Top 10 Music Genres That Aren't For Everyone

Music like any form of art is purely subjective. There's nothing objective to it music tastes differ from person to person. These are some genres that some people might not like and others do. Ultimately it comes down to taste and preferences. And if you do like these genres that's perfectly fine. Same if you hate them as well.

The Top Ten

1 Black Metal Black Metal

Exactly. I'm Christian, I am a fan of metal, and I don't listen to black metal. - LightningStrike

While I don't like Black Metal in general for a number of reasons, there are bands like Behemoth and Emperor that manage to stand out and actually be adequate for the genre that they represent.

However, because the "Metal is Satanic" stereotype stems from events based on the Second-Wave Black Metal movement, and the inaccessibility of the genre's sound, its easy to see why people are easily turned off. - CrimsonShark

Behemoth are blackened death metal, meaning that music is mostly death metal while lyrics are mostly black metal. - Metal_Treasure

It isn't true that Black Metal is "The only Metal Sub Genre next to Drone Metal that is experimental."
If anything, currently Death Metal is the most experimenting - technical death metal and prog death metal, in particular. - Metal_Treasure

The only Metal Sub Genre next to Drone Metal that is experimental. But again some people might not like due to it's lyrical themes and I'm one of those people but it's not going to make me hate you as a person if you do like Black Metal.

2 Death Metal Death Metal

The one genre concerned parents tend to get worked up by :P...

Death Metal has its gems and there is some genuine praise that can be given to it in the instrumental sense. Its reputation has slightly improved over the years thanks to expansion and experimentation, but it still remains a genre that gets a lot of negative feedback from general audiences. That, and some bands like Cannibal Corpse contributed to some negative stereotypes doesn't help too much either. - CrimsonShark

The name alone probably makes some people uninterested and admittedly the music can be intense but that's the point. I'm personally not into but I'll try to tone down my hatred with the genre as a whole.

None of these genres are for everyone, otherwise, everyone would love them all! - Britgirl

I agree with Britgirl that there's no music genre loved by everyone. - Metal_Treasure

Not for everyone and it wasn't meant to be for everyone. Metal in general wasn't meant to be for everyone. - Metal_Treasure

3 Doom Metal Doom Metal

It's kind of depressing and slow and to some people that might not be interesting.

4 Grindcore Grindcore

TOTALLY THIS ONE - LightningStrike

The most abrasive and challenging of the "core" genres. It took some time to get into but now it's one of favorite genres to listen to. Intense raw anger in music form that I enjoy when I'm feeling crappy - cjWriter1997

Although no genre is truly for everyone, grindcore may as well be the most hated non-mainstream genre.

Its just too much for me, and I'm a metalcore fan - RustyNail

5 Teen Pop Teen Pop

Exactly this one in my personal thoughts. - LightningStrike

If you're not in high school anymore, the genre will not appeal to you at all. However, even when I was in high school I did not like it, because it's simply to cheesy for me.

If you aren't a teen anymore, obviously that's not for you. - Metal_Treasure

To the haters: for a month you must listen to only Justin Bieber and boy bands from New Kids on The Block to One Direction.

You can't force anyone to listen to music they don't want to listen to. People are allowed to dislike certain artists and genres. Quit being a biased elitist prick thank you.

6 Experimental Experimental

I can definitely get behind some experimental stuff, but then there's others that I just can't get into. A good example would be Death Grips. I've tried many times to like their music considering the wide amount of praise they get but I could just never get into their style. - Mcgillacuddy

Some might like how there's variety to it other people might dislike how it sounds.

Kinda obvious isn't it? lol - EliHbk

7 Nu Metal Nu Metal

It's not too much actually but close enough. - LightningStrike

I see Nu Metal as a genre that IS pretty much for everyone who likes rock - it was meant for mainstream rock/rap/punk audiences. But it wasn't meant for metal fans. The biggest problem of Nu Metal is the word "metal" in its name because it's very misleading. - Metal_Treasure

Some might hate for being "Poser Metal" and again others like myself might like it due to the heaviness of the guitar riffs.

