Top Ten Most Misunderstood AnimalsToptenPizza So many animals have been given a bad name by human culture and it's all mindless and unfair. These are the ones who have been given the worst name.
The Top Ten
People die more often by toilets than by sharks. Seriously... I'm not making this up.
Sharks don't kill humans because they are mean, they sometimes think they are seals. Also, we pull their fins off and leave them to die in the ocean so we can make soup. #PAYBACK - ToptenPizza
Actually, nowadays there is evidence that sharks don't mistake humans for seals, as they attack humans in a totally different way to seals. - Flamesofsilver
I have mentioned this in another list, but yeah, sharks are seriously misunderstood. It is probably down to film portrayals, their appearance and perhaps their attitude towards their offspring in most species, but most people probably only consider the last two because they compare them to humans (I don't know whether this is true, I'm just guessing).
Not only are Shark attacks rare, but if they try to eat you, it's likely because they think you're a seal because of their poor eyesight.V 37 Comments
Why do gorillas represent violence? I mean, they are very gentle and rarely start violence, when they pound their chest it's to seem tough, but they don't want to fight. Watch the YouTube video "KoKo the gorrila cries over loss of kitten" - ToptenPizza
Gorillas are endangered because of trophy hunting even though they have almost never hurt anyone despite their immense power
Human DNA Is The Same As The Great Apes (Gorillas Are One Of Them) 98% Of The Time So It's A Bit Wired To Not Be Able To Understand Them. - 12cc
Gorillas are really gentle and loyal I mean if you get them angry it’s kind of reasonable.V 7 Comments
Pigs are really smart, despite not being able to look up all the way. They are nice, and cute. Lots of people simply see pigs as smelly, dirty, rotten creatures. Those people are heartless!
Both the piglets and the adults are the cutest animals I can think of. Lazing around, rolling in mud and not caring what people think of them somehow makes them more so.
Pigs are actually very clean. The reason they roll around in mud is to cool off. They can't take cold showers.
Piglets are so cute and I think all of the
In this are cute
Expect moths and misqutios
I find it ironic that the predator in a story is the bad guy, considering most of the population isn't a vegetarian or a vegan. The big bad wolf is bad for eating pigs, but we eat pigs. Anyway, wolves rarely attack humans, and are very loyal. - ToptenPizza
Wolves yup there comes the wolf to eat them there not that deadly they only attack when threatened I hate that wolves are always the animal that attacks the hero like in stories they will kill everyone and the hero and kill everything and the predator that does is always wolf they look like careless animals but there not they love there youngs and care a lot about them
I think wolves should be the most misunderstood animal because they really are harmless, wolves are actually afraid of humans and would rather stay away from human habitats. They of corse are going to raid farms because if chickens pigs cows and sheep are all there is to eat then wolves will have to steal food from farms I mean they have to eat!
They are beautiful creatures. - SwiftdawnV 20 Comments
Meerkats are getting killed by Eagles and we need to help
Mice are not dirty little rodents, they are actually intelligent. No one is too small to matter, they are natural students who excel at learning and understanding concepts, they have excellent memories, once rats learn a navigation route, they never forget it. Mice and rats are also highly social animals. They become attached to each other, love their own families, and easily bond with their human guardians. They make sounds similar to giggling when having fun. But who cares about rats and mice, right? - ToptenPizza
Joey's Rattata will wreck you. - MrQuaz680
They are actually really cute, and mostly harmless, I once saves a mouse.
Mice are actually some of the world's most intelligent species. - naFrovivuSV 5 Comments
Snakes are amazing animals and are highly under estimated and are considered as "evil" and "devilish" but really, a snake is just like you and me, a living creature with thoughts and feelings. Not to mention they make brilliant pets. (Not the venomous one star of corse! ) Snakes are amazing and people also think they are ugly and slimy. You will be surprised to hold one, they have smooth scales and they are beutiful creatures, not ugly. Mammals are not the only animals that are "cute" all animals are brilliant and unique in their own way. And snakes, are one of the most greatest animals on earth. And snakes do not bite, unless if they think they are being harmed. They don't care about harming humans! They are the same as any other animal!
