Chris Simms's Top 40 Quarterbacks Countdown

I did a random search and I came across ProFootballTalk somehow, and in doing so managed to check out the video to who was revealed in each day went down. With that said I took the time to listen to the initial list and some of it was spot on while others were a bit surprising to see in the 40 that includes backup quarterbacks.

#40 Tyrod Taylor - Yeah he's one of the better of the backups out there, and his behind Phillip Rivers alright quite the reward to have that is he doesn't get hurt.

#39 Colt McCoy - I'm not sure why his one the list at all considering the quarterback situation in Washington is between rookie Dwayne Haskins or Case Keenum. Colt McCoy shouldn't be on this list to me his a 3rd stringer he may never hit the field ever again as a starting quarterback.

#38 Dwayne Haskins - Speaking of probably who could have ranked higher on the list and that's indeed Dwayne Haskins. I think he will shine the brightest of these rookies, and could be big for Washington. Yes Haskins is not that mobile, but he shows flashes of an NFL player would translate into.

#37 Drew Lock - Yeah he would be on the list depending on how you look at things, but it was that or Daniel Jones who will be lucky to start a game seeing Eli won't give up the chair to anybody realistically. Joe Flacco could start, but a quarterback change during the season with Denver would not shock me.

#36 Robert Griffin III - RG3 at this point in his career is done, but his just there to teach Lamar how to be better, and by that don't blow your kneecaps like he did that cost him his starting career.

#35 Ryan Fitzpatrick - Ryan Fitzpatrick is the modern day Vinny Testaverde a guy who can be a great backup quarterback, but is not the regular season starter at the end of the day. This could be another chapter in his career he comes in for a very young inexperienced Josh Rosen most likely to start day one.

#34 Eli Manning - I mean I'd say Eli is a hall of famer, but I would not say 1st ballot hall of famer, but in any case it is time to go, it's great to say you beat Tom Brady twice, but that's pretty much it for a very average career in terms of stats and all. Point is the Giants are not going anywhere unless Eli chooses to retire which is gonna be when exactly?

#33 Ryan Tannehill - Oh god Glashill yeah that's probably true ironically Titans have a problem in 2019 in the quarterback dilemma. Marcus Mariota has now become and injured prone leader, and even worse they trade for a guy who's basically the same player only very unproven as a starting quarterback.

#32 Josh Rosen - A little too high for young Rosen especially for the talent he has around him is a slight downgrade of average guys to work with. I like the guy but he was doomed to fail from where he was drafted, and now his gotta hope for the best.

#31 Jacoby Brissett - Yeah Andrew Luck technically has a backup quarterback who could win them games not very many, but Brissett does hold his own pretty when he did in the 2017 season where Colts pretty much were in a tanking spire.

#30 Lamar Jackson - Too Low for who could be one of the most electrifying quarterbacks coming into this season. Lamar Jackson has a chance to be a dangerous player in this league, and if he improves his passing deficiency look out AFC North.

#29 Marcus Mariota - I liked Mariota in his first two years he was moving up, and then he fell way down after getting hurt the second time around told me something is wrong here. 3rd year regressed badly, 4th year hurt Blaine Gabbert had to go through the rest of the games they fall to rival Colts. This could be the one weakness if Mariota goes down the team may just crumble.

#28 Case Keenum - Case is only a quality quarterback if you give him the proper system in play like Minnesota for example that worked brilliantly problem is not every team will have what Keenum could fit thus he won't be the starter for long perhaps in DC.

#27 Jameis Winston - This is it for Winston he bomb again his starting quarterback career ends. His lucky to have one more shot the ride could of ended after last seasons rotation debacle. This time you don't have a quality backup to bail you out no more excuses to be made you have a top 5 receiver, and a pair of pretty good tight ends use them well crab legs.

#26 Andy Dalton - At this stage of his career Dalton is not better than Lamar Jackson come on. Red rifle has regressed awfully, and his best days are now behind him I mean seriously he has a terrible offensive line, and now making it harder for him to do anything.

#25 Joe Flacco - Joe cool started off good in Baltimore only eventually the jets went sour in Carolina, and he never started another game in favor of Lamar Jackson. Now being the guy in Denver can he do great consistently in a bit of a tough division to prove he can still hang in as a top notch quarterback he once was 6 seasons ago.

#24 Kyler Murray - Kinda fair, but also a bit too high if Dwayne Haskins is only 38 on the list. You might as well have these two side by side, but the problem for Kyler is for his size, and that he is a mobile quarterback I can see him having a rough rookie year with what looks like a weak offensive line.

#23 Josh Allen - Now yes his passing stats are not great, but his like a better version of Tim Tebow at the very least his a tall 6'5 guy who will risk his body all by himself to haul in touchdown that's how much of a force he is how fast in lunges on in. If he makes a big leap in year two Bills may give the Patriots hard times finally.

