10 Most Overrated Animated Series

The Top Ten
1 My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is an animated children's television series based on the fourth incarnation of Hasbro's My Little Pony franchise. The show follows a studious unicorn (later an alicorn) pony named Twilight Sparkle (Tara Strong) and her friends Applejack (Ashleigh Ball), Rarity (Tabitha St. Germain), Fluttershy (Andrea Libman), Rainbow Dash (Ball), Pinkie Pie (Libman), and dragon assistant Spike (Cathy Weseluck). They travel on adventures and help others around Equestria while solving problems that arise in their own friendships.

Quite overrated. Especially since mlp has been around since the 1900s. When this new version comes out, everyone's like " SO COOL MUST WATCH". I bet half of their fans, or "bronies", that think this show has "unique characters" and an "interesting story line" don't even know that there was a mlp before this one. Plus, the fact that they made them into humans totally ruined the whole point of My Little PONY. NOT HUMAN. They're doing too much with this show, they're changing everything about what mlp used to be, and I wish they could just go back to the 2005 version instead because I honestly liked that one a whole lot better. The fan base is also a little out of whack. I have no problem with older men liking it, but a lot of mlp fans draw mlp in anime style. I like anime, and I know lots of fan bases do this with other cartoons, but other fandoms are changing the STYLE, while mlp fans are changing the ponies into different ORGANISMS. I just really don't see how this new show is so ...more

As much as I like the show, I'm not afraid to admit that this show has gotten a bit too much attention. The only reason why I say the show is great is because I just like it that much. It's just my opinion. Also, is it weird that society is making a big deal over men watching an irreverent little girls show? Oh well.

Terrible fanbase who are intolerant of those who don't like their show. Plus the disgusting fanfiction that centers around this show... Ugh, it's like a plague. When will it go away? It's a show for little children, stop corrupting innocence!

I have no idea why this show is so big. I've seen a few episodes. it's incredibly generic. If it had come out in the 90's it would have been washed under a sea of other shows. Maybe because the bar's getting set lower and lower nowadays?

2 Phineas & Ferb

Phineas and Ferb is deliberately set up to be the same episode every time. That's the point. It's satire of an entire genre of entertainment. It just happens to also be entertaining and comedic, and contains a good bit of meta and self-referential humor. Why isn't this lower on the list?

While this should is undeniably popular, I wouldn't say that's the same as being overrated. It certainly is popular, and was heavily promoted by Disney. But I regularly hear people criticizing it for its flaws as well. People don't really seem to hype it up as THE BEST THING EVER! One of the most popular cartoons? Absolutely. Over-emphasized by Disney? Probably. But one of the most overrated animated series ever? Eh, not really.

This show is about two kid's, both with unusual shaped faces, making abnormal stuff. Their pet is a platypus - which are dangerous believe it or not because of their defense mechanism skin- that's actually a secret agent! Ooh! :O The platypus goes to fight this retarded villain almost every episode.

That's about it

I hate this show there is no imagination put into it. It is the same thing over and over again. Very bad role models like how Candace always tries to get them in trouble. Phineas and Ferb are clueless and this is the most overrated show ever.

3 Avatar: The Last Airbender Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American animated television series that aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in an Asiatic-like world in which some people are able to manipulate the classical elements by use of psychokinetic variants of Chinese ...read more.

I really like this show, but I don't think that it's the nearly flawless masterpiece that many people see it as. I don't think that it started to get great until after season one, and even then there were still uninteresting episodes, and a several forced major plot points, especially with Azula and the Dai Li. Despite my criticisms, I did love most of the show. The animation was excellent, there were many memorable lines of dialogue, and the character development was a joy to see. Nevertheless, there are still negative aspects that prevent me from loving this show as much as other people.

Some part of me hates this show but, at the same time it's not the absolute worst in animation that I have ever seen. Compared to say, modern family guy or most adult animated shows in western animation it's pretty good. However, it's not nearly as good as so many people appear to claim it is. it's overridden with cliches with bland, boring characters, and a setting that is virtually everywhere in high fantasy, the show's genre. Then there's bending, perhaps one of, if not the weakest and most pathetic abilities that I have ever seen in this kind of setting hell, even for the kind of ability bending is it's pretty awful. Did I mention that this show's universe is one of the weakest and most awful worlds I've come across? because it is.

