Top 10 Modern Games that Deserve the Classic Status

We all know a lot of video games that are considered classics, from Super Mario Bros., to The Legend of Zelda to Metal Gear to Final Fantasy. But in the modern day of gaming there are a good amount of games made today, that share that same level of quality and love that the classics withhold. However, because they are fairly new, they don't quite get the recognition that they truly deserve. So what I want to share in this list are some games of the modern times that should be given that classic status the other games of the past have achieved.

Here are the criteria in which I've set in order for a modern game to be considered a classic:
a.) Modern (duh) so basically games from this generation, but any game after 2010 is acceptable
b.) Have to have good all around critical acclaim from critics and gamers alike.
c.) Have to have decent sales & some popularity amongst casual and hardcore gamers

That is all for the criteria, so here are the modern games that we should consider classics in the long run.
The Top Ten
1 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I personally think this game will be given the classic status in no time. Without a doubt, Nintendo delivered a fantastic open world video game. Despite some minor setbacks, like frame rate issues, the weapon system and maybe a few other nitpicks, this game is a perfect example of a modern classic in video games. It will, no question, be considered one of the best Legend of Zelda games for the rest of the franchise's legacy.

2 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

When this game was first released, it was a huge success. This was the epic fantasy rpg that gamers always wanted. It set the bar for Open World games to new heights. Now granted, Bethesda likes to milk the franchise to death nowadays, it still stands strong as a modern game deserving of a classic status.

3 Shovel Knight

A kickstarter for a video game should always make you suspicious, as there has been many failures from that. Shovel Knight, however, not only delivers in what it promised, but pushes it even more, becoming one of the greatest 2D platformers of today. If you love retro gaming and want to play a game that gives the nostalgic feel of 8 bit as well as being an incredible game itself. Shovel Knight is for you, and for sure, classic status will be given to it in no time.

4 Red Dead Redemption

This open world western was a huge success for Rockstar and now is one of the most respected games of today. With a sequel coming it's way, good things will come for this franchise. Red Dead Redemption is a great video game from this decade of gaming, being incredibly fun, well polished and loved all around. This game for sure will be renowned as a classic.

5 The Last of Us

If any Naughty Dog game from this era of gaming deserves classic status, it's this one. Gameplay wise it's average but what excels with this game, is the incredible story and relationship between the two characters. It exceeds in being an emotional journey with a lot of action and sincere moments. It's already heading on the realm of a classic and in a few more years time, this will no doubt hit that completely.

6 Xenoblade Chronicles
7 Horizon Zero Dawn

One of the best singleplayer games on the PS4 right now. It involves a huge, gorgeous open world, in which you hunt robotic dinosaurs. Released around the same time of BotW, seems like a coincidence that two incredible open world games were released around the same time. I am hoping this game will be renowned as a classic from the PS4 library.

8 Undertale

Not quite AS much so as Mother 3, but STILL

9 Super Mario Galaxy 2

When Super Mario Galaxy 2 hit, it was praised beyond belief, for being one of the best 3D platformers to be made. It seems like a no-brainer that this game will be considered a classic. It already kind of is. One of the best games on the Wii, one of the best Mario games, maybe even one of Nintendo's greatest games.

10 The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
The Contenders
11 Metroid: Samus Returns

As the first true Metroid game in more than 10 years (FF was OK, Other M was a dumpster fire), it saved the franchise from death and brought Samus to an entirely new audience of players, the ones too young to have played the Prime games and only recognized her as a member of the Smash Bros roster.

12 Cuphead
13 Overwatch

One of the best multiplayer shooters in recent years. Good variety in playable characters, good variety in game modes and overall, just a solid and addictive FPS. When first released in 2016, it was hit with critical acclaim upon players and critics alike. Now whether or not you think this is the best FPS ever, that's really up to you. However, I think Overwatch should be given the respect of a classic, for being simply a fun multiplayer shooter that has an evergrowing popularity and player base.

14 Borderlands 2

Def should be higher

15 Mega Man 9
16 Fallout 3
17 Mortal Kombat (2011)
18 Um Jammer Lammy
19 Rayman Legends

Released in 2013, Ubisoft brought back Rayman with an incredible new platformer. Hit with big critical acclaim, Rayman Legends is set to be a perfect member for the classic family.

20 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD Projekt Red did well with their huge fantasy epic RPG. The Witcher 3 was an incredibly fun game with a good story, solid gameplay and a massive world to explore. Even after release, CD Projekt Red continued to improve the game even further. One of the most complete games in awhile that hopefully will be recognized as a modern day classic in gaming.
