Top Ten Non Legendary Kanto Pokemon

The best of the original 151 Pokemon, excluding legendaries.
The Top Ten
1 Charizard Charizard, known in Japan as Lizardon, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. Created by Ken Sugimori, Charizard first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue and subsequent sequels. They have later appeared in various merchandise, spinoff titles and animated and printed adaptations of the franchise. Shin-ichiro Miki, the actor who voices James in the original Japanese version of the Pokémon anime, voices Charizard in both the Japanese and English-language versions of the anime. An orange, draconic Pokémon, Charizard is the evolved form of Charmeleon and the final evolution of Charmander. It has two other forms, Mega Charizards X and Y, which are its ...read more.

Did you choose a Charmander to get this bad boy? If not, you're either a heathen or a liar. Sure it can't hold its own vs Blastoise, but it doesn't need to - It can knock out Dragonites with the right moves, and is a bane for Grass/Bug/Ice/Steel/Fighting types, and with the scarcity of good Fire types in the original titles and remakes, why would you pass on the only Fire/Flying badass this side of Moltres? Plus, it's an iconic beast in the franchise. I rest my case

This beast can DESTROY anything that stands in it's way. In Omega Ruby, he was the ONLY Pokemon in my team, and he sweeped all of the Elite Four and then melted all of Steven's steel Pokemon. He can also fly, which is useful in the Pokemon 3ds games. Also, when I used his promo card in a Pokemon tournament, I put him with a Houndoom EX and I did REALLY good. An amazing Pokemon to choose for your starter. Great job being #1, Charizard!

Oh my gosh what the heck is he doing at 5? He can beat a blastoise, and destroy venisaur in two moves tops. But enough of the game. IN THE SHOW he has only LOST ONE BATTLE. He has defended ash from an entei and beat an articuno. He is so epic. Where is the other starters? Sitting in their pokemon or watching the battle helplessly as charizard is being a boss taking down pokemon one by one

Charizard is overrated, but it can pack a punch if trained and used properly. You can't just throw him out into battle and expect to win with one hit, you have to plan to use it on Pokemon weak to it. And it has bad HP, as what I mean is that it has the lowest base HP out of the Kanto starters. It is quick and versatile, but must be used carefully.

2 Dragonite Dragonite, known in Japan as Kairyu, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Ahh, dragonite. The original pseudo legendary. Anyway, this thing had the highest gen 1 attack, which just made it amazing. Sadly, 4 weaknesses hurt, especially the ice one. However, it's still pretty dang good, the 600 base stat total is pretty good, it learns a variety of moves, and it generally is a nice Pokemon. Without agility support he isn't really that fast, but set one up and he's ready, not to mention the UNGODLY dragon dance. Inner focus protects it from flinchhax (read: jirachi's iron head) but its not very useful. Multiscale, on the other hand... If dragonite's at full hp an attack will do 50% less damage to him. Its very, VERY good. Its amazing ability, good stats, fantastic movepool, and many other factors make, indeed, him the best gen 1 kanto starter. But the stealth rock weakness hurts him. But it hurts charizard more.

Dragonite is by far the strongest non legendary, the fact that Charizard was voted above it is absurd, Charizard only beats Dragonite in popularity, in actual stregnth and usefulness Dragonite is one of the strongest and versitile Pokemon from the Kanto region that is still used, without the need to have a mega evolution to make it good. Dragonite simply outdoes Charizard in usefulness in a battle, enough said.

I had a. IV bred dragonite in Pokemon Silver and it was my main Pokemon. Since it had Fly, Dragon pulse, Hyper Beam and blizzard/thunder (alternating) as its moves, it was essentially invulnerable. I now almost always have a dragonite in my online team, usually with that move set. Plus, as much as I love charizard, I think dragonite should be #1.

Dragon far surpasses even charizard. Dragonite is so reare it is almost considered legendary. It is also almost considered legendary because of how good it is. The leader of the Indigo League had one, and it stopped every trainer except ash. It barely lost after being weekend by almost all of ash's Pokemon. which means, it lasted through more Pokemon than a charizard would.

3 Arcanine Arcanine, known in Japan as Windie, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

It's base stat is the highest in this whole list. Why isn't it top one?! Japan don't like dogs so they kept making Arcanine lose easily and I hate Japan. They even said that weak stupid Axew bit one of Arcanine's eyeballs and defeated Arcanine easily! I'm gonna kill the anime! Arcanine was also seen good before. I am happy Meganium killed that Axew. Thanks Meganium! Arcanine and Meganium are friends!

