Top 10 Movies that Most Deserve a Harsher MPAA Rating

The Top Ten

1 Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Rated PG)

@Extractinator: I am only hypothetical here. A re-rating of a movie to achieve a harsher rating won't happen anyway. I am just saying that the current ratings these movies hold are a bit too liberal, mostly for violence, as sex and language is handled way too harsh anyway. Therefore it doesn't matter if there was a PG-13 back then. Nowadays it deserves one, because the listed movies fron that time have their moments but not nearly enough to rate it R, which should only be awarded for movies most young teens couldn't handle. I don't personally like the NC-17. But it's not my cup of tea, as I am not an American and shouldn't criticize their rating system. The movies I added have a content that usually movies with a harsher rating have, that's basically all there is to it.

Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for comic violence and some sexual innuendo

2 The Grudge (Rated PG-13)

The jaw scene is pure R-rated content. The Japanese movie this is based on is rated R and has not a single moment with such gruesome images.

Suggested rating: rated R for disturbing images and gore

3 The Uninvited (Rated PG-13)

Suggested rating: R for disturbing images and some violent content

4 The Haunting (1963) (Rated G)

Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for scary content throughout

5 Raiders of the Lost Ark (Rated PG)

Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for some fantasy violence

6 Taken (Rated PG-13)

Suggested rating: rated R for violence and torture

Suggested rating: R for some violence

7 Poltergeist (1982) (Rated PG)

Spielberg and the director actually wanted this movie to be rated PG. I seriously don't know what was going on in their small, insane heads cause this film has a very gory scene of a man's face being peeled off.

Definitely should be rated R

Suggested rating: rated R for scary content, disturbing images and a scene of strong violence and gore

8 The Gremlins (Rated PG)

This movie, along with Temple of Doom, LED to there being a PG-13, and needs to be rerated to that.

Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for some fantasy violence

9 Forrest Gump (Rated PG-13)

What's wrong with this movie?

Obviously needs rating R

10 The Passion of the Christ (Rated R)

Not exactly a fan of strict ratings such as the NC-17 in the US or the 18 in Germany. Ultimately, it shoukd be up to your parents what they think their kids can handle. And usually, I'd say that teens 16 and up can handle almost anything (16 is also the highest possible rating in Austrian cinema)

Suggested rating: rated NC-17 for extreme violence throughout.

it probably got the lower rating due to the religious value

This film is the only R rated film my parents let me see since my family is Christian and they want me to learn more about Jesus
Deserved to be rated NC-17šŸ˜ØšŸ˜°šŸ˜±

The Contenders

11 Howard the Duck (Rated PG)

Suggested rating: rated R for sexual themes.

Should be rated R for showing duck breasts.

12 Watership Down (Rated PG)

Should be bumped up to PG-13 for thematic material and violence involving disturbing and bloody images.

Suggested rating: rated R for strong violence and gore.

13 Sixteen Candles (Rated PG)

There's a scene where a woman's bare-naked nipples are exposed in the shower. This film definitely deserves an R rating.

R for language, nudity, and crude content

14 The Hate U Give (Rated Pg-13)

Suggested rating: r because star's friend gets shot and killed.

it's really only PG-13 for the educational value and stuff.

15 2001: A Space Odyssey (Rated G)

Suggested rating: rated PG-13 for some disturbing images including a scene of violence

16 The Lion King (G)

Should be bumped up to PG for thematic material, including an on-screen (but non graphic) death scene, and some (again non-graphic) violence.

Suggested rating: PG or even PG-13 for violence and tragic scenery.

17 Jaws (Rated PG)

This should be rated R for intense violence, blood, and gore.

Should be rerated to PG-13

18 The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Rated G)

Suggested rating: PG

19 The Adventures of Mark Twain (Rated G)

Yeah, this one should have a PG-13 for some intense scares. I mean the main villain is Satan himself!

20 Drag Me to Hell (Rated Pg-13)

It's really hard to believe that this over the top gorefest with a scene quite resembling emetophilia got a PG-13 rating. It should be re-rated R.

Iā€™m honestly surprised this one had a PG-13 label.

21 Alice in Wonderland (2010) (Rated PG)

Yeah, it had an eye cut out scene! What was Tim Burton thinking?!

22 Cars 2 (Rated G)

PG for Some Action and Mild Peril

23 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Rated PG)

Suggested rating: PG-13 due to violence.

24 Top Gun (Rated PG)

Middle fingers everywhere, lots of profanity, a sex scene although brief and hardly anything shown, the death of Goose. PG-13 at least.

25 Akira (Rated R)

This film has gotta be the most violent movie I've ever seen (whether animated or not). Tetsuo's transformation scene honestly makes the crucifixion of Jesus in Passion of the Christ look less gory by comparison (not sure how any Christians would react to that. I'm not trying to offend by the way).

How this film was able to get away with an R rating is beyond me. So yeah, this should re-rated NC-17 for extreme gore and violence.

This film is rated R