#22 Sam Darnold - Started off promising, but then looked like a joker by week two. Darold was every inconsistent throughout his first year, but has major upside in if he can be fixed his 2nd year. Adam Gase would be of a quarterbacks coach than of a head coach in all honesty. Nevertheless this Jets team all eyes will be on offense than it will be defense.

#21 Jimmy Garoppolo - I could see have a comeback year story if he uses this offense correctly and doesn't hurt himself. The worst thing that could happen is if he hurts himself out for the year again than the panic button engages in San Fran. Everything is gonna fall on the hands of Jimmy G in 2019 Kyle Shanahan is literally depending on him to be out there.

#20 Mitchell Trubisky - Now yes his 0-1 in the playoffs, but the sad thing is I can see Trubisky not only improve as a player in year 3, but even win a playoff game before another two NFC North quarterbacks ever get to that point that are ranked higher on the list of which is highly debatable where they would land.

#19 Jared Goff - Way too low for Goff, I'd put him in the top 15 considering he is better then half the other quarterbacks in this field, yet i'm not putting him top 10 though either with that crushing loss he just suffered.

#18 Derek Carr - I could see him in the top 20 at most seeing he'll have some good receivers in Antonio Brown, and Tyrell Williams to throw to bounce back from a few terrible years. I would not rank him higher than Jared Goff though. Oh more entertaining the Raiders are gonna be on hard knocks how could they not be?

#17 Baker Mayfield - Just missed top 15 interesting, I could see why though the hype is real, but in doing so he played great towards the 2nd half once Hue Jackson got canned rightfully so. Yes his a hot head, but opposite of what Johnny Manizel was. I would make a case he's gonna be a top 10 quarterback this season. His gonna have some lethal running backs to toss quickly to. Lethal duo of Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. Mayfield could have a big leap of faith in year two, and the Browns success could rely on him now with no more Tyrod Taylor at backup.

#16 Nick Foles - Foles is too high as much as I like him I'll be very stunned if he actually gets this offense going which looks like a very bad supporting offense of misfits. Kudos maybe he is different then when he started out as. I just think for where his placed a tiny bit high above others who I could see having a big year he ranks above some of those.

#15 Kirk Cousins - That's a good spot his a middle of the road quarterback who can have his highs and certainly his lows similar to the other NFC North quarterback who I can't believe has been revealed at this point in the list in many ways. Just more vocal at the very least. ''You like that, YOU LIKE THAT!''

#14 Matthew Stafford - I think that's too high for what was one of his worst seasons as a pro make another bad regression then your talking barely a top 20 quarterback. Apparently Stafford played with a bad back last season while nobody knew of it. That's pretty scary to know coming into this season knowing he could of been possibly paralyzed if hurt badly. What's worse is the team does not have a quality quarterback depth situation so if he actually goes down in 2019 than the Lions could end up last place in the division. If he ends up somehow playing decent with a bad back i'll be stunned Carson Wentz had to get surgery with a similar injury that amazes me that slipped so soon.

#13 Dak Prescott - Prescott made major improvements in year three, and might just get better as the years go on sure his an above average quarterback, but if he can put up a great season in 2019 than this stands really good. Dak’s got some veteran receivers to throw to in Amari Cooper, and Randall Cobb. This offense could look much better consistently on paper you got your top 3 tail back in zeke Eliott, and a very fascinating move of Jason Witten coming outta retirement. Prescott could have a good to great year I'd be stunned if we see him as inconsistent in year four then the pattern would align.

#12 Phillip Rivers - Wow really just missed the top 10 how? Now yes the one knock on him is that he can't beat Tom Brady I get that, but Phillip Rivers is probably one of the best players of all time to never win a super bowl. Philip’s got a talented team by him his gotta pray the Patriots don't get near them otherwise you could see this team right now be a considered favorite based on true balance of the football they have locked and loaded. Despite losing deep threat Tyrell Williams Rivers looks to use a lot more outta Hunter Henry (who will look to return to form).

#11 Carson Wentz - I can see Carson Wentz be between a top 10 to 15 type quarterback his very good when healthy i'll say that, but if he gets hurt again then the Eagles made a giant mistake releasing Nick Foles. I mean the stats don't like he is a good quarterback, but if you are plagued by injuries that is the one knock I have with Wentz. Great supporting case, solid offensive line he should thrive really well just gotta avoid taking big devastating hits.

#10 Drew Brees - What? Ugh... not in the top 5 if not top 3 still playing like an elite quarterback even his reasoning makes no clear evidence of a strong case for me. Now yes he has more support then some of these other quarterback, but Brees has all the arsenal he has never had in almost a decade when he won the first time around I'd argued his my #1 this season based on how screwed he got last season, and also the Minnesota miracle. Brees is out for one goal win one last championship and ride the sunset as one of the greatest to play the game.