How is Arcanine only 5?! He was supposed to be a legendary Pokemon, and a base stat total of 555, that is WAY higher than it should be for such an easy to evolve one. All you need is a Growlithe and a fire stone and BAM! OP is achieved. Charizard I number 1, but he gets a 4x weakness to stealth rock. Wow, that is just weak. My Arcanine had gotten me out of countless situations.

Arcanine is the best. Mine has saved my butt like a million times. I found him kinda hard to train when he was a Growlithe but once he evolved it was like BAM! Uber-Awesome fire type here to stay and save the day. Definitely the best.

Arcanine is, hands down, the best non-starter fire-type pokemon in that generation. If you chose Squirtle, or heaven forbid- Bulbasaur, he is the best supplementary pokemon you could have.

4 Blastoise Blastoise, known in Japan as Kamex, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

To start off, charizard is overrated. Now let's get to the reasons.
1: he only has one real weakness which is electric. He learns ice beam which takes cares of grass and dragon.
2:He easily beats charizard. All of the kids chose charmander. This made too easy to beat everyone.
3: he is the best competitively. Charizard can never take a hit without fainting. Blastoise, on the other hand, is a tank. He still has a good movepool to go on the offensive side too.
4: he is a water type. Fire is regarded as one of the most powerful types. Guess what, charizard can't beat blastoise. Neither can any fire type. That is why blastoise is the best

Th definition of god tank. Can DESTROY both starters with hydro pump and ice beam. My blastoise rents everyone foolis enough to battle it. Number one is charizard oh wait hydro pump, well then sure dragonite OH WAIT ice beam (dragonite should be first without mega but I think it counts because profile picture of blastoise) lord helix better watch out for this beast!

Blastiose is a beast! I can confirm this because I have Pokemon yellow, the only game where you can gain every starter! Blastoise was my second best ( pikachu being first, but my starter is always best)! Evolved or not he dominated over 6 gyms (In yellow you need 2 gym badges to get squirtle. Blastoise also has a great movesets. All in all Blastoise is the best Kanto Pokemon!

Blastoise, HE CAN BEAT ANYBODY! It can beat every trainer it goes against. I mean I seriously beat everything and everybody. I beat all the gym leaders, and helped me catch marowak, and like 70 other Pokemon in firered, it can learn moves better than water types like dig. Also, if you get mega punch and ir mega kick, well its invincible, I beat misty with that move and other water type moves like water gun. Only once, lkke ash in the anime wih charizard, I lost only once when Iin the poison gym while batting the gym leader. So he is the best Pokemon EVER! NO COMPLAINTS OR YOU WILL FAVE MY BLASTOISE!

5 Gyarados Gyarados is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. It evolves from one of the weakest Pokemon, Magikarp. But Gyarados has a high attack power (as of gen VII, mega Gyarados is ranking #19 for highest attack stat & would rank #10 if legendary Pokemon aren't included), and ...read more.

Magikarp might be bad but when you evolve. Magikarp into this awesome looking beast. He knows a move which can make its dragon moves be more powerful the name of the move is dragon dance

I laughed at Magikarp for ages, but when it evolved. HOLY CHARIZARDS! I always needed him on my team to counter Infernape's weaknesses, and its movepool is diverse, maybe a little too special based considering his attack stat but Gyrados can learn an ELECTRIC type move, so who cares. It's my favourite 1st gen Pokemon and my 3rd favourite overall.

With Electric as its only weakness, Gyarados is the perfect Physical sweeper for any competitive team, and is perhaps the coolest looking Pokémon out there.

It's a boss but really a flying and water type why not a dragon and water type?!

6 Magikarp Magikarp, known in Japan as Koiking, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. It resembles an orange fish with whiskers. It was created by Ken Sugimori, Magikarp first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue and subsequent sequels. It is a water type that evolves into Gyarados at level 20.

Magikarp will sit in his throne one day saying, "How do you think of me now? ", all the while people all over the universe bows down to him. His splash will end droughts, provide water for the needy, and he is great when you fry him up on a cooking pan and he serves great with tartar sauce.

Magikarp has the best move out of any Pokemon. Why is Magikarp not number one when it has splash? Splash is so powerful it should be kept as a move for Gyarados and can single handedly beat the Elite Four. Magikarp is the only Pokemon I would ever use an Everstone on because it is that powerful.

This insanely powerful creature has the power to destroy the universe with its powerful mystic power, Splash. Magikarp created the universe and without Lord Magikarp this World wouldn't exist, it deserves to be Number 1..

