Music Genres Requiring an Acquired Taste

Now these are music genres that you might not like at first but will probably grow on you later.
The Top Ten
1 Death Metal

I used to hate it but I honestly like some of it now. you just gotta listen to the right bands. not all of it is Cannibal Corpse and unintelligible growls. there are some good death metal bands like Children Of Bodom, Death, Possessed, Obituary, etc

Believe me, I used to hate Death Metal but this genre grew on me. I first got into Death(One of the founding Death Metal bands) and then Dark Tranquility(A Melodeth band which is Death Metal but they have some clean vocals too). I then got into a few Deathcore bands like Suicide Silence and Whitchapel. I then got into Opeth.
Now Opeth are currently my favourite Death Metal band but they are more of a Prog Rock band from the songs I have listened to. They still have good Death Metal songs.

Actually to me it seems sometimes that EDM, dubstep or mainstream pop are the genres that really require an acquired taste, because there is something missing from my music listening experience that is present in that of the fans of above said genres.

At first you might find it too aggressive, but when you give melodic death metal or prog death metal a chance, you'd eventually start a liking for it

2 Art Rock/Progressive Rock

An epic genre, Prog Rock(Also known as Art Rock) is quite an experimental genre but due to the odd time signatures(Prog bands don't use 4/4 signature which is common in other genres) and how long some of the songs can get, it can be hard for many normies to get into Art Rock.

Considered a bit too complex for some

3 Scream Rap/Trap Metal

Now I know when the most popular scream rapper was 6ix9ine, that seriously stains the genre but there are many other scream rappers that are good like Scarlxrd, Ghostemane, older XXXTentacion(Like before he released 17), Zillakami, PRXJEK, etc. Trap Metal is a cool genre.

4 Experimental Rock

Just like with prog Rock and Art Rock, Experimental Rock can be hard to get into due to the odd time signatures and the different instrumentals.

Listen to captain beefheart's trout mask replica 40 times and you will like it

Love it. Of course, the definition is wide. But I always love very weird music.

A bit too unorthodox to those who are used to simple music

5 Noise Rock

A subgenre of Rock that often pushes the boundries of music, in fact just like other genres of Noise music, Noise Rock will often be borderline of music and plain noise.

Which Artists would be examples of Noise Rock?

Yep. Agree with this.

6 Noise Pop

Kind of ironic that a pop sub genre is so high.

Same explanation as Noise Rock.

7 Black Metal

I've started to get into Black Metal recently. Somehow, I am finally starting to like how it sounds. I so far really like some of it's sub-genres like Viking Metal and Melodic Black Metal.

Hard to get into, especially since the Norwegian black metal movement not only ruined the reputation of black metal itself, but all of metal in general

Really hard to get into but many of the times it is an acquired taste.

8 Gangsta Rap

Can be hard for many normies to get into due to the lyrics about gang violence, drug abuse, police brutality, etc but you can't deny how badass rappers like DMX are.

Similar with death metal

9 Experimental Hip Hop
10 Screamo

Hate it but I used to like some bands. From what I've hear it's a term for pseudo-metal bands who have been also classified as Metalcore or Post Hardcore

The Contenders
11 Sludge Metal
12 Power Metal

Those who generally don't listen to metal and/or love fantasy, mythology, or history might find this kind of "nerdy" and "cheesy," but eventually they might find those traits part of the charm of power metal.

13 Grindcore

I see why grindcore is on this list but I have to say my opinion is that it is the exact opposite of requiring an acquired taste. I think grindcore is enjoyed by people who need an acquired taste for any other genre, because they have absolutely no aim of listening to music than enjoying brutality (this is not the case for death metal!).

14 Slam Metal
15 Shoegazing

I know a few people in real life and online who are into it but I never could get into it. it just sounds like a wall of weird noise to me. an acquired taste for sure though

16 Vaporwave
17 Dubstep

Mitch Lucker from Suicide silence had sung in a Dubstep song.

18 Folk
19 Classical
20 Hardcore Punk
21 Free Jazz
22 Anti-Folk

Pretty unconventional.

23 Blackgaze
24 Britpop Britpop is a UK based music and culture movement in the mid 1990s which emphasised "Britishness", and produced bright, catchy pop music partly in reaction to the US led grunge music and the UK's own shoegazing music scene.
