Top Ten Most Powerful Cities In the World

The Top Ten
1 London London is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames in the south eastern part of the island of Great Britain, London has been a major settlement for two millennia.

The reason why London is the most powerful city in the world is that it has such a huge percentage of the power of the second most powerful country in the world which is itself a very distant second from the most powerful country in the world USA. If power was more evenly spread accross other UK cities London would be a distant third behind New York and Tokyo. The fact that such a large amount of Britains Comprehensive National Power is in the capital is a source of some indignation to the rest of the country as a whole.

With names like Trafalgar Square, Waterloo, Nelson's Column and HMS Belfast, London showcases it's historical power. Not to mention being the home of Queen Victoria who was the head of the largest empire ever known. Additionally, London defended itself against the overwelming forces of the Luftwaffe against all odds. In modern times it is arguably the banking and insurance capital of the world.

London, an amazing city to be in. Great city in terms of infrastructure, transportation, law and order, living, tourism, shopping and fashion. I have been to many countries and cities in the world, but I think, none can beat London. London has areas where people from different parts of the world, can have a feeling of being in their own country when they are in those places.

You can look at it from any angle you want, the angel of hate, beef and anger but the truth is London worth being the most powerful city. I have been to New York many times and I think the way the city is perceived is totally different from reality. It doesn't have the best infrastructure that fully support it being the most powerful city in the world. Unlike London.

2 New York

Umm, London's GDP is not nearly the size as New York's. And according to the "Global Financial Centres Index" New York ranks above Tokyo and London. Tokyo IS 6TH PLACE!

For more information about the index: "The Global Financial Centres Index is a ranking of the competitiveness of financial centres based on over 26,000 financial centre assessments from an online questionnaire together with over 80 indices from organisations such as the World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Economist Intelligence Unit. It is compiled and published twice a year by Z/Yen Group and sponsored by the Qatar Financial Centre Authority."

Just look it up instead of basing your opinions off of ignorant statements.

Is ranked #10 in terms of population
The seat of the largest financial institutions
The seat of the UN headquarters
The center of the arts, music and entertainment (Broadway, Julliard, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, etc.)
Largest sports teams and arenas (Knicks, Rangers, MSG)
Educational center (Columbia, NYU, etc.)
Largest public transit system in the world
The most powerful European and Asian companies all have want to hold claims in NYC.
The largest tech companies want to establish presence here.
City with the largest immigrant population. The statue of liberty draws immigrants from around the world. Everyone wants to move here.

Are you kidding me? New York's way more powerful than overrated and boring London. It's the melting pot, it's the financial capital of the world, it's home to the most famous and iconic landmarks EVER. What more can I say? Hmmm, well let's see. Aside from the influence, history, and beauty of the proud concrete jungle city, there's... Ahem.

Green cash flowing everywhere, along with the satisfying sounds of coins clicking and jingling along to the tune of Wall Street and other major financial corporations and banks dealing with millions and millions of transactions each day, while the beepings of the ATMs around the corner help maintain a robust, regal, and smooth-sailing financial and economical system, which keeps the engine running in the financial capital of the world, and is able to make daunting decisions and do perilous tasks around the country and throughout the world.

Now, I don't know about you, but it seems like those British crybabies and tea-sipping, ...more

After reading other polls it seems this one is a bit flawed. Every other poll stated that NYC is the most powerful city in the world. London isn't far behind and is most definitely in the same playing field, but NYC still tops most if not all lists. It's the most brilliant place to be and live, but only if you hustle and make it that way...otherwise better off heading elsewhere.

3 Tokyo Tokyo, officially Tokyo Metropolis, one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, has served as the Japanese capital since 1869. As of 2018, the Greater Tokyo Area ranked as the most populous metropolitan area in the world.

Tokyo is the world largest population city. It is very beautiful and clean city. I am indian but I love Tokyo. Tokyo is heart of Japan.

Tokyo is such a beautiful city, and it is so inspiring too, they're so nice and they have a lot of respect there. Go go Tokyo!

When I visit Tokyo I was surprised with everything in good way. Also I like their beautiful culture and heart.

Tokyo has the biggest population by a landslide and it is also by far the largest

R u mad this city has a big population and so much noise and the biggest worst the transport is tooo bad and old people are more crazier and they don't even understand a single English word I think this city is a full dustbin!

Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of Europe's major centres of finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, science, and the more.

Undeserved reputation for being bad for business and rude. Actually great economical and political centre. Amazing place to study, with schools among the best in the world. And beautiful, too.

Capital city, becoming the first place in Europe for high tech startups.
Most rich area, Paris and around, in Europe.
Europe in the 1st economical power in the whole world.

The city is clean and indeed a nice place to be

PSG! Paris is the best city and the most visited

6 Beijing

It definitely will be the new center of the world which is replace the new York city! if you haven't been to there yet, you must check it out!

Beijing is the heart of asia

The place where all the magic happens.