"Avatar is so overrated. It's just way too predictable and repetitive. The storyline is so shallow that they drag on the fight scenes forever. It's just a mountain of noise in the end. "

That's all a big fat lie. You may not know it but's deeper than you think. Besides, it's not all about fighting.

If you actually take the time to look closely at Avatar, you'll see that it's similar to real-life situations at certain times.

Overrated show, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Overrated does not equal bad! You are interpreting the word "overrated" as terrible. Overrated just means hyped and set on a higher rating than what it deserves to be. What does ATLA actually served to be ranked on? It's currently 100% on rotten tomatoes, and that doesn't mean it's bad.

4 Dora the Explorer Dora the Explorer (2000 - 2019) is an American preschool educational animated TV series created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh, and Eric Weiner in which Dora goes on adventures with her friend, a monkey named Boots.

Q: What's the similarity between Internet Explorer and Dora the Explorer?
A: They are both explorers and take a long time to do an easy task.

Most annoying show ever... Gosh my nephie looks exactly like her... I believe she cut her hair like doras' to have a similar appearance

So stupid nobody likes you, your ugly and come on who even watches nick jr.

Dora is so stupid and overrated!

5 SpongeBob SquarePants SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series created by marine biologist and animator the late Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. SpongeBob is currently the most popular show on Nickelodeon, as well as the longest running show, running for 23 years, and is beginning its 13th season. The show revolves around a sea sponge called SpongeBob SquarePants and his adventures under the sea. The show is considered to be one of the best Nickelodeon and cartoon shows of all time.

The popularity of this show remains incredibly high, even after the sharp decline in show quality that happened sometime around when the movie was released.

All the newer episodes feel like they've lost the spark that the earlier ones had.

If Rocko didn't exist, this show wouldn't exist. SpongeBob was never really "revolutionary" the way that people said it was. And yeah, SpongeBob basically sucks now.

I've never really liked SpongeBob that much. It's an okay show, but this... This is seriously overrated.

This show used to be AWESOME until about 2004, and then until about 2008, it was a "meh" show, and now, it's an absolute failure.

6 Pokemon Pokémon, abbreviated from the Japanese title of Pocket Monsters and currently advertised in English as Pokémon: The Series, is a Japanese anime television series, which has been adapted for the international television markets. It was first broadcast in Japan on April 1, 1997, in the United States ...read more.

The series was okay to begin with, but now it's gotten super repetitive and boring with all the "let's help out our friends" and "Oh no! It's Team Rocket's worst members trying to go after Pikachu! " cliche's. Nothing that made the first Pokemon games fun is even in here anymore. It's a disgrace to good anime's that are out there.

This Anime/Cartoon/whatever floats your boat is simply not that good. It ignores almost everything from the games. Pikachu beating a special defensive behemoth like Regice with special moves? No problem. Rhydon? Aim for the horn. Honestly, why the hell watch people something like that?

Pokemon is not overrated!
It is overrated because it is simply, amazingly, good... Not because is does not deserve it!

Most overrated show ever. And not
To mention those gosh-awful Pokemon cards that everyone is obsessed with.

7 South Park South Park is an American adult animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for the Comedy Central television network. The show is about four boys, who are Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick, and their adventures in South Park, Colorado.

It's my second favorite show. It's a great show with funny characters and unforgettable animation and adventures! But, well, it has its ups and downs. Some characters are terrible or just I flat out hate (Like Stan's sister. ) But I like Stan, I like Cartman, I like Kenny, I like Butters, And my favorite is Kyle. But overall, it is a uniuqe and just flat out AWESOME show! But it is kinda overrated... But again, overall it's a fantabulous show!

I don't know. I just can't find South Park funny. I hear people repeat a joke from SP or say a similar joke and I will find it absolutely hilarious but when I see SP do it, I feel nothing. And I don't know if it's just me, but I find the jokes very predictable. Or at least, non of the jokes or points they're trying to get across with the jokes feel new or original. And even if they are, they just don't feel clever at all to me.

It's innaproppiate, it's disgusting, it has weird humor, that's why it's, My. Favorite. Animated. Show. Of. All. Time! It's an awesome show! The characters are so memorable and each episode is unpredictable, the theme is great too! That's why it's great! So by overrated, it truly means just beloved by many! GO SOUTH PARK!

