Top Ten Music Listening Habits to Get Into

The Top Ten
1 Focus on what you are listening to

Music can be either an active or inactive activity. Most of the time, we tend to put music on in the background while doing other things. I encourage you to try listening to music actively. It is a much more engaging experience, and it can help you learn about why you like the music you like.

It's quite stimulating I guess.

2 Support smaller artists
3 Listen to lots of new music you've never heard before

Search for recommendations and similar artists to what you like! Alternatively, step outside of your comfort zone sometimes and listen to something you wouldn't normally listen to!

4 Think about why you like what you like

What emotions does it provoke in you? If you know music theory, what musical qualities make you enjoy a particular type of music?

5 Listen to a large variety of music
6 Listen to music in a higher sound quality

I recommend buying a decent pair of headphones (do your research: it depends on what quality you want, the brand, and what you want to pay). I also recommend listening to music at a higher bitrate (320kpbs or higher is what I suggest for top-notch audio). It makes a difference once your ears really start getting used to higher quality sound!

7 Ask yourself if artists you dislike are actually bad, or if they are just average and/or meant for a different audience
8 Ask other people for listening suggestions
9 Read the lyrics as you listen to them

This helps a lot when trying to understand and interpret song lyrics.

10 Listen to albums all the way through and unshuffled the first time you listen to them

This may seem like common sense, but a lot of people just put albums on shuffle. This works for most albums, since most albums are just collections of songs without a proper order. But I find it much more satisfying to listen to albums all the way through in the intended order, at least for the first listen.