#9 Tom Brady -... Yeah i'm done with this list! Seriously the GOAT is only 9? How stubborn can Chris Simms be right here alone. He carried what was the most average of winning super bowl teams, and didn't have flashy receivers all season and still did a good to great job leading the way. This year his got better loaded players for support the only exception is Tight End. He should still play at a high level Patriots are the favorites once again because of him without him there done period. Yeah there are a few quarterbacks higher than Brady he I feel don't deserve that distinction of ranking higher at least in my view your about to see coming up next.

#8 Cam Newton - How in a straight face can anybody rank Cam Newton higher than Tom Brady right now? Newton has that concerning shoulder injury and had a second half collapse. I can see why they drafted Will Grier just for Carolina's concern of the playing shoulder he has could very well end his starting career. I would argue his not the best 16 quarterback heading into the season due to the limitations and durability he has taken has hurt him hard over the years. The only exciting thing in Carolina right here right now is not Newton himself, but of the future the lines with Grier (maybe), and McCaffrey keeping that team in the middle of the pack.

#7 Matt Ryan - This is the opposite of Cam Newton, Matt Ryan is still playing like a great quarterback for his team. He had struggling protection no good running game, and still had a quietly great season despite the fumble turnovers as seen. At seven is about right I'd say Ryan’s got the best receiving core, and the team relies too much on him after that defense took a hit as well. He had an outside shot at making the pro bowl I fought but that somehow didn't happen.

#6 Ben Roethlisberger - No doubt Big Ben is a hall of famer, but I Doubt that his a top 10 Quarterback in 2019. Now yes he threw for 5,000 yards, but with no AB, or LB let's see how they get by with James Connor, Juju & whoever else they got its very few weapons, but they have such high expectations to succeed in this type of offensive scheme where Big Ben want to throw long to somebody. Problem is he gets a bit too inconsistent as you saw last year I feel more of that will fall once again.

#5 DeShaun Watson - There is a case to have Watson in the top 10 i'm not entirely sure about top 5 myself. He has the worst offensive line in football, but at the same time gives hope to an above average offense. No doubt his a winner, but he'll be road kill if the Texans aren't careful.

#4 Andrew Luck - I would have him one more spot higher just because now his out for elite status, and would like a super bowl to add to his legacy. Luck has a subpar set of weapons. Some great, while others are just okay. Luck can make things happen for sure, and I think he will have a great 2019 season for sure. I mean the offense would be top 5 if all stays the way they are Colts are primed and a heavy favorite in the AFC aside from the Patriots just based on how quarterback play holds up is what the team will reply mostly on.

#3 Russell Wilson - Okay hear me out the last few years I am very impressed with what Russell Wilson can do with an average offensive line, but this year I think he takes a step backwards. The defense is trying to find itself once again, and the weapons he has around him are not very above average. Doug Baldwin is gone, Tyler Lockett is mostly a punt return guy, David Moore is okay, but we need to see more of him to identify with Seattle's passing game being somewhat unknown receiving core. I like the promise of utilizing Tight Ends better now, but against the high pay he got I think it's just that and the team in general there's not much to expect but to take a temporary breather at least to me he could miss the playoffs for the first time in his career this season.

#2 Patrick Mahomes - Madden curse and all hits as high as second among the other quarterbacks. Well Mahomes is a young phenom for sure, but now with the stack all against the Chiefs this year to even win the super bowl massive pressure if the curse can be broken. No Tyreek Hill, Whose the number one receiver gonna be? Travis Kelce is great, but eventually teams are gonna double him. Damien Williams could help out here, and there I just think Kansas City was set up to fail after their amazing season fall at the hands of a coin flip that decided their fate and now this is what it led up to two months later.

#1 Aaron Rodgers - When I saw Brady all the way down at nine I fought okay that gives me the feeling I know who is gonna be number one by default since everybody on Profootballtalk (in general) treat Aaron Rodgers as this god no matter the last two years he has had wasted years with. One of the most accurate, and smartest player, but my problem with being at the top spot if the fact that even with such a high caliber player on offense that can make things happen over the years why is it that the defense with talent always let him down? To me the Packers are back is if somehow This coach Quarterback dynamic actually goes well I'll be quite shocked seeing what I see outta Green Bay i'm just not convinced to say it confidently like I have been the last few years.

That's the list and with this I leave it to you how you feel about these rankings. I just think in comparison to the radio station's rankings against an actual expert who played the game I'd almost prefer the other just slightly more even if its slightly outdated. Yeah I also made on, and to be fair there were some players I didn't expect to be as great as Mahomes would be in that season alone. Definitely a young phenom no doubt though.