I see why people think snakes are dangerous. They can be fatal in one bite and eat their pray whole, I think that's a bit scary. But saying they are all mini versions of the devil or are all evil is just childish. You can say that dogs slobber, because it's a proven physical trait, not a personality one. Imagine if every human had the same personality, well, we are saying that is true to snakes. I love how cunning and fast they are, but they aren't mean. I had a pet snake that escaped a lot that was very active but not evil. Saying snakes are evil without even owning one is just childish, so please stop.
Snakes are not ugly or stupid, they are very beautiful and intelligent creatures. Not all of them are mean, or even harmful. Many snakes are real sweethearts, stop generalizing and saying all snakes are evil or something, because they're not! - starlightsong
I Think snakes should be on number 2 or 1, nobody goes around saying stuff about sharks but when I bring up snakes they get triggered, I love snakesV 14 Comments
People think they are just birds that repeat what we say, they are wrong!
Some people think Possums are ugly and mean. They are SO not ugly. They are really nice, don't chase or attack your pets, and their not mean I will say that again. When they are only in trouble they hiss, drool, try to look tough, and show their teeth. Their only protecting themselves. Don't be mean to them and say their ugly.
They make transcendent pets.
How are lions, cattle, and white tigers misunderstood? Not hating, just asking.
Agreed. Black cats are as good as any other pet. Bad luck? My butt.
This is not true! I have walked past a black cat plenty of times if one happened to be passing by and nothing bad happened afterwards! Black cats are like all other cats and do not deserve this reputation because of a superstition!
The superstition has nothing to do with a race of people. Black has other meanings that have nothing at all to do with race or connotations toward people. Everything is Not about the race card - geez - Billyv

I think spiders are pretty cool and some are actually harmless. They're useful because they prey on nasty, harmful insects like mosquitos and flies that carry disease. If it weren't for spiders, then we would have a problem.
Honestly, there is nothing dangerous about them, unless you saw, say, a tarantula or a black widow. They protect your homes from other, more harmful insects, and you repay them by killing and fearing them. Another reason the human race is stupider than spiders.
Yea they are really nice creatures but... You gotta admit they look creepy. But that's no reason to smack them on site.
I hope lucas the spider changes peoples minds and makes the aprecaite spidersV 16 Comments
Pitbulls have a bad reputation because of dog fighting. Dog fighting is a cruel, illegal and unacceptable act which I think should be banned. (And Pitbulls aren't the only dog fighting breed. The English Mastiff, Cane Corso and Tosa Inu were also used for dog fighting, yet their incidents aren't as well known and their reputations aren't as bad. Either way, I still think dog fighting gives any dog a bad name) Although it's usually the irresponsible owners that are bad rather than the dogs themselves, I still think Pitbulls are more untrustworthy than misunderstood. You just don't want to mess with them. (unless you really want to)
Really? They aren't misunderstood. I get that some of them are nice but a vast part of them are not. Call it stereotype, but it's true. One attacked this harmless cute little west i.e. At the dog park and really hurt it. The little waste was so happy, trotting around and smiling. Then a nasty pit bull went charging after it and pounced on it and the good natured west is was so petrified and hurt he couldn't stop him. I will never look at one the same again. I think they are cute and all, and I'm sure there are very nice ones out there, but you have to admit that a lot of them will attack. Way more than any other dog breed. I don't think they are misunderstood, I just think they are untrustworthy. 'enough said.
Pitbulls are naturally more aggressive than the average dog, so I completely understand what you're saying. But these dogs can be extremely loyal and trustworthy if trained correctly. The pitbull who acted this way must have not been socialised from young by its owner. These dogs generally do not get along well with other dogs, I'm not going to sugar-coat it. But this is why they must be socialised from young to get this behaviour out of them. I definitely do not recommend this dog to a first time dog owner as it can be exhausting to train them, but it's always worth it in the end. As a fellow pitbull owner, I can confirm that these dogs are extremely loyal and trustworthy when with the right owner who knows how to care for them. - CaitlinComet
A dog's aggression (if it is aggressive) isn't because of its breed, it's because of the way it was raised. If a dog is beaten and/or taught to attack people, that is what it will do because that is what it knows. If it is taught to be lovable, that is what it will be.
