Top Ten Most Famous Tolkien Characters

Tolkien, the famous writer of "the Silmarrilion", "hobbit", and "lord of the rings Trilogy", Has many characters in his book. these are the top, most famous and popular of the series.
The Top Ten
1 Legolas Legolas is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. He is a Sindarin Elf of the Woodland Realm and one of nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring. He has been portrayed by Orlando Bloom in the live action movies.

Legolas is by far my favourite Tolkien character, but I know for a FACT that he isn’t the most famous Tolkien character, that title belongs to Gandalf.

Many love this character; for his skill, for his bravery, for his wisdom. one of gandalf's companions and a member of the fellowship, this elf knows how to wield his bow.

This is a list of the most famous characters, not your favorite. I'm sorry, but people are more likely to know about Gandalf or Frodo than Legolas, even if he is awesome.

Legolas is brave, protective, loyal, the true Prince, GREAT Warrior. His connection with Nature is so beautiful! Love the character a lot!

2 Gandalf Gandalf the Grey, later known as Gandalf the White, is a fictional character and one of the protagonists in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He was an Istar, sent by the West in the Third Age to combat the threat of Sauron, as well as leader of the Fellowship of the Ring ...read more.

Gandalf the Gray (later on Gandalf the White) is perhaps the most famous character in the lord of the rings. his fascinating spells, his wisdom, and everything else about him even makes me think of tolkien himself.

People are obviously basing their opinions off personal favorites. Everyone knows that Gandalf is more famous than anybody. NOT LegoLAS. This place must be overrun by teenage girls.

Gandalf is just epic; I composed a list of my greatest 100 fictional characters and he reached #15

One of the most famous literature characters ever

3 Gollum Gollum is a fictional character from J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. He was introduced in the 1937 children's fantasy novel The Hobbit, and became an important supporting character in its sequel, The Lord of the Rings. In Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, he is portrayed via motion ...read more.

the frightful, gross, wicked, but also in a way pathetic creature lurks in the dark damp places and eats fish raw. he killed his best friend, deagole, for the ring; then ran of to the misty mountains with it to hide in the shadows.

Honestly, Gollum should at least be ahead of Legolas!

4 Aragorn Aragorn II, the son of Arathorn II and Gilraen, is a fictional character from J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium and is one of the main protagonists of The Lord of the Rings. He was a great ranger and warrior, and as Isildur's heir he bore the shards of Narsil, reforged and renamed Andúril, in the War of the Ring. In the live action movies of The Lord of the Rings, the character was portrayed by Viggo Mortensen.

Aragorn was a big member of the fellowship. he joked around some, and was a good warrior. he had the royal blood of a king; but he was murdered by uruk-hai.

Aragorn was truly a king among men- honourable, brave, kind & gentle, the personality of Aragorn is one that all men ought to aspire to be.

5 Frodo Frodo Baggins is a fictional character and is the main protagonist of J. R. R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings. He was a Hobbit of the Shire during the Third Age. He was also a Ring-bearer, a best friend to Samwise Gamgee, and one of the three Hobbits who sailed from Middle-earth to the Uttermost ...read more.

Frodo Baggins, Bibo's nephew, is a courageous, adventures hero; and the main character of the lord of the rings. Frodo is willing to do anything for the sake of the world, and to get the ring out of this universe in the land of mordor, along with sauron himself.

6 Melkor/ Morgath

'Morgath' save me

The real dark lord, the most powerful Valar even though he got corrupted by Iluvatar and stuff; still, the only reason why he lost was because the other Valar came to fight during the War of Wrath... (correct me if I'm wrong)

of the silmarrilion, this being was greedy and wanted power, so he vexed the all mighty and gained power, seeking world dominion.

Melkor's later name is Morgoth, not Morgath.
He is on this list two times.
Even though he's a great character, I don't think he's really famous, because he hasn't got the cance to become as famous as the other figures, because he's not in the movies.

A fight between Morgoth and Tom Bombadil; now that would be a different bend in the final fate of Middle Earth!
PS- Tom wins "if he cares to".
Meanwhile, Sauron, the Witch King, and all the other baddies are running for the hills when it comes to these two.

7 Feanor

Feanor created the Silmarils, an act which basically set off the chain of events leading to the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Therefore, he deserves a spot here.

Why are people putting some character from the Silmarillion over Bilbo Baggins?! Bilbo is the most famous hobbit of all. He is THE hobbit.

Get thee gone from my gate, thou jail-crow of Mandos!

Ig for shutting the door in Morgoth's face

8 Bilbo

He should be second behind Gandalf. Bilbo is the main character of the hobbit, one of the best selling books of all time!

Bilbo the Burglar killed Smog, and yes that is cool enough. but this is not that important; what is more important, much more important, is that bilbo baggins himself stole the ring from gollum, and went down in history for being the first to let it go of his own accord.