Magikarp can take out Mewtwo with one Splash! In Mewtwo Strikes back you never saw a Magikarp in Mewtwo's army. The creators probably did that so they could fake Mewtwo being the strongest along with Mew.

7 Nidoking Nidoking, known in Japan as Nidoking, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Nidoking is one of my favourites from this region! It might start off as a weak Nidoran, but later it becomes a beast with moves like Sludge Wave, Megahorn and Earthquake!

In Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow/Fire Red/ Leaf Green you can catch it even before the 2nd gym! You can find it just before you go to Mt. Moon and you can even get a Moon Stone there! If you already evolved Nidoran Male into Nidorino, just get the Moon Stone and give it to it.

And... there you get it, you already have a Nidoking!

Out of all the Pokemon, Nidoking is my number one favorite! Its move pool, looks and awesome shiny definitely deserves to be among the top 10!

Do you even realise what kind of moves this guy learns?
Electric moves
Fire moves
Poison and ground moves (obviously)
Ice moves
And megahorn!

My nidoking knocked out Bruno using thrash and not even getting confused for Bruno's whole team!

8 Alakazam Alakazam is a Psychic-type Pokemon that was first introduced in Game Freak's Pokemon Red & Green (Blue for outside of Japan) version. Alakazam is the final evolution of the Abra line. It evolves from Kadabra when traded. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it evolves from Kadabra when given a Linking Cord. It is said to have an IQ of 5000 and is a human-like Pokemon. It has high special attack and speed, and is good for Alakazam with its poor defense & mediocre special defense. ...read more.

Pokemon Cypher quote: Think outside the BOX. But seriously, Alakazam will demolish you. Faster and more powerful than gengar, and don't forget that Psychic in gen 1 was horribly broken, with only one weakness in BUG, one of the weakest types. Also, Alakazam has such a great move pool, with STAB psychic and, in gen 1, great Special Defense due to the special merge. Only downside to using an Alakazam is his horrndous defense, but that is hardly a downside when you're so powerful and fast. To quote the Amazing World of Gumball, "Oh my god! He has a SPOON! "

Alakazam is probably the best pokemon in the game next to new and mewtwo due to its psychic type. He is absolutely broken in the first 2 generations.

Everyone who played the original games knows that Alakazam was literally unbeatable on your team.

The original badass psychic Pokemon: if it weren't for legendaries, alakazam has the highest sp attack of all Pokemon hands down.

9 Venesaur

Now let me tell you something okay. Venesaur is my favorite gen one Pokemon for many reasons. Now I did actually get Charmander before Bulbasaur. But the Bulbasaur line is my favorite gen one Pokemon. Venesaur is a fantastic Pokemon, it's the first and only Pokemon at this point to start off with TWO types at it's first evolutionary line. And Venesaur is a bulky Pokemon to say the least, but it's also offensive and fast. It's ability will double it's speed in the sun light and it can take hit's while hitting hard. If you let someone set up sunny day or drought on you with a venesaur, look out. It can learn a TON of moves. But here's my favorite set to use.
-Leech seed
-Giga drain
-Sleep power/Toxic
-Sludge bomb
Venesaur also has a nice design might I say, sadly didn't look so hot in gen one though. Butlook around that and you got your self a grand Pokemon.

Quite possibly the most underrated Pokemon in HISTORY! It has the best move pool of the kanto starters, and is a BEAST with Giga Drain. Not only that, but it is advantageous over first, second, and last gyms in kanto. I'm also a fan of Blastoise, but Venasaur was my first kanto starter. It also has the most creative, and original design of the starters. You have Charizard (most overrated Pokemon) which is simply a dragon, but then you have Venasaur. Now tell me, have you ever seen a dragon's appearance? That's also charizard's design. Now, have you ever seen a dinosaur with a awesome looking plant on it's back, that it uses to suck an
Enemy's life out with Giga Drain? Yeah, I'll bet you want a Venasaur now, but why get one when you have your averrated charizard? Venasaur IS the best Kanto Pokemon hands down.

I've used a Venusaur in each of my succesful playthroughs, Pokemon X and Heartgold, and both of them served well as both a friend and as a warrior. Petal Dance is a very useful move that he can learn and with a high Sp. definitely stat, he won't even feel any electric-type attacks that you throw at him, unlike Charizard, and he can speed through the first three gyms in Kanto
As a Bulbasaur. Instead of picking a Pokemon for its design, like Charizard's, instead think of who would best suit you as a friend. I know that Pokemon is Venusaur for me, and for everyone else who commented on Venusaur.