Pit bulls are so sweet and adorable! How could anyone hate them?V 8 Comments
Don't go trying to mess with bears they are very teritorial but they are constantly being killed for sport by the horrendous thing called HUNTING! They are not all bad, if someone you didn't know came in your house and started touching your kids, wouldn't you be pissed? - ToptenPizza
Hey hunting is not bad! How else do you think our ancestors survived? But I don't hunt bears I hunt squirrels - Katekat123
Bears are beautiful and not savage. Hunting provokes bears and seeking them out can of course make them feel threatened and make them attack. And yes, hunting is wrong. People once used it only when they needed fur and meat, but as a sport it is disgusting to take something's life just for a cruel 'sport'.
Yogi, Boo-Boo, Teddy... Etc - Billyv
I love you guys that love BEARS.
Yes, while Hitler, Stalin, and Vlad the Impaler were all humans we shouldn't forget that Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, and Mother Teresa were also humans. While in most talking animal films humans are either portrayed as pure evil or stupid, in reality most humans are normal people trying to live normal lives.
Humans are jerks.
They kill off entire species! - DragonFires
The greatest creature on earth ever. Smart and while, yes they can be asses and cause global warming but there is still no creature better. Churchill,Gandhi,Jesus,Steven Hawking and all 7.6 billion of us working together changes the world.V 1 Comment
Poor porcupines no one likes them, they don't try to prick you, Derek Small, the director of Wildlife Encounters Zoo says that this is not true. A porcupine cannot shoot its poisonous quills, but it can definitely release them into the face of some animal that starts sniffing it a little too close. - ToptenPizza
I love porcupines! They are so cute and their quills are only there to defend them against predators who want to eat them!
Often thought as cute or funny creatures by the media, but hippos kill more people than any other African animal, and are, in fact, the most dangerous land animal. So you have no hope for escape if you see one chasing after you.
Bats are awesome but they are always associated with creepiness especially on Halloween where it's now totally okay to think of bats as creepy blood-sucking vampires when most bats eat fruit and even mosquitos! Only some bats drink blood but they are not monsters!
Bats are always associates with creepiness. They actually have a network of family and friends and a good social life. When they can have a social life, they are smart. - ToptenPizza
They actually have good eyesight. They just use echo location for hunting small bugs and such.
They are my favorite animal but there not that popular for a favorite animal honestlyV 3 Comments
Did you guys know that there is no law against performing experiments on rats, no matter how painful? Let's say I wanted to cut off a bunch of rats' heads to see how long it took them to die. No law against it. They are just as cute as other rodents like hamsters and Guinea pigs. Rats are way smarter than them, too. You say they're dirty? You would stink too if you lived in sewers. Why do they live in sewers, you might ask. It's because they have nowhere else to go. Cities are to big for people to walk across, imagine how it is for rats! Rats are the only animal besides humans that have been known to laugh (for the right reason). The Bubonic Plague was caused by fleas, not rats. The fleas simply bit the rats. Then the rats bit the humans that were trying to exterminate them.
Sometimes we have to experiment on them scientists are performing new cancer medicines and seeing if they can grow back body parts for the animal. It's not animal abuse we just don't want to risk a human life over a rat's - Katekat123
I also blame executive meddling for trying to make rats the evil version of mice. In fact, if a story or such happens to feature either a heroic rat or a villainous mouse, someone might want to change it to fit the old, outdated and ridiculous stereotype. Remember Chuck E. Cheese? He was originally a rat but was changed to a mouse in the later years. Or how about the Mouse King villain in The Nutcracker? Andrey Konchalovskiy changed him into the "Rat King" in his feature film version of the story because he could not accept a mouse as a villain due to Mickey Mouse's popularity and iconic status. I find that to be ridiculous. Artists and such should be able to have the freedom to design whatever characters they want without someone having to change it for them.
They are so intelligent as well as adorable, plus an ability to develop morality, the bad rep only really comes from the plague, which was the fleas that caused it not rats, if they didn't live on the rats they would've found another creature to live on...
Rats should be at least number 5! They're so misunderstood.V 8 Comments
Also, the furry fandom portrays these poor creatures as sex symbols, which is wrong since they're not sex symbols and should never be.
