Smells Like Teen Spirit
This is the song that made realize there was more music out there than the mainstream top 40.
I'm a 13 year old girl. All my life I've listened to pop music. I've thought for a long time it was kind of annoying, but I went along with it. After all, "it was cooler to listen to pop" and "the only other music is that stupid Beatles and Elvis junk". Well, that's what I thought.
Then one day in music class a few months ago we learned about grunge music. My teacher put on the Smells Like Teen Spirit music video as an example. I instantly loved it. By the time Kurt (aka 'shaggy hair dude' because I didn't know who he was) was singing/screaming the chorus I realized that this was the kind of music I wanted to listen to. I loved every second of the video and song, especially how it goes from all mellow to rocking out or whatever you call it. Even though other Nirvana songs have better lyrics, this will always be my favorite. It let me escape from what everyone else was listening to, and ...more
Look, I know this song is overplayed and there are a lot of phony fans that only know this song, but there's a reason it's popular. It's got good lyrics (not their best, but still good), it's got a good beat, it's easy to sing or dance along to, which makes it catchy. Come As You Are, In Bloom, Lithium, Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, etc. ; all of these probably have better lyrics but Smells Like Teen Spirit is catchier and I normally judge songs by their lyrics as a main priority but this, in my opinion, is better than all of their other stuff, although it is a bit overplayed. And as much as I hate phony fans who only know this song, I hate fans who dislike this song just because Kurt did equally.
I very much agree with this songs ranking! It is such a great song... Instrumental, lyrics, vocals and just the whole damn song is amazing I was born in the wrong era of rock this is one of the best songs from nirvana and in the history of music... Now a days we have crappy rock music very much unlike back in the day... R.I.P kurt cobain and long live nirvana!
Smells like the only nirvana song you know.
I love Nirvana. I have posters and t-shirts and constantly quote their lyrics. But I feel like I have a deeper connection with them. I actually understand their songs. I cry when I listen to some of them. I'm always depressed, and their songs either cheer me up or allow me to cry as much as I need to. I'm only 11, but Nirvana is my favorite band hands down.
This is a really good song, but choosing your favourite song from all of Nirvana's is virtually impossible! They are ALL AMAZING! But this songs has a lot of meaning for me, it reminds of the good times when I was younger, so that's why 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' gets my vote.
This is one of those songs that you can keep listening to throughout the day and never get tired of it. The intro is catchy then it goes right into a heavier beat. I am 12 years old and everyone in my grade is into Justin Bieber, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga. But I am into rock and will always be. Alternative and Grunge for life
This is Nirvana's most popular song for a reason. It completely sums up the awesomeness of the Seattle Grunge in one of the most epic 5:01 anyone lucky enough to hear the song will ever experience. Also, I don't find it fair that a cover is keeping songs that deserve to be in top ten out of it
An Anthem to days long gone. I really miss the sound of the 1990's. To days music Sucks.
If you think this song doesn't absolutely ROCKS you haven't lived yet... This is one of the most famous, legendary, best and popular song of all time! The guitar, bass, drums, beat, vocals and everything is just amazing. Kurt wil truly be missed.. LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL!
One of the most definitive songs of all era! It's the widest known anthem for the youth! The guitar is killer... Drums amazing... Vocals mind blowing! The riff and tunes are unforgettable... What more can you ask of a song!
The song that probably started all. I was so good that it became too popular and that is why Nirvana did not wanted to play it anymore at their concerts. That does not take it's greatness.
How could you now pick this song? It's so awesome and well known. No doubt the best Nirvana song ever. The only thing about the song is that you can barely understand what Kurt Cobain is saying but other than that is song is awesome.
Awesome song... To good... I'm a huge fan of rock, and this song has been my favorite... Its pure rock and awesome rock... The beats are too good... It's my favorite all time rock song... It definitely deserves to be first...
I have to say that this isn't my favorite Nirvana's song, many people know Nirvana as the smells like teen spirit band, but the band is more than just a song. And that piss me off every time! Then I look back when I listened to this song for the first time, and it was outragious, that feeling that is growing on you...I can't even describe it, I'm sure you experienced the same feeling. So imagine a whole generation back in the 90s feeling the same way. Right? I know this song is overplayed, but come on, it changed music and changed me.
This song is a classic! As well as most of Nirvana's music. I am forever a Nirvana fan, thanks to a guy that introduced me. Rest in peace, Kurt.
Very sensitive lyrics about mosquitos and albinos...
One of the best (and overrated) songs of all time! I think lithium should be third though, its like also one of my favorite Nirvana songs...
Kurt Cobain wrote this song for Nirvana; it came together in a jam session when he played it for the band. He said: "I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off The Pixies."
Unbelievable. That is the only word I can think of to describe this track. The song that actually put Grunge on the map. People didn't take the genre seriously until this song.
I have to vote for this because I wouldn't be aware of Kurt and Nirvana without it. Although it's just four power chords it is hard to get just right. Kurt put his soul into singing this song.
This song was the reason Nirvana got so big, one of the best selling singles of all time, started grunge, and this song never gets old and will never be forgotten.
I love this song so much better than ost rock songs today. Such a tragic that the god of music was taken away from us. R. I. P kurt cobain your so awesome.
This song rocks! Keep bobbing my head every time I listen to it. Couldn't describe how I like it! Kurt Cobain's amazing voice, the base, and the drums rock! Love this song so much!
This is the best song of all of nirvana and if you listen closely you can here Kurt Cobain voice crack but I believe and know that all apologies should be the second best
This song should always be remembered as one of the best ever. People nowadays listen to cheesy pop music such as One Direction or Justin Beiber. No disrespect towards One Direction, as they have some nice songs and are leaning to a more pop rock kind of sound now. But come on, Nirvana should be a favorite of everyone's. Not one song of theirs is bad.
