Agreed. While not a great film, this has more merits than I think people would like to admit. From a technical standpoint, it is quite well done, feeling very cinematic and looking very good, especially with the low budget they had. The fact that it is well acted and is a slow burner also helps, taking time to develop the characters and plot before the icky stuff begins.

On that, while the icky stuff is quite crass and unpleasant, I do feel as though it is at least trying to say something through it, as opposed to the other films in the torture porn genre. Here, we have the sort of anti-torture porn film, where it's goes to extremes that most films in the genre would avoid, it takes any sort of sensualist element out of the picture that many others are guilty of, making it an uncomfortable watch.

In that way, it follows other films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre & Funny Games, whereby it may be as violent as other films in the horror genre, but takes the fun out of it, ...more

9 Last House On the Left (1972)
10 First Blood

Not an action flick, it shows the trauma a veteran has suffered during war. The terrible sequels are patriotic action flicks that are quite contradictary to the message of the first movie that war is a terrible thing that always leaves mental scars.

It's a great movie...

If you look at it from the standpoint of the 1960s Batman, it’s not horrible. Joel Schumacher made a Batman movie according to the way he knew Batman. And that Batman was Adam West’s.
