Actually, Marilyn Manson is a highly intelligent musical project that is supposed to make people reflect on their own conceptions and what is socially acceptable to them. They are all about criticizing society, especially American, and Hollywood or The American Dream. Just take the stage names of the original line up: each of them is a mix of one beloved icon of America and one infamous criminal, which is supposed to stand for "the good" and "the bad" of America. They usually exaggarate all of this highly to get a reaction out of you ("Antichrist Superstar"). And the fact that you care more about their demonic and vulgar image than about what they actually criticize pretty much is part of what they are all about.