Why do people portray them as sly animals! They also may kill livestock BUT PEOPLE PORTRAY THEM AS EVIL! #Payback! Also foxes would have no way of knowing that the chicken belongs to a person! People are such idiots! - MichaelAftonUTTP
Foxes are beautiful. Have you ever made eye contact with a fox? It feels amazing. How can you not love foxes?
The evil of poaching. I find a fox skin purse cool, but that's because the animal was killed by a Native American for a nessecity. Just taking an AK-47 and bang bang bang is inhumane.
It's all The Lion King's fault that hyenas have gotten such a horrible reputation and I thought the old folk stories of the past had it bad enough. Hyenas are often mistaken as henchmen or a species exclusive to the villain side because of this movie. For a change, I rather see a good guy/gal that is a hyena instead of another villain that's one. In reality, hyenas are intelligent and excellent hunters who hunt their own prey most of the time and it's usually the lions who scavenge from hyenas more often than the other way around (No offense to lion lovers, just telling the truth).
You know what is sad? Some people actually defend the bad reputation of hyenas, saying stuff like "they make good villains", or "hyena biologists are acting ridiculous", or "we must follow folk traditions since the 'evil hyena' stereotype has been used before so it must be kept being used again and again for generations" or other crud I don't care about. I know fiction is fiction, but The Lion King has been a horrible influence on peoples' views on the animals. Fans of the bad hyenas in The Lion King and The Lion Guard are not true hyena lovers.
Hyenas are my favorite animals. At least they don't kill their kids, like lions!
Only the male lions do this and it's when they take over another pride they never kill their own young but if it's another male's offspring... - Katekat123
I am a Hyena Lover and I have to say, Hyena Biologists ARE acting ridiculous (not defending The Lion King, just saying). Also you people provide no evidence that Lions scavenge from Hyenas. I personally don't think either scavenge from each other. Are you gonna say that we should hunt Lions as "revenge" from scavenging from Hyenas?! Hell no! You people are messed up and don't know anything about the ecosystem!V 4 Comments
They look like the picture on land. Underwater, they supposedly look much cuter. Blobfish look the way they do because they need that type of body for the pressure. When it's underwater, where all the pressure is, it looks near-enough like a completely normal fish. - LemonComputer
Blowfish aren't that ugly. They're actually pretty cute. - Oliveleaf
Ha ha this creature looks funny.
When somebody tells me they got stung by a bee, I always say, "Poor bee." You know why? Because if you get stung once or twice, you'll live. Most definitely. But bees will die. Most definitely. Besides, being scared gets you more prone to be stung because bees mistake it as aggression. If you're not scared, they sting you because you mess with them. If you feel like they stung you for no reason, stop being selfish! The bee died while you just got a little owie! It died, okay? The world bumble bee population is going down and nobody seems to care much. Yes, there's honey, but bees pollinate 90% of crops.
People fear them because they have stingers. They think bees will sting you for no reason, but that's not true. They will only sting you if you mess with them. And then the bee dies afterword, but no one seems to care.
Bees may have stingers, but at least they make honey. It's the wasps that are useless. - Minecraftcrazy530
There was one in my class the other day. Everyone freaked out. I was confused by the panic and felt sorry for the bee. I wonder who was panicking the most.. The bee or the people? - LemonComputerV 2 Comments
Especially the black cats and Persian cats.
Cats are not evil and they are devoted to their owners
They're often hated for looking "ugly" or having a "smooshed face", when they, like the black cats, can be as good and well cared for as any other cat.
They are probably the best thing in the world who hates them? Kill mode is loading. - SwiftdawnV 4 Comments

How are dolphins misunderstood? They are one of most loved animals in the world. Who ever put this on the list in an idiot.
Dolphins are misunderstood as better than they actually are.
What?! Dolphins have a bad rap?!

They're mistaken as cowardly scavengers when they're actually very brave when feeding on a carcass and also hunt prey much larger than they are.
Why do people portray them as weak and cowardly! They can rip an animal up in seconds! Not so cowardly now huh! - MichaelAftonUTTP
Thousands of ants are dying each day. When people keep killing ants, it's actually really mean, because they can't do anything but try to run away. Imagine there are these giants who keep smashing everyone. That's probably exactly how ants are feeling. - Oliveleaf
I find them interesting. - LemonComputer
They bite you when you attack them.(all they want is food.)
