This list is based on information from interviews - mostly with Hansi but not only with him.

1 Queen Queen are an English rock band formed in London in 1970. The original lineup was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals), and John Deacon (bass guitar, vocals). Before forming into Queen, Brian May and Roger Taylor had played together in a band named Smile. Freddie Mercury was a fan of Smile and encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate stage and recording techniques. He then joined the band in 1970, suggested "Queen" as a new band name, and adopted his familiar stage name. John Deacon was also recruited to complete the line-up. ...read more.

Queen influence appeared in the 90s - mostly Freddie's multi-layered vocals technique of overdubbing. Multi-layered vocal harmonies, creating a huge choir effect, became one of the most recognizable Blind Guardian features.

2 Testament Testament is an American thrash metal band from Berkeley, California. Formed in 1983 under the name Legacy, the band consists of vocalist Chuck Billy, guitarists Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick, bassist Steve DiGiorgio and drummer Gene Hoglan.

As you can see Blind Guardian were mostly influenced by: progressive metal and progressive rock bands, thrash metal bands, Queen and Deep Purple.

No surprise Blind Guardian stuff is pretty thrashy, especially in the 80s and 90s, but even to this day Blind Guardian sound much heavier than the other power metal bands.

7 Deep Purple Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although their musical approach changed over the years. Ian Gillan influenced Hansi vocal style, mostly his screaming technique. Hansi points out 2 singers as his biggest inspiration: Ian Gillan and Freddie Mercury.

8 Genesis Genesis are an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey in 1967. The most commercially successful and long-lasting line-up includes keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins.

Blind Guardian said only the early Genesis that was more progressive.

9 Robert Jordan James Oliver Rigney Jr. (1948-2007), better known by his pen name Robert Jordan, was an American author known for writing the epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time. He was also known for writing stories about Conan the Barbarian, and for writing other books with different pseudonyms. He died from cardiac amyloidosis in 2007 before he could finish the whole Wheel of Time series. Fortunately, author and long-time Wheel of Time fan Brandon Sanderson was able to finish and publish the last three books in the series.

One of Blind Guardian's most epic songs is named Wheel of Time and is based on the series. There are many references in other songs, for example - Ride Into Obsession.

Blind Guardian's first 3 albums (speed metal) were partly inspired by Helloween's debut album Walls Of Jericho.
Also, Kai Hansen of Helloween and Gamma Ray had guest appearances on all first 4 Blind Guardian albums either as a singer or guitarist. However, Hansi said that Helloween with Kiske and Deris had no any influence on Blind Guardian.
