Top 10 Most Influential Video Game Consoles

The Top Ten
1 Nintendo Entertainment System (Nintendo)

We aren't talking about the best consoles of all time, we're talking about the most influential, and the NES definitely tops that one: They saved the industry from the crash, made some of the greatest characters and games in video game history (Mario, Legend of zelda Metroid) and gave games a story. The NES is the console that the whole industry is based on, it's no doubt the most influential.

Greatest library of games I've ever seen: Super Mario Bros. Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, Contra, Metroid, Blaster Master, Donkey Kong, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, Duck Hunt, Super C, Shatterhand, Vice: Project Doom, Excitebike, Duck Tales, Megaman and Mike Tyson's Punch Out.

Without NES, there'd be no games except Atari games. This is the gaming console that rescued the game industry from bankruptcy. Still after over 20 years, it is still just as fun as it was when it first came out, and I wasn't even born yet. Laugh out loud.

The NES brought the failing video game industry out of bankruptcy. Without it, the PS Series, the Xbox series, and all the other consoles would not exist.

2 Atari 2600 (Atari)

Console very innovative. This console STARTED the golden age of video games. It was in stores from 1977-1993. First VERY popular console. THIS console should be first. Great graphics at its time. Also, games were very fun.

3 Nintendo 64 (Nintendo)

I think people are confusing influential with good/personal preference. The PS2 was a good console with great 3rd party support - but influential? Hardly. The N64 was essentially the birth of 3D gaming.

From a developer's standpoint, it brought many elements of 3D gaming that are still being used today. It's technically ability and power under its hood was ahead of its time (yes, even PC gaming). It brought forth the foundation of some very unique genres, as well as some of the best-selling genres today.

Super Mario 64 built the foundation of not only 3D platforming, but set the bar for fluidity and control throughout that 3D space.

Ocarina of Time set the bar for Adventure/RPG games that still holds its own today. It brought together everything that makes a game great - it's newly invented Z-targeting system, great story line, excellent immersion, one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time, and superior replayablilty.

Super Smash Bros. was a ...more

It pretty much started 3D gaming, Platforming and everything in modern day gaming. Why this is so low? I don't know, but this one box started everything. Influential, uh... Yeah!

The best console ever with the best video games ever: Super Mario 64 and Super Smash Bros. !

4 Wii (Nintendo)

This changed how we play video games. It was the first console to have a remote that doesn't just have buttons. It's the first remote that you could be active while playing video games. I mean it blew X-box 360 and PlayStation 3 out of the park!

It gave us 2 Zelda games and Zelda is the best game ever. And also 2 Mario Galaxy games, and Mario Galaxy is the second best game ever.

Wii convinced so many of my friends to stop being Call of Duty fanboys. All of my friends love Wii! It is so fun!

5 Dreamcast (SEGA)

So far ahead of its time, it's silly. I played the heck out of Dreamcast and was almost crying when it failed and discontinued making games. NFL 2k was better than any other sports game out at the time... Period. RIP Gamecast.

6 PlayStation 2 (Sony)

PS1/PS2 the reason we have the Xbox. Microsoft wanted to compete with play station. And Microsoft didn't just compete, Microsoft crushed Sony by the time Microsoft's second console rolled off the production line. So I give it to Sony. The were so influential, they created the Xbox on accident. Thanks Sony

Okay yest Obviously the best game console of all time hands down but this is a list of the most influential consoles so I could see it not being number one that being said. Did anyone even bother looking at the name of the list this list is completely wack

Better than any other system out there, you should be ashamed of yourself putting all these old consoles out on here

7 PlayStation (Sony)

Another one of the best consoles ever! And its best game: Pac-Man World!

8 Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Nintendo)

Nintendo Entertainment System paved the way by reviving gaming. This finished what the NES started.

9 Gameboy (Nintendo)

That reminds me old days because without it nintendo would not be good

One of the first handheld with cartridges. Handheld gaming started here

10 GameCube (Nintendo)

Well, to be honest, this game had many good games that spread to other places. I bet you wouldn't know about the controller, and the games.

You think the Wii introduced wireless control, well you thought wrong. The GameCube wavebird controller brought us the wireless gaming we like today

The Contenders
11 Odyssey (Magnavox)

The very first game system was actually The Brown Box.

The very first Home console!

12 XBox 360 (Microsoft)

This is the best ever, the graphics are the best Xbox Live is killa, if you is a PlayStation kid you should be ashamed of yourself, They are coming out with a new kind of Xbox, and if you is a PlayStation fellow, you need to switch, cause when everyone else has an Xbox, you'll be sorry

The graphics were FAR beyond the original Xbox. For it's time, it stunned everyone with it's graphics. Xbox LIVE was massively improved, and it influenced online gaming by the MASS.

Actually what did this do? Well it did bring MC to the PlayStation consoles but other than that it didn't really do anything influential

13 PlayStation 3 (Sony)
14 Playstation 4 (Sony)
15 HyperScan (Mattel)

It was a failure but now seems a bit ahead of its time given the current popularity of Skylanders, Disney Infinity, etc.

16 Jaguar (Atari)

A victim of negative hype, the Jaguar was ahead of it's time in many ways, was powerful, had a surprisingly decent library and most importantly paved the way for true 3D games.

17 Xbox One (Microsoft)
18 Genesis (SEGA)
19 Nintendo DS (Nintendo)
20 XBox (Microsoft)
21 Sega Genesis (Sega)
22 Commodore 64
23 Magnavox Odyssey
24 Panasonic 3DO (Panasonic)

Still my favorite of the bunch

25 Virtual Boy (Nintendo)

It's influential, just not in a good way