Venusaur is the most underrated starter of Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and Leaf Green. However it is the best starter because it has a type advantage over the first, second, third, and eighth gyms. Charizard and is only good against the fourth gym and possibly the fifth gym. Also Blastoise only is good against the first and the last gym. Venusaur beats four gyms and has type matches to two of the others allowing it for easier use and it is not weak to any elite four member except Prima/Lorelei.

10 Lapras

It can learn thunderbolt and solar beam this Pokemon does it all. This Pokemon is a boss if I could catch it earlier in the game cause then I would boss start up team and it is a good Pokemon to take out lance. Plus it is so cute and powerful I mean the icon they use for surfing on in the game is a lapras.

Can learn Psychic, Ice, Water and other moves. An easy Dragon-killer. Can destroy anything along the Charizard line. Go Glaze!

Lapras has some of the best base stats of any of the gen 1 pokemon. It also is ice and water type which gives it immunity to fire.

He's capable of learning thunderbolt, has a ton of HP and is an adorable Loch Ness Monster. Don't hate on Lapras - he's fantastic

The Contenders
11 Pikachu Pikachu (Japanese: ピカチュウ) are a species of Pokémon, fictional creatures that appear in an assortment of video games, animated television shows and movies, trading card games, and comic books licensed by The Pokémon Company, a Japanese corporation. A mascot of the Pokemon franchise, it's considered to be the most iconic character of all Pokemon species, as well as a major character in Japanese pop culture, due to its companionship with Ash Ketchum in the anime series. Pikachu has been featured in movies such as Pokemon Detective Pikachu as well as music videos - most notably Katy Perry's "Electric" in 2021.

Why isn't Pikachu number 1?!?! It is Pokemon 's mascot. It is super cute but very powerful! It has a good move set and it is the only electric type Pokemon that can learn surf. Red had one and so did ash! Overall pikachu should have been number 1!

Pikachu is just too adorable to resist and has decent stats and a good movepool as well. Pikachu is also the mascot and is the main starter in Yellow. Everyone loves Pikachu!

Look...
Pikachu defeated a Regice
Pikachu tied with a Latios
But Pikachu loses against a starter Snivy in the Unova region? What the?

This Pokemon can evolve into the best electric Pokemon in Kanto.Pikachu learns the best moves in kanto. It's attack is high, but it's defense is super low.

12 Gengar Gengar, known in Japan by the same name, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

If anything, Gengar is among the most inspired designs in the game (who doesn't feel a contagious smirk slip past their lips when looking at this cheeky demon? ). Granted you have a buddy to trade with, Gengar is a lethal special sweeper, especially against psychic types like Alakazam

It can use shadow ball and sucker punch and those moves are really powerful. It also will put up a good fight against Xerneas because Xerneas is weak to poison types.

This is an amazing pokemon. It's my go-to pokemon in the the game, and I have the mega gengar and gengar ex and gengar, haunter, and gastly pokemon cards. Gengar is number one. VOTE GENGARRR!

Charizard is an overrated bitch who is easily bested by rocks. Gengar is an awesome ghost type that you can't tell whether he's giving you a murderous look or trying to be funny. He can mega evolve and beat the overrated charizard. Maybe he is weak to psychic, but at least he's not weak to a common attack strategy and won't die after one stone edge.

13 Pidgeot

Basically wiped out all trainers I met including the electric type gym, also it has 2 immunities and reasonable stats. (as of pokemon yellow)

No mightyena sooo... PIDGEOT
Pidgey is the first Pokemon I caught so yeah. Same Pidgey is now a pidgeot.

Quickest. Smartest. Could've beat charizard if used correctly

It's Gust attack is very powerful.

14 Snorlax Snorlax, known in Japan as Kabigon, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Too powerful. Replaced my starter Pokemon in Fire Red. Took purely offensive attacks (Body Slam, Secret Power, Belly Drum). SP or BS 1 shots almost everything. If not, use BD then BS and back to 1 shotting every opponent. Even Fighting. Snorlax is an unstoppable tank. Considering not using him anymore since the game's not even a challenge with him...

This guy is a tank and it can learn rest and sleep sleep when snorlax use rest of can heal and sleep but when you use sleep talk it will attack when it's a sleep! I wish it was a pseudo legendary pokemon that will make so much sense by the way I wrote this 6 minutes so pppllleeeasseee! Sorry for that guys I'm A savage you know I'm cool I have a YouTube channel I'm famous and subscribe and like my videos and say if you agree with me or disagree so I talked to much here so by guys addresses please!

This guy is a damage sponge with an incredible HP pool and an equally incredible ability to shrug off damage with rest. With leftovers and the right move set, Snorlax can be practically invincible. This guy is, and has been for some time, the best tank in the game.

