These artists are either sellouts or simply like to experiment with genres. A sellout is someone like Gwen Stefani, who gives up a less popular genre to be more mainstream. A person who likes to expirement with genres is Billy Joe Armstrong, he tried doing metal with Brain Stew. It can be a drummer, singer, guitarist, bassist or whatever, as long as they are considered music artists.
