Top 10 Most Overrated Movies of All Time

Many won't agree at first, I know this. But watch one of these films again and think.
The Top Ten
1 Avatar

Avatar has incredible visual effects, but that carries the film. It doesn't disguise a generic story and borrowing stuff from films that aren't that good. It rips off the entire plot of Pocahontas.

This is a movie you must see in 3D. It's just lost without it. The non-3D, or let's call it flat, version lacks much of the visual thrill of the 3D version. If you have only seen the flat version, it would be easy to think this movie is overrated. My only objection to the movie was the blatant rip-off of Roger Dean's artwork. Absolutely no credit was given to him, as Cameron did to H.R. Giger in Aliens. Yet, those familiar with Roger Dean's artwork will recognize it immediately in this movie.

2 Titanic

Titanic is alright at best. It's definitely not the masterpiece everyone says it is. The runtime is way too long, Jack and Rose's romance is poorly written, and the plot is cheesy. The best part is the harrowing depiction of the sinking of the Titanic, but that takes up only 1 hour of the 3-hour runtime. The fact that this won Best Picture over Good Will Hunting is absurd.

Start with Kate Winslet's faux California accent in a character who should have sounded barely different from a London socialite. Next, accept for a moment that a cosseted aristocrat of 1912 was a secret sex fiend (entirely plausible). Would she not have been tuned into the gossip of all the horrors that befell easy girls? I'm not saying she wouldn't have jumped a low-born drifter, but not without wildly mixed feelings before, during, and especially after.

Now, consider the laws of physics and physiology. The water outside is cold enough to put rime ice on Jack's failing body. But inside the ship, apparently, it warms to the temperature of a cool swimming pool. Prolonged dunking only brings hypothermia under an open sky.

3 Frozen

Frozen is like every single dumb Disney movie out there. They are literally just copy and paste, and the animation is the only good part. The rest of it sucks.

I generally did not enjoy Frozen. My parents and I were the sole audience in the cinema during our viewing. The setting was lackluster, and the characters failed to captivate. Initially, I had high expectations due to positive feedback from other countries. My fondness persisted until I recognized the film's mediocrity. Reflecting on my initial impression, I question my judgment. The fervent fanbase only exacerbates this sentiment. Their outbursts towards anyone not sharing their affection for Frozen are abhorrent. It reminds me of the zealotry surrounding Minions.

4 Black Panther

This film is good. It was enjoyable. However, it was not $1 billion box office, most critically successful MCU film, Golden Globe-nominated, Oscar buzz good. Seriously, this is the Marvel movie that gets all that praise? The two films that came between it, Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War, were both much better. And honestly, like with Get Out, this film wouldn't have done anywhere near as well as it did if it wasn't for the representation. Nevertheless, the soundtrack and costumes were good.

I loved Black Panther. I also love what the movie did, and continues to do, for the Black community. It will always be legendary for that. I also loved the movie's villain. But… I feel like we never really got a sense of who Black Panther was. When you consider the other Marvel character introduction movies, we got much better background stories into who they were.

5 The Lion King

The Lion King is undoubtedly a great animation, but I do think it's overrated compared to some other Disney animations which are less revered than this one, but just as good.

First and foremost, this movie is heavily influenced by Bambi, yet Bambi is nowhere near as acclaimed as this movie. I just watched Bambi (1942) for the first time last week, and I was amazed by how much influence that movie had on The Lion King, especially the ending. However, I don't see people citing Bambi as the greatest Disney animation of all time, even though it's just as good as The Lion King.

Also, if we compare The Lion King to other Disney animations like Snow White, Pinocchio, and Aladdin, it could be argued that those movies are just as good, if not better than The Lion King.

Don't get me wrong, I love The Lion King, but I just think it gets way too much praise, while some other Disney movies are very underrated compared to this one. I mean, TLK has a 8.5/10 rating on IMDB, while Snow White, Pinocchio, and Bambi are rated 7.6, 7.5, and 7.3/10 respectively. Are those movies inferior to TLK? I don't think so.

6 Forrest Gump

This is the most absolutely horrendously stupid film I've ever seen in my life! The director has as much talent as a leech with a hot rock in its face. He can't tell whether anyone is following a script, which must have been written in the alien language of Zyxxyzzy before being poorly translated into a dialect that they didn't understand. The acting itself is all very basic and uninspired. Not putting a thought into how serious or silly it sounded, making every second of this film more dull than Vertigo. Everything about this film lacks any sense of quality, and that's why I loathe it to infinity.