On its way to overtake New York as the most powerful city on Earth

It's a very great city. I would love to go there

7 Washington DC

I live here. So I might be partial. I'm not from here. But not only is it the political capital of the most economically powerful and culturally influential nation in the world, it is also incredibly diverse here with people wanting to move here from all over the world. I don't know how to measure metropolitan wealth internationally, but domestically it's the richest region in the United States. It's a burgeoning region of booming economic sectors such as finance, and outside of San Jose, it's arguably the second-largest technology corridor in the world. It's also one of the most highly-educated areas in the world as well, with a significant population here of people who have a college educated background. So it's really a sought out city for the intellectual nerd crowd. Every nation has a presence here via embassies. We're second in the world behind Brussels in number of embassies. We also have the headquarters of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. I believe the UN ...more

New York may have money. Same with LA. Other cities like London have more people as well. But D.C. Is the most powerful. Could easily eliminate an entire nation with the military they control. No contest. Live in D.C. Like I do and you will laugh at others when they try to tell you what proximity to power is like.

The decisions made involving the world's largest military (aka most powerful) are in Washington DC (sorry New York). Largest population doesn't mean most powerful. DC has the power to shape the world more than any other place on earth.

I deliberately voted DC so that I know you'll read it (you're arrogant like that). When you consider the size of DC to London, it makes Londom more powerful - take it as science and leave it at that.

8 Berlin

Berlin is no doubt the absolute most powerful city on the globe. Germany and China hold up the world's economical system and without these two countries money would be hyper inflated and the progress of the abundance of goods would be reverted to the 1600's. Deutschland ist uber alles in der Welt!
Gehe Deutschland!

Everyone thinks they are stupid because of Hitler but Germans are very nice people! I lived in Berlin for 12 years and I can tell you that!

Leads the EU market, and is saving it from falling and letting commies and Nazis coming back

Economically wiser than everyone else. Lost 2 World Wars and is still the most powerful EU country.

9 Mumbai

Not the most powerful city on earth, but it deserves to be higher up. 41 billionaires make this city the 6th on forbes' list, they can't all be wrong for flocking here... this is an incredible number for a poor country. It's not like the city is much more populated, it is not proportional to India, so its high GDP and presence of super rich cannot be dismissed like that. Situated exactly between the west and the east, it is neither east asian (Chinese etc) nor European. A former second city of the British Empire, it has retained its global appeal. After Hong Kong and London, it is the most influential city in the English speaking world outside of America.

Mumbai the financial capital of India... Home to India's some of the tallest and magnificent towers... British architecture best... MUMBAI rocks...

Financial capital, entertainment center, home to most of the billionaires, skyscrapers what more is required for it to be a global power in itself.

Lots of love to Mumbai... This comes in 9th position in the most powerful cities list and comes 1st in worst cities in the world. Very bad.

10 Moscow

Moscow is the Finance, political, economic Center of Russia. It is a monopol in its own country and controls it to 100 percent, during other large countries have a lot of great cities, Moscow is the special one in Russia, so it is today a single centre in a very large nation and is caused of this the worlds most powerful city.

Moscow has given Russia a boosting economy. it is the polital, and economical city of Russia and deserves a higher ranking than... ten. Moscow is the number 1 most powerful city in the world. But why is it so low? Because half the world hates Russia just because they are so damn powerful. So stop hating. Win this for Mother Russia!

Why does everyone hate Russia? Moscow should get a much higher ranking. Russia does not have a lot of major cities so pretty much everything happens in Moscow. And if you think about it Russia is strong so Moscow must be a powerful city.

Moscow blows, courtesy of the dictator Putin. still bitter about the fall of communism. nothing comes out good of communism... Ask N. Korea, Cuba and a handful of 3rd would nations in Africa, all poor, full of crime and death! Russia, get your act together and loose that dictator you have. the sooner the better.

The Contenders
11 Shanghai Shanghai is one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of the central government of the People's Republic of China, the largest city in China by population, and the second most populous city proper in the world, with a population of 24.18 million as of 2017. It is a global financial more.

Why isn't Shanghai on this list? That's crazy! Look up some pictures on Google Images!

Shanghai is already in top5 today, it's close to 2019 now.

Shanghai should be in the list. At least Top 10

Change the rank of Beiging and Shanghai! That'll make sense.

12 Seoul Seoul – officially the Seoul Special City – is the capital and largest metropolis of the Republic of Korea, forming the heart of the Seoul Capital Area, which includes the surrounding Incheon metropolis and Gyeonggi province, the world's 14th largest city and second largest metropolitan area.

While Japan went on its bubble popping, Seoul had to take some of the works Tokyo had to deal with, in means of Industry. Seoul is a very fast city; which here I mean, everything goes fast. Korea's GNP in 1953 was 67$ after a destructive war between communism and capitalism, and in 2007, Korea's GNP became 21655$, making Korea one of the 20 major power on Earth. Seoul was the Engine for all of these; Samsung Headquarters (if Samsung itself becomes an independent nation, it will become one of the top 30 major economy. What! ), SK Labs, LG headquarters, Gangnam and some of the greatest elite education centers are located in Seoul. Seoul has an access to world's best airport, the Incheon Airport, and has a rich history which dates back to because 4000 in prehistory, and was a major city since because 5. The remains of Baekjae, Goryeo, Joseon are still alive, with ancient temples and palaces, old city gates and walls.