Stupid series about nothing. They showed one and the same thing in every episode plus its dialogues had bad influence on children and teens

8 Family Guy Family Guy is an American adult animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series centers on the Griffins, a family consisting of parents Peter (Fat, Idiotic Dad) and Lois (Nagging Bitchy Wife), their children Meg (Socially Awkward Daughter) Chris (Fat, Idiotic Son), and Stewie (Sociopathic and Genuine Infant); and lastly Brian (Anthromorphic Pet Dog). The show is set in the fictional city of Quahog, Rhode Island, and exhibits much of its humor in the form of cutaway gags that often American culture. ...read more.

"This show is offensive, retarded, and not even funny. I don't understand why everyone likes this show when it's just another show with overused jokes that are somehow turned into something racist. "

I couldn't have typed that better myself. Whoever down-rated you has no respect for your opinion. Anyone hates Family Guy is cool in my book depending on who he or she is.

Unfortunately as I couldn't say more often to Family Guy. It was funny once of its characters like Stewie and cutaway gags, now it's more vulgar and inoffensive at worst. At more offense the show is running out of ideas like The Simpsons reach into later years.

It's hilarious when you're certain race, religion, or political views aren't being made fun of. Unfortunately, that's all what this show is about. Family Guy isn't as good as American Dad, but every one in a while, FG will make a quality episode I.E. back to the Pilot.

There was an episode where a guy was beating Meg up to a pulp. It pissed me off because it was at school, a guy actually had the nerve to want to fight a girl, and it's teaching guys that it's okay to beat up on women.

9 Pokemon: Indigo League
10 Steven Universe Steven Universe is an American animated television series created by Rebecca Sugar for Cartoon Network. The show's based around a young boy by the name of Steven Universe, who is a hybrid of a gem and a human. He lives with his gem friends, Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl.

Besides a bland unispired Disney meets hipster indie and has a threesome with hip hop inspired pop soundtrack. There's the issue of uncreative animation, progression that honestly is regressive, mixed messages on gender, race and sexual orientation equality, bad voice acting and of course the most rotten fanbase for a cartoon I've witnessed. I don't personally see the appeal of this mess. I'll skip it! (Seriously though it's like the worst parts of the Brony fanbase leveled up in douchiness)

The reason this show is overrated is not just the show itself, is because of 2 things:the fan base and how much they loved it! It felt like irony that people started watched the first time and they obsessed with it. Is like the Walking Dead!.

This is Overrated. There is a Bunch of Fans Who Say That it isn't Overrated. Well, They Are Liars. I Saw a Comment on YouTube Saying "if You Hate SU You Hate Jesus". They Treat SU Like a God, and Try to Kill Whoever Hates it.

They should have put this show in the top 5 its fan base tries to hard and they are easily offended

The Contenders
11 Samurai Jack Samurai Jack is an American action-adventure chanbara animated series created by Genndy Tartakovsky for Cartoon Network. The series premiered on August 10, 2001, with a TV movie called The Premiere Movie, before ending in its fourth season on September 25, 2004, without concluding the story. A revival ...read more.

Shut the hell up, ya AniMat-bashing Modern Sony fanbrat! There are good reasons why not everyone thinks Modern Cartoon Network trumps Classic Cartoon Network! Genetic Tartakocsky cartoons are far more creative, clever and engaging than the Hotel Transylvania franchise and you know it!

12 Naruto Naruto is an anime and manga franchise Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto. The manga was later adapted into a television anime, which was produced by Studio Pierrot and Aniplex. It premiered across Japan on the terrestrial TV Tokyo and other TX Network stations on October 3, 2002. The first series ...read more.

Someone even went as far as to say Sword Art Online is more overrated than Naruto. Okay, I know Sword Art Online is very overrated, but the person who said Sword Art Online is more overrated than Naruto is sadly mistaken. If anything, Naruto is way more overrated than Sword Art Online. At least Sword Art Online didn't try to stab its fans in the back by running a barrage of filler episodes for an entire year! Because that's what Naruto, or in this case, Naruto Shippuden, did. Sword Art Online may be very overrated, but people are sadly mistaken if they think Naruto is not more overrated.