He finds the ring, beats Gollum in a game of riddles (I know it's not that cool but anyway), tricks Smaug and becomes a hero... AWESOME.

He didn't actually KILL smaug (sry for the spoiler). But I think that the Hobbit is my favorite book of all time! I loved the movie!

9 Sam

Sam is the most loyal and trustworthy friend anyone could ever have. He stuck with Frodo to the very end, and I don't think I would have enough courage to follow my best friend to my possible death I would love to have him as a friend.

the loyal Samwise (Sam for short) always loved the mystic elves beauty. Sam went on the quest as punishment for Evesdropping on Gandalf and Frodo, but was none at all sad in excitement of meeting an elf.

The True Hero Of The Lord Of The Rings.

10 Witch-king of Angmar

If you think about it, The Witch King was really the main antagonist of LOTR: He was the one who traveled to the shire and pursued the hobbits relentlessly for several weeks nonstop, he was the one who gave Frodo the wound he would never truly recover from, He was the one who gathered and trained all the armies of Mordor, he was the one who led all the evil forces to the siege of Minas Tirith/Battle Of The Pelennor Fields, he was the one who killed Theoden, He was the first and only enemy to enter the gates of Minas Tirith, he was the only one able to challenge Gandalf in single combat, he was the one who captured Gollum and tortured him to learn where the ring was, the list goes on...

The Contenders
11 Fingolfin

Legolas doesn't have a chance against "The High King of the Noldo". Fingolfin made Sauron's master scream. He knocked on the doors of Angband (much scarier than Barad-dur) and said that Morgoth was a coward. Then Morgoth came, and the battle began, and Fingolfin wounded Morgoth 7 times, and 7 times Morgoth screamed. Then Morgoth smashed Fingolfin with the hammer Grond. And just as you know, Morgoth was the mightiest Vala, and that means he was the mightiest in all of Middle-Earth (Arda).

Then Legolas comes and fights some orcs (the weak servents of Sarumann, who feared Sauron, who was the servant of Morgoth, who Fingolfin wounded 7 TIMES before he died). There is really no comparison; Fingolfin is far more superior to Legolas. But this is a "fame-contest" so Legolas wins over Fingolfin, but only in fame.

-Nolõfinwe

The patient, brave brother of Feanor. He then challenges Morgoth one-on-one and cuts the Dark Lord's foot off. In all, probably the best Elf in Tolkien's writings, along with Finrod.

He should be up higher, although Fingolfin isn't one of my favorites he's honestly one of the most overrated characters in Tolkien's world... probably just for wounding Morgoth in that 1v1 combat but obv there are other things that the son of Finwë did...

12 Sauron Sauron is the title character and main antagonist of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Originally a servant of the first Dark Lord, Morgoth. Morgoth was later defeated and Sauron fled. He later came back to Middle Earth and took over as the new Dark Lord by using a Ring of Power. He was later trapped by having his Ring of Power cut off his finger. He lived in a shapeless form. Sauron was remanifested as a necromancer and after being banished by a group of elves and wizards, Sauron took over the mind of Saruman. They went out and searched for the Ring. Sauron was finally defeated in the War of the Ring.
13 Turin Turambar

I'd say Turin should be up higher, didn't he kill Morgoth during the War of Wrath? Plus his life is just tragic (although sometimes I find it artificial)..

14 Arwen
15 Glorfindel
16 Finrod Felagund

Finrod is famous?

17 Tom Bombadil

Best quote:
"First, second, neutral, park,
Hie the hence, you leafy narc."
Oh wait, that quote was from the parody version's "Tim Benzidrine"

18 Smaug Smaug is a fictional character and the primary antagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. In Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, he was portrayed via motion capture by Benedict Cumberbatch.
19 Morgoth
20 Merry and Pippin

The two jokesters are frodo's best friends. they aren't very serious most of the time and care more about food than adventure. the two are not related, but are more alike than any other two in the lord of the rings.

It's Friday Friday getting down on Friday! Goota have my bowl gotta have cereal time is going tikin on and on everybodys russiing got a feet down to the bus stop I see my friends! :P laugh out loud

21 Beleg

Honestly, I don;t know how many of you have read the Children of Hurin, but Beleg is one of the most loyal Elves you can find. Turin was cursed my Morgoth (Melkor in the days of the Valar) but Beleg Strongbow follwed him anyway. (Beleg means Mighty in Quenya) He never stopped looking for Turin after Turin ran from Dor-Lomin. He even rescued his friend from the clutches of Orcs. He was friends with Turin until Turin accidentally killed him. Yes, Leggy and Fingolfin and Glorfindel are pretty grat too, the prize should go to Beleg.

22 Thorin Oakenshield

King under the mountain should be number 1

23 Saruman Saruman the White is a fictional character and a major antagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. In the film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he was portrayed by Sir Christopher Lee.
