Top Ten Outrageously Expensive Food Ingredients

The Top Ten
1 White Truffle Truffles are the most expensive food item in the world. They come from the underground ascomycetes family or tubers. The white truffles are the most expensive, particularly the Italian White Alba which was once sold for more than $160,000 for 1.51 kilograms. Truffles are expensive because their cultivation process is very difficult. They are commonly served in many luxurious foods as thin slices on top of other food or shaved garnishment.

The most expensive ever

2 Saffron This is the most expensive spice in the world - it costs at least $2,000 per pound and that depends on the season. This spice is derived from the three stigmas of the flower of Crocus sativus, commonly known as the "saffron crocus". The reason for its exorbitant price is that the stigmas have to be hand-picked, making the harvesting process really difficult. To glean 1 lb (450 g) of dry saffron requires the harvest of 50,000-75,000 flowers.

It is the most expensive food in India.

3 Yubari Melon

WHAT?! This is certainly an outrage! An expensive $26000 to whet a poor appetite! Whew - I'd rather stick to the old-fashioned BigMac!
Frankly loved this list, Subha... Made me realize really cool things! Thanks, Gott segnen!

Yeah I'd say this would be the hardest ever to buy. You could lose all your money.

Whoever made this shouldve listed price so I don't have to Google every item on here

6 Matsutake Mushroom Matsutake is the common name for a group of mushrooms in Japan that are also found in Asia and Europe. Matsutake Mushrooms can go up to $2000 per kilogram, start from $1000. It's the most expensive mushroom in the world because it's very delicious.
7 Kobe Beef Kobe Beef comes from Japan and is so tender and fatty that rivals foie gras in texture. The cow is fed on beer and grain (Japanese breed of black cow). Kobe Beef can cost up to $300 per pound.

200$ a pound. If you see something like a "Kobe Burger" it probably isn't the real thing. Kobe Beef is only produced by special cows in Japan.

8 Swallow's Nest
9 Almas Caviar
10 Shark Fin

Shark fin soup is disgusting and outrageously expensive. Disgusting in the sense, many sharks are being killed for a little bit of soup. And research have showed that shark fin have zero nutritional value. So why kill such poor creatures? This is nearly driving them towards extinction.

I absolutely LOVE shark fin soup. Even at $100.00 a bowl for the most premium thick soup, I'm willing to get it. It is a big bowl, enough for four people. I love to use the Chinese red vinegar to make it even more delicious!