They are so misunderstood poor cockroaches most cockroaches are harmless
They are worse than rats I bet. They are almost impossible to get rid of.
I don't understand what they do wrong. They just run around and do nothing else. - LemonComputer
These little creatures are EVIL.
This is my school mascot!
Often hated and misunderstood by anyone who hates insects or thinks they're scary or disgusting, when the fact that a mantis can be a very cool bug. Like the bat and spider, a mantis is also helpful in eating harmful insects.
I agree. They are awesome. - SigmaV84
It's sad that everyone thinks they are the most venomous spider on the world. In fact, they have no venom, so they are not spiders. They're order Oppilliones and not order arachne. They're cute, too! - SigmaV84
How are birds misunderstood?
I love birds
Like cattle, most think of deer as nice or gentle, but can be quite dangerous. Deer especially can be very aggressive during the mating season.
I don't really like hunting animals at all.
Ravens are not evil and are very smart
Corvids (i.e. crows, ravens) are supposed to be very intelligent birds, yet people see and mistake them as 'evil' just because of their appearance. Yes, I know you don't want them bothering you, but that doesn't make them evil as a whole.
Nice coy coy
They only spray people when they get scared. If you don't want to get spayed don't go scaring skunks!
It is believed that they are the meanest animals in the world, yet they are starting to get a positive portrayal in fiction thanks to the "Honey Badger Don't Care" meme and (bleh) The Lion Guard's character, Bunga. I have nothing against the animal itself but I hate Bunga and the whole Lion Guard/Lion King franchise itself. (Bunga is so annoying! ) I find it unfair that a mean old honey badger gets a positive portrayal in the media than nicer animals such as vultures, jackals and *gasp* hyenas.
One annoying stereotype about horses and ponies is that they're often portrayed as toys that only little girls can play with. All ages and both genders should like horses if they want to, and long before vehicles were invented, people used horses as a way of transport back in the old days. Horses and ponies can also be aggressive and even dangerous if treated wrong or in a bad mood. Ponies as girl toys? My butt. Thankfully, My Little Pony appeals to all ages and both genders now, but I still think it's unfair for a guy to be bullied just because he liked My Little Pony or horses in general. You don't see girls being bullied for liking stereotypical guy toys or things the last time I checked...
Not to mention that the black-footed ferret was once an endangered species that was almost extinct in the wild, but was saved by conservation groups (Yay! ). It also doesn't help that even not as viewed negatively as weasels, ferrets still get a bad reputation from the same weasel-haters.
They are often stereotyped that they're aggressive rat-like creatures but they're related to the weasel family (Mustelinae) not rodents! once trained they're the most cutest and sweetest creature of all and if they are aggressive its because of poor handling or neglect if you don't train your dog to behave your going to have of problems but once trained they can become a loving family pet same goes for ferrets. - StarPitfan
I own a ferret and I have never met an animal more gentle, kind, tame, and playful. My ferret has never done anything aggressive. They are some of the best pets hands down. They are absolutely adorable and highly intelligent. They're cuddly and very, very playful. They are not rodents; they are actually extremely capable predators related to weasels; mustelids of the genus mustela. They can learn tricks. They are lively and interactive. They will sleep in your shirt and lay like a baby in your arms. They will play with cat toys and go through tunnels and chase their owners. Ferrets are astounding pets.
Stings do hurt, but won't kill.
A wasp went into my English (American: Literacy) classroom at the date 3rd October. All the other students was running around in panic, the teacher was watching it and trying to calm the class down while being like 'meh', and I was just staying sat at my seat watching the wasp and studying how it was behaving (whilst imagining that the wasp would be most panicked in the entire class because of the sight of giant mass-killing animals running around). I wasn't scared at all, but I was interested and fascinated instead.
I was about to get my notebook out and write what I was seeing from the wasp when the teacher's back was turned. Just at the second I got my notebook partly out, my teacher ended up being forced to kill the wasp to shut the class up and to make them continue with their work. I feel deep pity for the teacher having to do that. :'( - LemonComputer
