Movie Review - IT (2017)

MegaSoulhero IT (2017) is an adaptation of the Stephen King novel and a remake of the 1990 film. Although technically the 1990 film wasn't really a film but a mini series that aired on television. And it sucked. Yeah, I did not enjoy the IT mini series. It was very cheesy and poorly written. The only saving grace was Tim Curry as Pennywise! Because he definitely looked like he was having a lot of fun with his role! I kind of had low expectations for the new IT movie. Mainly because the trailers looked pretty bad and I'm not much of a horror movie fan. I consider horror to be my least favorite movie genre. But I'm gonna tell you right now, IT is phenomenal!

In this movie, a bunch of kids in town are mysteriously disappearing. And this group of kids discovers it's because of a shape-shifting entity that takes the form of a clown. So the kids work together to find it and kill it in what is a very fun and entertaining experience! But it's not flawless. And I will tell you why. First of all, the effects are AWFUL!!! And I mean, WOW they're bad! It's some of the worst visual effects I've seen this year! I actually laughed at how bad they were! There's this one part where Pennywise comes out of a photographic slide and the CGI in that scene was so bad! It was supposed to be scary but I couldn't help but laugh! I even heard some other people in the theater laughing! And there are these other CGI moments that don't look very convincing. Although, some of them can be pretty scary. Mostly in design. But the thing that makes the scary scenes seems convincing is the performances of the actors! Every actor in this movie is really good! Especially the kids! Normally child actors don't give very convincing performances, but these ones do!

It actually felt like these characters were in danger! The intensity feels very real! These are the best kid actors I've seen since Stranger Things! In fact, one of the kids from Stranger Things is in the movie! And he was amazing in it! Not only was his character very likeable, he was very funny! Definitely my favorite character! I also really enjoyed the female character, Beverly. I don't know the actress's name but she does an outstanding job! I also loved the character interactions! The characters and their friendship are developed very well! It's too bad Beverly didn't have sex with them like in the book. There's a bully character in the movie and I honestly thought he was the scariest thing about the movie. He was so over the top and acted like a psychopath! He threatened one of the kids with fire, cut him in the stomach with a knife, and threw rocks at the kids! I've never seen bullies act like this in real life. You can tell that the actor was really into it! And now let me talk about Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise. BRILLIANT! In the original 1990 mini-series, Tim Curry's Pennywise was mostly comedic. But Bill Skarsgård's performance is more creepy while also being a little comedic at times. He was actually pretty frightening at times.

Something I wanna point out is that I don't really like jump scares. I think they are a very lazy and cheap way of scaring someone. And half the time, jump scares aren't even really scary! They're mostly just done to surprise you! There's a huge difference between scaring someone and startling someone! And this movie has quite a lot of them! Some of them are pretty good and some of them aren't. A few of them are just loud unexpected music which isn't really scary. I've always hated those types of jump scares! But the ones I like are really great! There are moments when you can kind of predict that a jump scare is gonna happen, but you don't know when it's gonna happen. Which makes the scenes more intense. You're just waiting for something to happen but you don't know when it's coming. The movie doesn't just rely on jump scares. Since the movie is rated R, there's also some gore involved. And I can certainly tell you it looks a lot more realistic than any of the gore in Death Note! As for the humor, I was kind of mixed on it. There are moments when I laughed but there were moments that I didn't really find funny. Some of the humor comes from the kids swearing. It was cute the first few times, but it got old real fast. This movie certainly has flaws, but the good stuff definitely outweighs the bad stuff!

IT is a thrilling and entertaining experience! I wouldn't exactly say it's scary, but it's definitely intense! Unlike a certain movie I watched recently by the name of Escape From Tomorrow which I will review on October 1st! If you are a fan of horror movies, go see IT! Even if you're not a fan, you might still like it like I did! Despite the terrible effects and lackluster humor, I had a lot of fun watching this! I LOVED IT!!!