8 Pornogrind

This isn't a music genre and shouldn't be on this list - it's extreme punk (combo: grind/core/gore) with porn lyrics. There aren't many bands and I don't know why it always gets too much attention, and it's always on music genre lists.
And no, this is NOT metal. Metal bands wouldn't waste their time and talent on songs about porn. Metal bands stay away from sex lyrics, let alone porn. In the early 80s Dave Mustaine wrote lyrics with sexual references to Metallica's The Four Horsemen but Hetfield said the lyrics were silly and wrote new lyrics - about the The Four Horsemen of the apocalypse. - Metal_Treasure

I don't get it either, my guess is people talk about it all the time because they are just looking for an excuse for why they say "metal isn't as good as you think it is" even though the genre is not a metal genre and not even a music genre. - christangrant

9 Country Country

Old Country is good, but new New Country is awful music made for Rednecks.

Not for everyone, just exclusively for me. I love (classic 20th century) Country. - Britgirl

In my opinion, old Country is pretty good. - PackFan2005

Some might like it for the Twang-ish voices others like myself might despise it.

10 Emo Emo

Emo isn't a genre, it's just a lot of music from different genres that grouped together because the same people listen to it. - Ketrikal

The Contenders

11 Dubstep Dubstep

Definitely not for me I like to call it noise...

12 Opera

Now, this is what I call "not for everyone". - Metal_Treasure

13 Screamo
14 Disco
15 NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal) NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal)

Wait this is a actual genre?

This isn't a music genre - it's just black metal with specific lyrics. There aren't many bands. - Metal_Treasure

16 Rap

Like any genre it has a mix of both critics and fans alike. Some like it others think it's terrible but it does vary.

Definitely not for me. I like 2-3 songs though. - Metal_Treasure

My mom is so biased and ignorant when it comes to rap music... She thinks my type of music which is alternative rock with old pop music is loud and sad which is not true. But okay, go listen to your songs that repeat the N word 10 times in a 3 min time span lmao

17 Progressive Rock Progressive Rock Progressive rock is a broad genre of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom and United States throughout the mid to late 1960s.

Two words: Pink Floyd. (also rush, yes, etc.) - Metal_Potato

Not everyone loves how complex it is, but I love this genre, it’s my favorite. Those perfectly flawless written masterpieces make my soul feel light. - NightmareCinema

18 Deathcore Deathcore
19 Krautrock Krautrock
20 Post Grunge Post Grunge

Some might think it's a terrible attempt at reviving Grunge music others like myself might think that it's pretty okay.

I like both Grunge and Post Grunge.-DarkBoi-X

21 Pop Punk Pop Punk

I disagree. Like all pop and pop versions of existing genres, Pop Punk is meant for a bigger mainstream audience than standard punk so it's pretty much for everyone (eh, not literally for everyone but you know what I mean). - Metal_Treasure

Some might like it for the poppy melodies others might hate it for how immature it can sound.

To be honest I love pop punk. Especially The Script.

22 Progressive Metal Progressive Metal

Especially Extreme Progressive Metal where complexity comes with more heaviness. Currently Progressive Death Metal is one of my favorite metal subgenres. - Metal_Treasure

23 Hardcore Punk Hardcore Punk
24 Country Rock Country Rock
25 Polka
26 Mumble Rap Mumble Rap

This technically isn't a genre...

27 Crunkcore
28 Alternative Metal Alternative Metal Alternative metal is a music genre that infuses heavy metal with influences from alternative rock and other genres normally associated with metal.
29 Jazz Jazz
30 Chillwave
31 Glam Metal Glam Metal
32 Ska
33 Pop

Some might hate for being too commercial but I think it's alright as long as Auto Tune isn't abused.

34 Southern Rock Southern Rock

Definitely not for everyone - NightmareCinema

35 Riot Grrrl
36 Post-Punk Post-Punk
37 Trip-Hop
38 Horrorcore
39 Bro-Country
40 Trance
41 Rap Rock Rap Rock
42 Heartland Rock
43 Neo-folk
44 Happy Hardcore Happy Hardcore
45 Metalcore Metalcore

Not for me and I don't hate for it being "Poser metal" but rather because of how terrible the lyrics are half the time.

46 Punk Rock Punk Rock Punk rock is a subgenre of rock music. It usually has rebellious lyrics and down stroked power chords played on guitars. Bad Religion, Sex Pistols, and Green Day (actually pop-punk, which is still punk in a way) are a few punk rock bands. The subgenre influenced thrash metal because of it's down stroked ...read more.
