He did not play roles. He became them. He was entirely insane, and I don't mean weird or egotostic, I mean insane as in dangerously insane. Apparantly, on the set of "Fitzcarraldo" he shot at co-workers and shot off the tip one of their fingers. Just to name one of the things he did. Why do I bring that up? Because his personality comes through in almost each of his perfornances and often the role and his own personality blend together. His roles are gripping experiences that make you shiver because you can never predict what will happen. Often, he improvised or even ignored the director, because when he had a vision of how to portray a character, he did it that way. No matter what the director said. In the European 60s to 80s, that was possible because movies were considered art rather than media. He sure was a terrible person and maybe he would have belonged in an asylum, but you never find any other actor with more intense performances.
