Top 10 Movies with the Most Inaccurate Ratings from the MPAA

The Top Ten

1 2001: A Space Odyssey

I think PG would be better for this movie. - zxm

Okay, I get it. A 2-hour space adventure is rated G yet teenagers getting brutally tortured (Salo) is rated NR and a man marrying an underage daughter (Lolita) is rated NR. At this rate, this movie should be rated NR though by today's standards I might suggest PG or PG-13 - jack2244

2 Lolita

So this is NR yet 2001: A Space Odyssey is G? How can a movie about a space adventure be rated G yet a movie about a guy marrying an underage daughter be NR? Well, MPAA seriously didn't know what went through their heads. Add on that Spartacus was rated PG-13 yet this is still rated NR. - jack2244

3 Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom

Really? This is NR. CHANGE THIS RATING TO NC-17 RIGHT NOW. I rightfully regret watching this movie (I saw it 20 something years ago) and I can tell you to avoid a brutal disaster piece like this. It needs an NC-17 if not an X - jack2244

4 The Exorcist

This movie should be rated X instead of R. I am not a big fan of this movie like most people are. It is extremely overrated and the woman's look is extremely vomit-inducing. This is why I hate horror, saw this on mistake when I was young. Even Roger Ebert suggested an X rating. - jack2244

5 Robocop

I'm going to be honest here, the strong brutality in this action film could probably reach an X level in my opinion. No, I'm no MPAA source but I could give you any time what film rating I think could possibly fit certain movies any time. I would think it would be nice to work as an MPAA source though (laugh out loud) - jack2244

6 Spartacus

By today's standards, I'm indifferent between whether this could reach a PG level or a PG-13 level. However, it is factually ridiculous this got a PG-13 level for a 1960 movie. Yes, I am aware that it was on a violent level for that year, but it's Stanley Kubrick, do you expect it to be kid-friendly? - jack2244

7 Stephen King's It

Brutally honest, I would at least rate this PG-13. This movie is not suitable for NR. It is based off a Stephen King novel about Pennywise the Dancing Clown, portrayed by Tim Curry. Pennywise is a character I admire though. - jack2244

8 Terminator Salvation

Alright, by some standards, the PG-13 rating is appropriate but I could argue this could reach a level between PG-13 or like the former Terminator movies: The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, this could reach an R-level for the lame action - jack2244

9 The Passion of the Christ

I can argue that the crucifixion scene and the 10-minute whipping scene could make this reach an NC-17 level. An NC-17 level. That is not a joke. This movie is good but is just brutal and disturbing. - jack2244

10 Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Contenders

11 Requiem For a Dream

The excessive drug content and sexual scenes might just cause this movie to reach an NC-17 level as well. It is extremely disturbing but is considered well-crafted by some - jack2244

12 Poltergeist

This movie literally has a guy's face being peeled off. This should've been rated R.

13 Jaws
14 Sixteen Candles
15 The Grudge
16 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
17 Inside Out (2015)
18 Frozen
19 The Hunchback of Notre Dame
20 The Lion King

Should've been rated PG or higher. Easily the darkest and edgiest piece of filth in the Disney animated canon.