This is the most overrated anime right now. Glad, One Piece is not on the list. They say that Naruto is way much better than one piece because they have better fights. But One Piece has better story. Naruto is just filled with emo characters who want to die after losing to someone.

The first season of Naruto up to the fillers and Shippuuden was actually good. The character development and back-stories were actually captivating and got you in the feels. But I have to admit, the fillers were terrible and Shippuuden's quality has been up and down too much.

Funny but not enough challenge. He is not even close to anyone on dragon ball Z. For dbz everything is thought out and the fights may take a while but that's because they are moving so fast animator a have to slow it down.

13 Rugrats Rugrats is an American animated television series created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain for Nickelodeon.

There is no way you could watch a show of babies and it almost and certainly would have been a preschool cartoon. Minus the episodes that focused upon Angelica the show's only best character, I may have imagined the show is aimed for little children.

Reasons I don't like rugrats (if you disagree that's fine)
1. Animation is ugly
2. Characters are either bland or annoying as hell
3. Angelica is my most hated character in all media and ruins every scene she's in for me
4. It got worse as time went on

14 Batman: the Animated Series Batman: The Animated Series is an American animated television series based on the DC Comics superhero Batman.

10 Comic Books Animated Shows better than Batman: The Animated Series (even though there are more than 10):

#1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Animated Series (2003-2009)
#2. The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2010-2012)
#3. Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998)
#4. X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997)
#5. The Batman (2004-2008)
#6. The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-2009)
#7. Fantastic Four: The Animated Series (1994-1996)
#8. Wolverine and the X-Men (2009)
#9. Teen Titans (2003-2006)
#10. Marvel's Spider-Man (2017-Present)

In Conclusion: Just because something is EXTREMELY Dark and Edgy doesn't automatically mean it's good. If it lacks good comedy, good story, realistic characters and (more importantly) heart (the above mentioned shows have all these qualities) then it is not a good show.

Why is this show still considered the best just because it was the first modern Batman show. If you ask me, most people say it is still the best out of nostalgia. For me, The Batman (2004-2008) is the best Batman animated show.

While better than Batman: The Brave and the Bold (though that's not saying much), It feels like a watered-down version of Batman and his world (yeah I said it!). It's dead serious and formulaic, basically random episode that doesn't go anywhere after random episode that doesn't go anywhere. There is no humour which makes the show and characters feel lifeless (Mark Hamill was okayish as the Joker but isn't actually that chilly or funny) and Kevin Conroy's Bruce Wayne makes Val Kilmer's look like Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark.

This should definitely be in the top 10. I really don't see why this is the best superhero animated series of all time. X-Men, Spiderman, Superman, Young Justice and The Avengers were all FAR better.

15 American Dad! American Dad! is an American adult animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman for the Fox Broadcasting Company and currently on TBS. American Dad! is the first television series made to premiere on the network's Animation Domination block. The series premiered on February 6, 2005, following Super Bowl XXXIX, with the rest of the first season airing three months later beginning May 1, 2005. American Dad! is a joint production between Underdog Productions, Fuzzy Door Productions and 20th Television Animation and syndicated by 20th Television.
16 Adventure Time Adventure Time is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. It's a decent show but it's not nearly as good as people make it out to be. The characters are annoying and unlikable. Many of the episodes are either forgettable or just not very good. Even though it has some good episodes, it is very hit and miss and does not deserve the amount of praise it receives.

I hear the show is really good, and I've actually tried watching it. But I don't get what's so funny. I don't know when they're trying to tell a joke or when they're not. And I don't get all the praise. People are calling Adventure Time stuff like the best cartoon of the 2010s. But like I said, I just don't get it.

I like it, but it's a little overrated. But the only problem I really have is that the newer episodes are hard to keep up with. Sometimes, you just can't miss an episode or you'll be confused.

This should be number one. It is very original, but annoying, babyish, somewhat maniacal and an insult to children's intelligence.

17 The Simpsons The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom created by Matt Groening that originally started on April 19, 1987 as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. It got its own series on December 17, 1989 and is still running as of 2023, making it the longest running animated sitcom. It is about a man named Homer Simpson and his family (wife Marge and children Bart, Lisa and Maggie and pets, Snowball II and Santa's Little Helper) going through a long series of misadventures.

