This is greatly misunderstood. When I posted this song on the top ten darkest songs, I only listened to it once, and di not pay much attention to the lyrics. Really, this song has nothing to do with suicide. It is about how dangerous alchahol is.

We are in that season of the year when stupid people start saying "Almost time to wake up that Green Day dude".
Truth is that the song is inspired by Billie Joe's father who died in this month when he was just a kid. When he knew this he ran to his bedroom and told her mom to wake him up when september ends. And that's the story, folks.
I used to think this was just about a failed relationship. I was wrong. - PositronWildhawk
It's not about drugs, like people on them suggest, it's more about fitting in and learning from the mistake of taking them. - PositronWildhawk
This song was met with mixed reactions as it came out, and that'as because people misunderstood it. It's not just saying "we can achieve anything because everyone else can", it's really reflecting on how lucky we are to have our lives, spanning from our beginnings. It has a large number of hidden meanings. - PositronWildhawk
A lot of people think this song is about drugs but it's really about a time in the song writers life when he was a child and had a fever. - Sabbath
Simply written to confuse people who were trying to read into Beatles songs. Nothing profound. - PetSounds
