Jimi Hendrix (born November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter . Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated ...read more.
Saying Jimi Hendrix is an overrated guitar player is like saying jesus is an overrated Christian. Jimi made sounds on the guitar that people didn't know were possible.
Sloppy, out of tune, arrhythmic, lazy. He created new tonality and methods of playing, but his playing in general is horribly amateur at best. We're supposed to like him because the music industry says so. True musicians understand that while he was innovative in tone, he is absurdly overrated.
Honestly, like Ringo Starr (the drummer of the Beatles), Jimi Hendrix was mostly an innovator. The best guitarist belongs to people like Jimi Page, Eric Clapton, Alex Lifeson, Yngwie Malmsteen, and many others. So yes, I would say he is overrated, but not bad by any means
Reasons Jimi Hendrix should not be on this list:
Some of his music is easy to copy, but the raw power he puts out is impossible to duplicate. His contributions to the guitar are unlike any other's. I honestly don't think that Avenged Sevenfold and Megadeth fans should be left without adult supervision on this site.
I find it funny that people are calling Clapton better than Hendrix, considering Clapton himself walked off stage after being showed up at how good he was compared to himself.
Anyone that says Jimi Hendrix's playing was simple obviously can't play his music, Little Wing comes to mind. What a joke. Hendrix actually played on the chittlin circuit with the guys that The English players like Clapton were coying. Before insulting the memory of the best rock virtuso of all time to date. Do some research.
Why the hell is here here? Hendrix changed rock completely. He was really the first guitarist who introduced the idea of using the guitar as a lead role instrument and not a backing instrument. He does not belong here. - DavidBondra
Jimi Hendrix is basically the Citizen Kane of Guitar, he revolutionized how people play guitar today while creating a new genre but if his debut wasn't until the 80's or 90's not nearly as many people would worship him as the god he is
Don't get me wrong I love Hendrix and he was an amazing player, but that doesn't change the fact that Jeff Beck was a much much greater guitarist than anyone to ever pick up a guitar.
Jimi was pretty bad. He had some moments but I really cannot stand the "well, for his time he was amazing" bs, no he wasn't. The instrument has existed in its current form, although not with amplification and effects, for more than 400 years and we have music from people in the 1600 and 1700s that made this guy sound like a doof with a tonka truck. It is the same, it is the same instrument and it is in complete parity. Just because somebody electrifies it and adds distortion doesn't mean that all of a sudden you can be garbage in the technique department and get a medal. I like Jimi, but I want to puke when he is number one on every single guitar list for ever and all time because he isn't.
Anyone who thinks JH was overrated is a silly ass hipster who: #1 wants to show how different they are with "against the grain" opinions.. #2 haven't heard anything he's done besides "Foxy Lady".. #3 have no idea what a good player is, because they're not real players themselves... There's a countdown for ya. Kma.
Influential, talented, exceptional playing (teeth playing). But I'd say he is still overrated. - zxm
Why is he on this list. People talk about him a lot because he was good and he deserves all the praise he gets
He is the greatest who ever lived - matt1
If your just trying to seem edgy and hipster by voting for Hendrix, how bout picking up a guitar and trying to play any one of his solos. Anyway, without Hendrix to inspire pretty much every rock guitarist that came after him, the history of guitar would be very different. Of course many famous guitar gods came before Hendrix, although pretty much all of them played in a blues-ish style, just with that rock flare. Hendrix basically started from scratch and created his own style of playing the guitar, and everyone followed.
He could out shred any guitarist ever. Even someone like Buckethead or Prince wouldn't stand a chance against Hendrix. He's the greatest ever. I'll leave it at that
Who in the world may think Jimi Hendrix is overrated? Only a person with listening problems. - Juniorxtrm
How is he overrated? He is one of the best, if not the best Guitarist! - Strobo
In a sense Hendrix put himself into beign nothing more than a showman when he was on stage and then he got trapped into that. On studio he could sound amazing. Nobody sounded like Hendrix in 1967 and on record he sounded fresh, with some amazing tones, sounds and licks; but on stage he used to be sloppy and most of his guitar playing live is messy, unfocussed and noisy
I wish he would have lived to be 90, so we wouldn't have to hear how great this dude is!
If you voted for him you have no idea what your talking about so just stop - matt1
Please stop saying Angus Young's riffs are so simple when you know yourself you can not play the riffs better than Angus Young himself. I'm sorry but Jimi is way too overrated and not that he is not a good guitarist because he is, but his guitar playing doesn't wow me. People need to accept the fact that it's not impossible for someone to be better than Hendrix.
He only died at the young age, which automatically made him "the best"
Awesome guitar player, but in my opinion he isn't the best (definitely in my top 5 though)
I feel that Jimi Hendrix was a good guitar player but overrated. Look at what he has done played 3 songs people can name off the top of their heads and one of them is a cover. With a boat load more no one cares about. People who have just picked up a guitar say he's a god. Ask one of them to name some of his songs? They can't. Most Hendrix fans are people trying to bring on a new Hippie wave or just have those three magic songs playing over and over.
I think there are better guitarists out there!
