Top Ten Original Dreamworks Animated Movies

The next Dreamworks movie to be released in theaters is Abominable on September 27th of 2019, an original Dreamworks movie about a yeti who must return to his family and face his biggest fear according to its synopsis. It's just about two months until we are there and since it is an original movie I'm making a list about the best original Dreamworks movies. I did make a list about the best dreamworks movies with no sequels but this time it's just about originals, AKA movies that are the first installment in a movie franchise, or just a movie with no sequels at all. They can have sequels but as long as they are originals and Dreamworks they are allowed on the list. With that being said here's the list.
The Top Ten
1 How to Train Your Dragon

The How to Train Your Dragon trilogy is one of the best Dreamworks movie trilogies, of not one of the best of all time. I haven't seen the third one yet but the first two movies are some of the best Dramworks movies ever. While the second one is the best one, this one definitely got more charm to it. Excluding the Aardman movies, this is the best original Dreamworks movie of all time. It does a great job at showcasing friendship between a human and a dragon. Everyone sees dragons as pests but it's explained why they act the way they do. Masterpiece movie obviously.

2 Shrek

This is a classic. I can't deny facts because it's just true. Everyone has at least heard of shrek, may it be for the movies, or the memes, and yeah. I mean Shrek spawned pherhaps the biggest internet meme of all time, which is actually rather annoying. Either way if I'm going to be completely honest this movie is definitely overrated and not even that good. The story is about as uninteresting as it can get. Basically Shrek lives peacefully in his swamp until a Lord Farquad sends a bunch of fairy tale creatures there because he's racist towards them I think? Shrek gets mad at this and he and Farquad makes a deal. If Shrek rescues a princess for Farquad, he will remove the fairy tale creatures from Shrek's swamp. Now this whole thing with the fairy tale creatures is definitely quite a funny aspect, as you can find pretty much any classic fairy tale character in the movie ranging from pinocchio, the three bears, snow white and the seven dwarfs etc., however the problem is the movie is ...more

Should be WAY higher

Get out of me swamp

Shrek is awesome

3 Kung Fu Panda

This is a classic everyone knows of. Mainly beause it spawned tons of sequels and overall just is a classic. The story of a panda who dreams of being a kung fu warrior and in fact happens to be the chosen one to become the dragon warrior, the most powerful kung fu warrior of all time and the only one who can defeat Tai Lung, a terror who is doing everything to become dragon warrior himself and uses violence and terrorizes everyone. Tons of character development and backstories and it works all just so well. In fact it's one of the most fun movies ever. However why is it only at #7 then? Well for starters it some very very unreallistic moments. Now yes I get it's a move and it's not suppose to be reallistic but seriously, Tai Lung manages to survive what is really the impossible. He survives being slammed on a cliff with extreme force while at the same time tangled in a vine, and so on. Either way that's the only complaint. Otherwise it's a great movie.

4 Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

In my opinion, this movie deserves the top spot. I've always been a fan of the Wallace and Gromit series by Aardman. They are fun, beautiful and impressive. All of the movies are short films, except for this one, which is a long film, and actually released by Dreamworks. Now you might say that this technically is a sequel, as it's the fourth installment in the Wallace & Gromit series, but this is the only one by Dreamworks, and it works as a stand-alone movie as well. I'm huge fan of this movie and it might be my favourite Wallace & Gromit movie as well. I loved the story, characters and charm this movie has. It was the first one I ever saw as well and it bears tons of nostalgia. It's my favourite one.

5 Madagascar

One of the most overrated movies ever. 2nd one was better

6 The Croods

Aah yes this is one I particularly just love. There's just something so charming and loveable about this specific movie. One of the most creative and original animated movies of all time. No not in terms of story and characters. In that case it's fairly mediocre (good still though). It's creative and original though in terms of setting! It's set during the historic era in a fictional world when the doom of the world is present. When the destruction of the world begins, a family of cavemen (and cavewomen)'s home gets destroyed and they must flee the upcoming end of the destruction that threats to end the whole family. Because this is set in a prehistoric era in a fictional world a lot of the animals and settings are unlike anything I could've imagined. There are giant green saber-toothed tigers, colourful and giant dodos, walking whales, etc. It's just so incredibly unique and creative so this is one of the top choices on the list.

7 Monsters vs. Aliens

This is one of the most underrated dreamworks classics ever in my opinion. I grew up with both this movie and the T.V. series and it just gives me so much nostalgia. I really liked the designs of the monsters, especially the green dino and the story is quite dark for a Dreamworks movie as the earth must protect itself from a specific alien with the help of monsters. Really liked it in my opinion. And unlike a lot of people I don't think the T.V.-series is that bad.

8 Megamind

A wonderful movie with a supervillian as the main protagonist with excellent character development and stuff. This movie deserves a mention here. It's one of the most unique dreamworks movies. Megamind is a supervillian who terrorizes Metro City and the only defense Metro City has is Metro Man, a superhero. When Megamind then actually defeats him one day he gets to rule the entire city. But he realizes how boring it is without a superhero to fight so he attempts to create a superhero because of that. That's so awesome seriously.

An amazing movie!

9 Flushed Away

Another actually Aardman animated movie but at the same time made by Dreamworks, this is the first Aardman movie that uses CGI animation while still having the characters look like classic Aardman characters, and despite being a movie set in the sewer, there were barely any potty humour, which is a great relief. The villian is very interesting. He's a toad who once used to be a pet toad but when his owner got a rat pet the toad was thrown away into the sewers so he wants to kill of the entire rat population in the London sewers as revenge so his toad babies can live there instead. Very interesting villian. And very awesome movie.

10 Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
The Contenders
11 The Prince of Egypt

Often viewed as one of the best 2D Dreamworks animated movies and for good reason. Very deep and emotional story, great character development, and it's actually a pretty dark kids movie when you think about it. It's about Moses, the prince of Egypt who learns about his true identity and is the chosen one to free the hebrews from slavery in Egypt and it's quite well done.

12 Chicken Run

I love this movie!

13 Mr. Peabody & Sherman

Again pretty forgettable. I just have no nostalgia with this one

It's a decent movie

14 Rise of the Guardians
15 Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas

Sinbad is my favourite 2D animated Dreamworks movie. Really it's quite awesome. I think it's way better than "The Road To El Dorado" which was released a few years before. The story is better, it's not nearly as slow or boring, but actually pretty exciting. I like the character development of Sinbad and the overall plot is interesting. Basically a goddess of chaos, Eris steals the book of peace, a treasure that contains the most powerful magic of peace and she accuses Sinbad, a sailor of being the thief so he's sentenced to death. His best friend Proteus sacrifices himself for Sinbad though and Sinbad must get back the book of peace so that both can live. Very good plot.

16 Over the Hedge
17 Turbo

This movie was pretty forgettable for me though

One of the weakest movies ever

18 The Road to el Dorado

Far more memorable than most DreamWorks movies since.

This was forgettable in my opinion

19 The Boss Baby
20 Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

It's an alright movie

21 Antz

I actually like this one better than Bugs.

22 Bee Movie
23 Trolls

Good animation, terrible everything else

24 Shark Tale

I actually liked it
