Top 10 Music Genres that are Considered Metal but are Not

The Top Ten
1 Metalcore

When I see "core" and "grind" in the genre name I expect to hear more punk than metal. Which is exactly what happens. In some songs from these "metal" subgenres there's no metal at all.
Metalcore is "core" (i.e. punk) influenced by metal. Some metalcore bands have more metal than others but still not enough to me.

Personally I consider it metal, but yeah. Its somewhat of a blend of extreme metal genres and harcore punk.

2 Pornogrind

1) it's not a music genre, 2) it's not metal. Pornogrind (aka porngrind or pornogore) is actually goregrind/ grindcore with specific lyrics. Grindcore is a combination of hardcore punk, crust punk, thrash metal, industrial and noise rock. To remind you, thrash metal is already mixed with punk. So how much is metal in this?

Lyrics aren't typical for metal - metal bands avoid lyrics about sex let alone porn. Metal bands even avoid love songs. Pornogrind is far from the spirit of metal and even from metal music.

This is musical abomination.

3 Nu Metal

@zxm, RE The Metal Archives credibility - I also have disagreements with them about several bands but they are still accurate in 99% of the cases. Wiki are accurate only in 1% of the cases when it comes to metal. Yes, nothing is perfect but for now Encyclopaedia Metallum is the most credible source of metal information.

@Metal_Treasure, metallum is great. also very helpful. I have an account there. I just don't like the way they treat users. But I prefer YouTube guitarists more. They don't say which band is metal and which isn't. But they practically explain the guitar riffs and solos. after seeing those it becomes so much easy to know which band is metal and which isn't.

I like nu metal, but I can see why most don't consider it as actual metal. Honestly there seems to be a bit more punk or hard rock sound to it.

@christangrant, yes. I know Def Leppard was a part of NWOBHM. But according to this Queen also should be there. Because they too had heavy albums in their first era.

4 Screamo

Nowhere near metal. It's a punk subgenre (it's a version of emo, which is also punk-based).

Musical abhorrence.

5 Deathcore

Again, it's more punk than metal. This is "core" (i.e. punk) influenced by death metal. Hardcore punk and metalcore elements are most present. Vocals can be different - pig squeals, shrieked screams and sometimes - growls. The metal subgenre with death growls is called death metal and not deathcore.

6 Crunkcore Crunkcore (also known as crunk punk and scrunk) is a musical fusion genre characterized by the combination of musical elements from crunk, post-hardcore, heavy metal, pop, electronic and dance music. The genre often features screamed vocals, hip hop beats, and sexually provocative lyrics. The genre developed from members of the scene subculture during the mid 2000s.

Agree, even its name speaks punk and NOT metal. "Crunkcore (also called crunk punk, screamo crunk, crunk rock, and scrunk) is a musical genre that combines crunk with the vocal style of screamo." And screamo is also punk-based and not metal-based.

7 Christian Metal

It's the opposite of satanic metal. Basically same music, but have different lyrics. In this case, there would be thousands of metal genres. Like love metal, life metal, depressing metal, sad metal, exciting metal etc. Each genre is different from other based on the instrumental differences.

Christian Metal isn't really a music genre, it's just a group of metal bands that have Christian lyrics. But these bands can play any metal subgenre - from thrash to power and death metal. There are Christian death metal bands.

8 Goregrind
9 Glam Metal Glam metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that features pop-influenced hooks and guitar riffs, and upbeat rock anthems.

I agree with Dio and zxm in that glam metal killed the metal image and gave metal a bad name. Glam metal didn't kill metal literally because metal is still pretty much alive 30 years later. Glam metal bands are good hard rock bands and not metal bands. Metal musicians hated glam "metal". Dave Mustaine said "GLAM stands for Gay Los Angeles Metal".

@Metal_Treasure, I meant glam metal made metal look bad. why does a guy really has to cover his face with nonsense makeup to play metal music? Its totally needless. Dio also said that they just wanted to attract girls. They had nothing other than this. Other then, metal is pretty much alive.

Glam Metal is actually a pop version of hard rock (music-wise and lyrics-wise). Glam metal was a gimmick used in the 80s by the new media - MTV. MTV is a tele-VISION, hence its focus on the looks.
I like some of these songs - they are good hard rock/power pop songs. Just don't call them metal.

Some glam metal do have some metal in them, but bands like Bon Jovi are not even close to metal. Those kind of bands just be called pop rock or hard rock.

10 Rap Metal

Rage Against the Machine is awesome, but they seem more rap-hard rock than actual metal.

It's more correct to say metal rap because to me it's still rap and not metal.

The Contenders
11 Satanic Metal

Satanic metal isn't metal. In fact its not even a genre. Any genre could be satanic if it has satanic lyrics. But some call black metal satanic metal. While black metal and satanic metal are two different things.

There's no such subgenre. Such music genre is not even possible - music itself can't be satanic, only lyrics can. And hypothetically, you can put satanic lyrics into every song - even pop.

Isn't this black metal?