Like, at times the show is funny, but it's really not as funny as people give it credit for in my honest opinion. Some people may say "Oh it's just not funny to you because you don't get the jokes". Well actually I do get the jokes it's just that it's not THAT funny. And the jokes aren't always so well created either. Like a group of people from a church panicking and running into a bar while the bar people do the dame thing but vice versa. Sure it is ironic, but I have seen WAY more funnier and creative jokes from OTHER cartoon shows. And spider pig? Dude like what the heck?! I mean, don't get me wrong. It is a pretty good cartoon show. But as for it being the best cartoon show like what a lot of people give it credit for? I think not. Again, this is all IN MY HONEST OPINION

The Simpsons should have ended a long time ago, but they're still milking off the series as much as they can.

The Simpsons used to be clever, creative and featured original jokes. Now it's nothing but catch-phrases and satire (which only makes people feel awkward and build up angst). Really hope this show ends sometime soon...

It hasn't gone downhill, people are just bored of it. Sure they made some bad episodes that Principal Skinner episode, but it had a couple of funny bits, Homer eating the dog food, every single part with Skinners mum. But episodes before that weren't perfect. Many people hate the first season, call many episodes dull.

From S1 to S13 the show was good. Now it's offensive to what the Simpsons once were.

But for what they WERE, this is still the best cartoon I've ever watched.

18 The Boondocks The Boondocks is an American animated sitcom created by Aaron McGruder for Cartoon Network's late-night programming block, Adult Swim. It is based upon his comic strip of the same name. The series premiered on November 6, 2005.

I know Season 4 was a bit bad but it doesn't make the show bad! I bet it's mostly white people voting for this show because it's the Black Humor and the White references... Whoever votes for this, you clearly don't have any taste of comedy

This doesn't belong on the list, it's intelligent and hilarious. If anything, it's underrated.

Why is this on the list!?! This show is hilarious! You people have no sense in comedy

19 The Powerpuff Girls The Powerpuff Girls is an American animated television series created by animator Craig McCracken for Cartoon Network. This show is annoying. Everyone says "ooh, girlfriend is my favourite show! " I watched a season thought of it as kinda boring and not really that much plot.

But, as a good citizen, I will respect your opinions as I hope you do.

Thank you for your time,
~The girl whose to lazy to make an account

Extremely overrated, I just can't enjoy it. It feels like a typical disney kids show. not really for adults.

This show sucks

22 Futurama Futurama is an American animated science fiction sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company.
23 Drawn Together Drawn Together is an American adult animated sitcom which ran on Comedy Central from October 27, 2004 to November 14, 2007. The series was created by Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein, and uses a sitcom format with a TV reality show setting.

I saw this and I'm just disgusted.

24 Attack on Titan Attack on Titan, also known as Shingeki no Kyojin in Japanese, created by Hajime Isayama, is one of the most popular Japanese anime series to be released. It was first watched in Japan during 2013 and was dubbed in English to be watched in America in 2014. It is best known for its emotional moments, apocalyptic setting, and its dramatic story line, and action packed scenes.

This show is in no way overrated. It is high on the anime list for a reason; great plot line and animation. The story is compelling and brilliant. This is definitely one of the best anime. Of course some people don't like the thrilling action a violence, but that doesn't make this overrated.

I do not see what is so good I get it giant the character have no personalty
The story is just boring the only thing good is the concept.
It's sad because I love anime and manga and I all so have the first 4 vol of Attack on Titan

Violent, ugly, depressing. After all the hype that I'd heard, a disappointment.

Boring, that's the word to describe this anime.

25 Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball Z is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation. Dragon Ball Z teaches valuable ...read more.

It's creative it's unique, it's action-packed, and the characters are very genuine. THIS is what made anime cool again. Astro Boy was the last cool manga Japan had, then this came and Akira Toriyama won God knows how much money with this iconic masterpiece.

Okay, maybe it's NOT a masterpiece, but it changed a lot of ways to think about many things, and changed a lot of things in cartoons in general.

There is an entire season for one fight... It drags on, especially since the fights are composed of animation loops and screaming. Just watch any other superhero cartoon.

Doesn't really make any sense. It takes a whole episode to show something that can be shown in just a few minutes.

Please watch Dragon Ball Z Kai or read the original manga instead if you have a short attention span