I think that Snorlax is way under rated. Back in Pokemon Fire Red, Leaf Green, When he would block the path and you had to get the poke flute and wake him, if you cought him he made a big impact in your Pokemon team if you used him. So I think he should be a little higher.

15 Aerodactyl Aerodactyl, known in Japan as Ptera, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Best fossil Pokemon and is crazy fast. I'm jealous of Ash because he got a ride from one.

A learnset of ground, dragon, flying and electric destroys every team, plus the speed stat and attack stat is high and one of the rarest pokemon in the game and the only Kanto pokemon other than legendaries, starters and other fossil pokemon, where there is only one in the game

His a ability is pressure and few not legendary Pokemon have pressure as there ability

16 Charmander Charmander, known as Hitokage in Japan, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise introduced in the games Pokemon Red and Blue. Available in Pokemon Red, Green, Blue, FireRed, and LeafGreen, this Pokémon is a fire type starter Pokémon. It evolves into Charmeleon at level 16, which evolves into Charizard at level 36.

Charmander is the BEST starter pokemon, he's so adorable, and is so powerful! Everyone thinks he's just cute but he is also a badass. He evolves into charizard! I think it' so cute when he says "char! " Vote for charmander!

Absolute banger of a pokemon. His voice is pure charm and the way he licks ash is amazing.

Charmander is more beast than all the other pokemon. He is the cuteset ever and super powerful!

Wot this doing here

17 Vaporeon Vaporeon, known in Japan as Showers, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

It has one of the highest base HP in the game. Added with its awesome defense and special defense; Vaporeon could easily survive 1-3 super effective moves. Add acid armor to that equation and you've got a simply unbeatable solution.
Not to mention that it's ice beam rivals even Articunos.
With the moves ice beam/surf, toxic, acid armor and protect; this eeveelution EASILY beats some of the best Pokemon in the whole game!

An extremely underrated Pokemon that deserves to be number one, because it can tank pretty much any hit, even those that are super effective on it. it can also deal a lot of damage back (110 base special attack). in addition it can stall a bunch of things with toxic and protect. it has saved me in a bunch of the Pokemon games I've played such as hg/ss, dark rising (a hack of fire red that's insanely hard), Pokemon yellow, and Pokemon X. this thing wrecks, and is my favorite Pokemon.

I always liked vaporeon from the moment I saw it. Not only is it adorable, but this thing is like a tank! By far my favorite eeveelution. It was on my team in LeafGreen and was easily the strongest Pokemon on my team. Even against super affective moves!

I beat the entire elite four in leaf green with just a level 40 vaporeon. Ridiculously high hp and dominated Misty in the anime

18 Jolteon Jolteon, known in Japan as Thunders, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

One of the fastest Pokemon there is in all the region and probably THE FASTEST in kanto. Its sp attack is awesome thunderbolt every time always knocks any opponet off there feet.

Why is it 24! I got a jolteon and it beat so much! :( sad that no one likes it I honestly think that jolteon can beat a ground type cause I already have!

My Jolteon beat someone's darkrai by using 2 thunderbolts.

Jolteon is the best electric type in kanto.

19 Paras Paras, known in Japan as Paras, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.
20 Growlithe Growlithe, known in Japan as Gardie, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Big dog. He was origionally a legendary but changed. However he is so strong and full of beautiful spirits and scent. I want one to rub itself on me.

21 Machamp Machamp, known in Japan as Kairiky, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

This dude is an absolute beast. Put him on any team and he will rip through your opponent. Has enough bulk to usually take a hit and then he brings the pain train on..

22 Meowth Meowth, known in Japan as Nyarth, is a Normal-type Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. Designed by Ken Sugimori, it was first introduced in the Pokemon Red and Blue, and is also known as the mascot of Team Rocket in the anime. At level 28, it evolves into Persian. Meowth has three forms. Its Alolan form is a dark-type Pokemon, and can be evolved into Alolan Persian with high friendship. Its Galarian form is a steel type pokemon that evolves into Perrserker at level 28. Meowth is the first and only pokemon to both have regional forms and a Gigantamax form.
23 Nidoran (Male)
24 Squirtle Squirtle, known as Zenigame in Japan, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. It was originally conceived by Game Freak's character development team and finalized by Chaniah Pantry. It is a squirrel-turtle hybrid. It is a starter Pokémon and evolves into Wartortle which ...read more.

Squirtle doesn't just faint Pokemon. It kills them.

He is my favourite Pokemon ever (it was the first Pokemon card I ever had)

Squirtle is so cute

25 Persian
