad qualities.
So, I think I’ve deconstructed all the reasons for the Marinette hate. Jeez, it’s taken me 3 hours to make this. What’s your opinion? Comment down below. Okay, byee!
Decent debunking 9/10. - visitor
