Top Ten Movies About Alternate Reality

The theory of there being alternate realities has always been pondered over, and scientists actually think that it is highly possible. Some great movies have sprung from this theory, and I'll list them here.
The Top Ten
1 Groundhog Day Groundhog Day Product Image

This classic, hilarious, movie starring Bill Murray is one that practically everyone's seen. Bill Murray, a weatherman, is stuck living the same day over and over again (groundhog day). It's not my favourite on the list by any means but I did decide to put it in first.
Edit: I just realized that I released this list on groundhog day! Fitting!

I like that you released this list on Groundhog day, nice touch! Also this movie is amazing, very fun to watch.

This was a hilarious Bill Murray movie. I find it hasn't aged particularly well, but it is pretty good.

I don't know if I would count this as an alternate reality. Still a great movie.

2 Inception Inception Product Image

Inception is a movie in which a thief steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing tech and a variety of other methods of persuasion. The thief is given the job of a lifetime: Plant the idea in the mind of a CEO to split up his ailing father's empire. Anyways, through this use of dream-sharing tech they go into an alternate reality of sorts where time is at a much different pace, their thoughts are vulnerable to theft, and where you can cheat architecture into impossible shapes, among many other things. The dream world(s), (depending on how many dreams within dreams there are), is, in effect, another reality, so this definitely counts. It is easily the greatest masterpiece of a movie ever created, but again the dream reality isn't a complete alternate reality, so I decided to not put it higher than 3rd.

This is my favourite movie ever. I think that it should be higher than 3rd, though I've never seen Donnie Darko

Inception is one of the best movies ever period.

3 The Matrix The Matrix Product Image

There is some controversy over whether the Matrix counts as an alternate reality or not, but I personally think that it does. The Matrix is a reality, whether real or not, where people exist and do their daily business, so it definitely counts. I found that all the anticipation leading up to me finally watching the movie actually made it a little disappointing, but it was pretty good, so I'll put it here.

The Matrix is so good.

4 Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Product Image

This is a very creepy movie, in which a troubled teenager, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes. What's going on in this movie has always been a confusing discussion, but Donnie is led on a journey based in alternate reality, and this stellar yet creepy movie definitely deserves to be high on this list

5 Shutter Island Shutter Island Product Image

It's a film where Marshal Teddy, who is acted by Leonardo DiCaprio along with another marshal, (Mark Ruffalo) travels to an island where a mental hospital is located, and they must find a missing patient. The strange events that take place there are inexplicable, combined with horror and psychological pressure, and as the film progresses, we get lost in the plot, questioning whether everyone else is mentally ill and Teddy is the marshal, or if Teddy has some mental issues himself. After 'finding' the missing patient, the plot changes and it may even seem that it lost the point. The main character is plagued by nightmares and hallucinations, which are followed by flashbacks to his tragic past. This is a film that has an ending that will question everything and make the plot turn upside down.

This one was so confusing. I still don't really understand it, but it continues to show us that DiCaprio is an amazing actor

6 Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse Product Image

Many people speculate that the entirety of this movie took place in an alternate reality, because some of the stuff in this reality is a bit different from our own, and Miles Morales is much different from "our" spider man. Whether this theory is true or not, it's definitely true that there is the "multiverse" theory in this, from where the "spider-men" spawn from, so I think it definitely counts, right? (I actually originally wrote "eh?" there, which is probably not helping my "anti-canadian stereotypes" campaign so let's keep that quiet, okay?)

7 Back to the Future Part II Back to the Future Part II Product Image

This movie was all about alternate reality, at least after they changed the past by going to the future.

8 Big Fish Big Fish Product Image
9 X-Men: Days of Future Past X-Men: Days of Future Past Product Image
10 The Matrix Reloaded The Matrix Reloaded Product Image

Much like the matrix, except there was a noticeable decrease in depth to this movie and quality. It was still good, by all means, but not amazing.

The Contenders
11 The Fountain The Fountain Product Image
12 Doctor Strange Doctor Strange Product Image
13 Tenet Tenet Product Image

Tenet is one of the most confusing films ever, but it seems to be that it takes place in an alternate reality where everything is going backwards in time. Doesn't make sense to you? Good. It shouldn't.
