Top 10 NFL Players of the 70s
Very difficult and sad to admit, but he was indeed an absolutely amazing football player. What a shame.
He began this decade by appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated by calling Dick The Most Feared Man in the Game. That year, he lived up to the hype by being named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year and played in the Pro Bowl that year. He would play in 2 more Pro Bowls in a row in 1971 and 1972 before injuries to his right knee and then leg forced him to retire after the 1973 season. Butkus would later be named to the 1970s NFL-ALL Decade Team and later the Hall of Fame.

Nobody in the Raiders franchise, has this man dedicated to the game he loves and how he cares about the players more then him. As a leader by example, Upshaw led the Raiders from just a playoff contender into the most successful franchise in sports when he retired in 1981. A member of the 1970s NFL ALL-Decade Team, Upshaw opened up protection for Ken Stabler to make great passes to Cliff Branch and Fred Biletnikoff and opened up a running game that was one of the best in the NFL. Upshaw was also a part of some of the NFL's Greatest Games including the infamous Immaculate Reception and The Sea of Hands
That's why Upshaw is in the Hall of Fame.