Seoul is not politically powerful, but economically powerful. This city ranked in 3rd for population and 4th for economy.

Seoul is very powerful. There are so many good people. Not only seoul but also many cities in Korea, are very powerful.

1/4 of the population in the Republic of Korea live in Seoul. Hey, McDonalds and Burger King deliver...

Very important financially, the world is dominated by money

I love Hong Kong

15 Rio De Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, or simply Rio, is anchor to the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area and the second-most populous municipality in Brazil and the sixth-most populous in the Americas.

The most beautiful city in the world!

16 Kolkata

Kolkata is one of the most powerful cities in every area.

It is one of the best cities in India

Kolkata is very Best city of India and very pawarfull city

17 Istanbul Istanbul, formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, is the most populous city in Turkey and the country's economic, cultural and historic center.

A 14 million population city, with a 25 million population state! And the 2nd biggest city in Europe and the head of over history cultures and it's the city of all times! And as napoleon said : if the world is one state Istanbul will be it's capital. Also it's the only city in the world where the past and present and future meet! So it should be in top 5!

Even this is not debatable, Istanbul is the most important city of all times since it has established.

Amazing city, cultural city but its 20th place really

Most powerful city in the heart of the world.

18 Kiev

Sexy city. The future world sees Kiev as the most powerful city. This statement is made by an indian anthropologist...

Big city, bridge between Europe and Asia..

Why is it here? ITs fullo boring

19 Rome

Rome was a powerful city maybe 2000 years ago according to mythology and only in Europe if we compare to other Asian Empires.
But today Rome does not deserve to be in that list or at the end of it.

And that will not improve in the future due to lack of budget, lack of vision, lack of modernity from the part of government and Italian themselves, who rely on their ruins.

They are just surviving because of an aggressive market based on lies.

They will never reach one normal American city even much smaller.

Despite what others may think of Rome in the modern era, that doesn't change the fact that the Vatican's Pope still influences and leads the world's largest religion. If we are focusing on modern tech, then Rome is low tier, but if we focus on influence and power, then the Pope is powerful enough to keep Rome near the top, regardless of the political state of Italy.

Rome should be first because it’s always been the most powerful. Every city in the world has had at least some influence from Rome.

Rome? Really, we have never seen such old fashioned city, will be never powerful, neither other city in Italy.
Trying to make business there in High-tech, is not impossible but needs to be done knowing the lazy aspect of Italians and their wrong approach of the surrounded world, they don't appreciate as too much proud of them.

20 Singapore
21 Chicago Chicago, officially the City of Chicago, is the third-most populous city in the United States. With over 2.7 million residents, it is also the most populous city in both the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States. Chicago is considered one of the most important business centers in the world. more.

The economic capital of the Midwest!

It is pretty much all of Illinois lol

23 Vatican City Vatican City, officially Vatican City State or the State of Vatican City, is a walled enclave within the city of Rome. It is the smallest nation on Earth, and is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.
24 Pyongyang Pyongyang or P'yŏngyang (평양시) is the capital and largest city of North Korea, or the Democratic People’s Republic Of Korea.

Just because North Korea is bad and all doesn't mean it shouldn't be on this list. This city is powerful, and the same can be said for North Korea. I am aware it's not the most powerful city, however. - SoongeBill

Great people, a great leader who has fed the population of this great vast country and will lead us to victory against the American oppression. That's why this is the best city in the world

No North Korea is terrible and Jim joung in is barbecued he kills his family members and his people if they don't like him it shouldn't be on this list! But Pyongyang probably wouldn't be that bad without kim Jung un!

It is the best and powerful city in the world that I have ever seen.

25 Toronto Toronto is the most populous city in Canada, the provincial capital of Ontario, and the centre of the Greater Toronto Area, the most populous metropolitan area in Canada.

Many consider the Big T as one of the major economic powerhouses of both the Americas. It is in fact (2014) the fourth most powerful city in North America after NY, LA and Mexico City. Almost a third of Canada's population hail from or inhabit Toronto. What seems to make this huge mighty Canadian city look superior and powerful is also its vast impressive skyline and is one of the best in the world with CN Tower and when seen at night from Lake Ontario.

Many would consider the Big T as one of the major economic powerhouses of North America. In fact (2014) it is the 4th most powerful city in America after NY, LA and Mexico City. Almost a third of Canadians live in this massive city. Its also packed with skyscrapers, and boasts one of the most impressive looking skylines in the world in CN Tower thus equalling the superiority, greatness and power of the city.

Toronto has built many new highrise buildings more than any other city in the world and still has planned to build many more in the future. I believe Toronto will be one of 5 top global cities in the world in 20 years.

It should be #1 I love the nice people and the big list of things you can do here.. You will never get board