7 Twilight

It deserves to be number one for overrated movies, or rather, a worthless and trashy movie of all time. It's basically about a teenage girl having a problem choosing between her suitors, plus they changed the perception of what vampires and werewolves really are. In my childhood, I usually feared these kinds of creatures because they were very scary and portrayed as ferocious monsters, until this movie showed up and ruined everything. Kudos to Stephanie Meyer for adding a worthless novel to this century.

8 The Wizard of Oz
9 The Hunger Games

I read the book before watching the movie and I can say I was very disappointed. The characters were bland and uninteresting. Jennifer Lawrence, although she is a brilliant actress, was like a statue in this movie, barely showing emotion. She turned a character who is very likable in the books into a bland and boring character. I wouldn't have cared if she had been killed off. The movie could have explained certain aspects much better - for instance, showing rather than telling. The characters were uninteresting robots that I didn't care for at all. However, the sequels are a lot better. I feel like Francis Lawrence did a much better job.

10 La La Land

Outstanding performances, awesome use of colors and lighting, but... boring as hell. Showtunes sound like outdated forties/fifties musicals, and the dancing tries to look (and does not succeed) like a Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movie. In my opinion, it was not Oscar-worthy.

The plot of this film moves too slowly to hold any attention. It reaches the point where you think, okay, guys, just get to the sex already. It's like waiting for a sex scene that never comes. I'm assuming it was too boring to watch until the end. Thank goodness it didn't win the Oscar.

The Contenders
11 The Dark Knight

Anyone who thinks that Twilight is more overrated than this should [Insert Disturbing Content Here]. That movie is actually underrated compared to this. In fact, Twilight is underrated because it is hated so much. Heath's performance is fine, but it isn't Joker-like. Jack Nicholson made a better Joker. Christian Bale's growls are unbearable. The movie has a dull atmosphere and takes itself too seriously. Burton's Batman was dark, but it was fun. This is just kind of boring. The Dark Knight is a fine film, but the best superhero movie ever? That is just exaggerated. The best superhero movie is and will always be The Avengers.

12 Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope

It is sickening that this overrated pile of a series is treated as if it's the best thing ever made when it isn't. I think the only franchise that has received even more stupid, ridiculous hype is that stupid, overrated video series, Call of Duty. It wouldn't surprise me if much of the fandom of Star Wars and Call of Duty are the same. Both dumb franchises have war, a bunch of explosions, overrated weapons, overrated soldier characters, and they both get brought up too much in circumstances that have nothing to do with either series.

Both franchises are like cancer, which should also go away, but can't. Now that wouldn't mean that the fandom of both franchises is completely the same, since many Call of Duty fans mainly adore Call of Duty because it's very violent. Dumb costumes, overused catchphrases, an overrated theme song, and those reasons I mentioned earlier are why Star Wars is the most overrated movie series ever. At least the makers of Star Wars don't release an entry every single year.

13 Get Out

This movie has scenes that don't make any sense and are there because Peele wanted to show weirdness. But instead, it's just confusing.

You knew the surprising plot twist after 5 minutes. We've seen that story many times before.

14 Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars is the most overrated media franchise of all time. This includes video games, TV shows, animations, and films, and this comment is coming from a long-time fan. Honestly, I think there are better space-based franchises and better sequels than Episode V. I'm not saying this is bad. In fact, it's better than A New Hope. However, I honestly don't think it's as grand as so many people make it out to be.

Furthermore, the Star Wars franchise has staggered itself several times after the original trilogy. While I personally like the prequels, I know they're flawed in many ways. The sequel trilogy is honestly mediocre. And, in a very unpopular opinion, I prefer the tie-in materials, mostly from the Expanded Universe, over any of the films.

15 Jurassic World

This movie is mostly overhyped because of the series it is a part of. There are dinosaur movies on the Syfy channel that are marvelous compared to this piece of junk. If this film weren't part of the Jurassic Park series, nor had the word 'Jurassic' in its title, most fans of this movie wouldn't care for it.

This film should be called 'Jurassic Garbage.' 'Walking with Dinosaurs 3D' is better than this overrated piece of Jurassic Garbage. Many fans of this movie must be on dope.

16 The Blair Witch Project

I only see the horror at the end. The found-footage genre should be reevaluated. Yes, films like REC are good found-footage horrors, but this one is just bland. The ending could have benefitted from some red eyes and a demonic smile in the background, followed by a jump scare, and then static with screams in the background. It may be a bit cliché, but I find it acceptable.

