Oh, how I love Fiona Apple. I've commented on her songwriting skills before on many different lists, but this time I'm only focusing on this album and its singles. In a time when alternative rock era was in decline following Kurt Cobain's suicide and music took a nose dive into the Teen-Pop wave, and most female voices started to fade into each other, sounding the same, along came Tidal with this unknown woman with such a distinct contralto voice that took people by storm. Her singles from the Tidal, including the hits "Shadowboxer, " "Sleep to Dream, " and "Never is a Promise" did not chart well on mainstream charts, but did achieve moderate success on rock charts. But it was the one smash single, "Criminal, " and its highly controversial music video that launched Tidal into music history.