It's so stupid! Found footage movies are the most annoying ever. They attempt to appear realistic when, in fact, they are the most stressful and hardest to watch. This movie is the worst.

17 Napoleon Dynamite

There's really no reason to like this movie. It's dull, bland, boring, and usually unfunny. I almost slept through this movie, something I don't do often in comedies! The characters are total idiots, the acting is terrible, the story is completely stupid, and the movie is filmed in the worst place possible. Any movie filmed in the country is boring in my experience! Anyway, don't watch this movie because it truly is overrated.

I cannot sit through this movie to save my life! It is the most boring and annoying movie. I can't stand this character. Every time he is on screen, I want to beat the hell out of him. The characters piss me off, and the story is absolutely horrible. Even the ending at the talent show is nothing amazing.

This movie is crap, plain and simple!

18 How to Train Your Dragon

Let's face it, the sequel is ripping off the first. They make you like only Toothless. That's why all the other dragons are ugly and fat.

Toothless is cute, but Shrek and especially Kung Fu Panda are better franchises by far.

This movie is just okay, but it is not the best movie I have ever seen nor the worst.

19 Paranormal Activity

All of these have such a slow build-up. The commercials always promise that "the last 15 minutes will scar you for life." It's true because I'm scarred for wasting my money.

I hate all of these movies. All of them.

Boring and full of horror movie clichés.

20 The Matrix

This movie is the most overrated in history, and I'm going to tell you why. Blade did the bullet dodging, marble pillars with armed men behind them, trench coats, and sunglasses one year before The Matrix. The acting in The Matrix is subpar, the plot is idiotic, and it tries so hard to be smart but isn't. However, I will give it this: the special effects are decent. Not great, but they stand the test of time. The best part of the whole movie was when Keanu Reeves does Bruce Lee's signature nose flick. The reason I say Keanu Reeves is because it was unscripted. So, I've listed out the reasons I dislike The Matrix. You can't dismiss me as unintelligent because I have my reasons.

21 Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This nearly destroyed the franchise.

A lot of problems with this movie have been overused. The main problem is not the worst thing this movie has done.

My issue with Rey's ability to wield a lightsaber successfully against Kylo Ren and use a mind trick after just hearing about the force is that these are the only things her character is there for. She has no real steady character development throughout the entire movie.

The "rehash of A New Hope argument," while valid, has two problems: 1) it's overused, and 2) it isn't nearly as much of a problem as the terrible writing and incoherent plot.

22 Avengers: Endgame

Get ready for my rant, I guess: Personally, I'm so sick of Marvel. I got so tired of hearing about this movie and, while I wasn't surprised, I was frustrated when I heard this movie was being put back in theaters. Why? Why, how, WHY was it three hours?! That's as long as The Hobbit, which is not good at all! I never found any Marvel movie I really enjoyed, except the first one, slightly. It gave me a migraine to know that this movie exists, watching the trailers, reading the comments, watching the reviews... I'm sorry, but this movie and the whole Marvel series needs to end. Remember, this is just my opinion, and I respect your opinion. Thank you.

23 Gravity

I have to heavily disagree with most critics on this one. Gravity is one of the most boring films I've ever seen, which is a real shame as I wanted to see what made this film so attention-grabbing.

Sandra Bullock honestly isn't that good. Most of the film consists of her thumping around in space while mumbling nonsense and screaming for life throughout the majority of the film's runtime. George Clooney could have provided more depth, but no, he's offed about halfway through anyway. I know these two are competent actors, which disappoints me even more.

24 Gladiator

I don't like calling things "overrated." So I will just say that I personally don't like this movie as much as most people. I've watched it three times and still don't get the hype. The story felt rushed and didn't draw me in. I couldn't get behind the narrative of the movie. Maximus is a bland character, which made it really hard to sympathize with him. And Russell Crowe has had better roles in his career. The only aspect that really stood out to me was Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus. It's a shame that Crowe got an Oscar for this movie, but he didn't. All in all, Gladiator is an enjoyable little action flick, but not the timeless classic it's made out to be.

25 Avengers: Infinity War

People didn't brag nearly as much about that Star Wars story, which is surprising since the film had the words 'Star Wars' in its title. Many fans of Star Wars would praise a film just for that reason. Perhaps a number of fans of that series are starting to come to their senses. Anyway, the third Avengers film received major pop star-level praise from its fans. Fans were treating the film as if it were their reason for living. It is officially the most overrated film of 2018. At least it's better than those Twilight films.
