Top 10 Most Overhyped Things from the 1990s Decade

In memorandum of probably THE most overglorified decade ever

The Top Ten

1 Nirvana Nirvana was an American grunge band that was formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. Nirvana disbanded after Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994. The drummer of the band, David Grohl, went on to start the Foo-Fighters, an alternative rock band. more.

Meh...that's all I can really say about this artist (besides Kurt Cobain's death, which probably makes up at least half of the entire reason why they got so famous in the first place)

That, and nearly EVERY other highly regarded grunge/alternative band from the decade alone was easily at least an entire LEAGUE above them (yes, even the Stone Temple Pilots, whom many people think were just a wannabe ripoff of Nirvana) - xandermartin98

2 CD-Based Game Consoles

It seems flawed for this to be on the list, especially at the top of this list. The Playstation One is the only CD-Based game console from the 90s to get major attention. Sega Saturn was not very big outside of Japan. Also, I have more respect for Playstation One than the later playstation consoles, since the first console had much greater variety than shooting and sports. The first Playstation console wasn't about realism. It was mainly about creativity.

For the ones that I can name off the top of my head:
GOOD ONES: Playstation (aside from completely overhyped garbage like the original Parappa The Rapper and its obviously massive library of shovelware), Sega Saturn (mostly just for its time), Sega Dreamcast (well, you know, while it lasted, at least)
BAD ONES: Jaguar (aside from Tempest), 3DO (aside from Street Fighter), Sega CD (aside from Earthworm Jim: Special Edition and MAYBE Sonic CD), CD-i (because Youtube is where the poop is), etc - xandermartin98

3 Final Fantasy VII

Nonsensical and ridiculously overinflated storyline (more so than MOST games in the series, amazingly enough), cardboard-cutout characters, flat-out racist African American stereotypes (Barret), combat system that is actually dumbed down compared to most of the series' previous games, god-awful graphics even for the time, cheap final boss that relies far too much on status ailments to make it difficult, an EXTREMELY excessive amount of permanently missable items, immensely long and unskippable summoning cutscenes during combat, probably THE most overrated non-Nintendo villain in gaming history, et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum

Long story short, FF6 and Chrono Trigger (and FF9, and Chrono Cross, and Xenogears, and probably even FF8) were FAR better overall - xandermartin98

4 Super Nintendo

Super Metroid was WAY too easy and short,

Chrono Trigger was much of the same,
Kirby Super Star speaks for itself,
Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario RPG (and Yoshi's Island and Secret Of Mana and Mortal Kombat II) focused WAY too much on visual spectacle,
Final Fantasy VI was quite nearly AS pretentious as VII and almost as broken as a Bethesda game,

Super Mario World (as well as Super Castlevania IV) was home to easily the SINGLE most overpowered item/weapon in the entire series (cape in SMW's case; 8-directional whip in SCV4's),

Earthworm Jim and Aladdin were both better AND longer on Sega Genesis,

Street Fighter II is good but not as good as Alpha 3, even when playing its definitive versions,

Earthbound required basically no strategy,

Star Fox and F-Zero (and Super Mario Kart) aged like raw milk on a hot summer day, etc - xandermartin98

5 The Matrix

Basically what Nostalgia Critic said; its concept, action scenes and special effects were pretty much the only things salvageable about this film in retrospect
And yes, it also leaves you with nothing BUT questions, just to add insult to boredom - xandermartin98

6 Radiohead Radiohead are an English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Colin Greenwoood (bass guitar), Phil Selway (drums), and Ed O'Brien (guitar).

If you're the type of person who views music as actual MUSIC and not the massively pretentious abstract-art projects that Yorke seems to treat his songs as, Radiohead pretty much only WAS good during the 90s (more specifically The Bends and OK Computer, both of which I will gladly admit rank EASILY among THE greatest albums ever produced in musical history); pretty much the entire rest of their discography is just that, okay
(however, it's admittedly largely because of HOW insanely good those two albums were that I can't bring myself to rank this higher on the list) - xandermartin98

7 The Elder Scrolls (Franchise)

Somehow managed to get MORE overhyped with each game

Don't even ASK me about Skyrim - xandermartin98

8 Nickelodeon (Nicktoons) Nickelodeon is an American basic cable and satellite television network launched on December 1, 1977, and is owned by Viacom through Viacom Media Networks and based in New York City.

The ONLY things from the 1990s Nicktoons lineup that I honestly think still hold up in retrospect are Hey Arnold, Rocko's Modern Life, Classic Spongebob, Angry Beavers, and certain bits and pieces of Ren & Stimpy (you know, the parts where Ren goes utterly bananas); REALLY not a fan of everything else
As for the 2000s, we have Avatar/Korra, Invader Zim, Fairly Odd Parents, Harvey Beaks, My Life As A Teenage Robot, and certain bits of pieces of Modern Spongebob (and MAYBE Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, depending on what type of nostalgic mood I'm in)
Yeah, that's pretty much it - xandermartin98

9 Dragon Ball Z (USA) Dragon Ball Z is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation. Dragon Ball Z follows the adventures of Goku who, along with the Z Warriors, defends the Earth against evil. The action adventures are entertaining and reinforce the concept of good versus evil. Dragon Ball Z teaches valuable more.

Don't get me wrong, I AM totally fine with this show being the best of its kind; I just expected a much more sophisticated kind than this, to put it lightly - xandermartin98

10 The Lion King

To the site's notorious TLK hater;

This certainly WAS a great movie, just not THAT great (and I honestly feel pretty confident in saying that after seeing films like Spirited Away, Beauty And The Beast, and especially Iron Giant and the Incredibles)

Also, seriously, what was with Timon's JonTron voice (not that I'm complaining, but seriously, what)
Still not nearly as overrated as Frozen, however,
so I will gladly let it slide - xandermartin98

The Contenders

11 Super Mario 64

It's very dumb that fans hyped this game as the first 3d platformer when it wasn't.

12 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

An overrated game in general

13 Sonic the Hedgehog

Oh god why soniccc - RevolverOcelot

14 Nintendo 64
15 Beavis and Butt-head Beavis and Butt-Head is an American animated sitcom created and designed by Mike Judge. The series originated from Frog Baseball, a 1992 short film by Judge originally aired on Liquid Television.

The movie was actually pretty great in my opinion, but the actual show was "eh" at best - xandermartin98

16 The Ren & Stimpy Show The Ren & Stimpy Show, often simply referred to as Ren & Stimpy, is an American animated television series created by John Kricfalusi for Nickelodeon.

Decent show at times but absolutely pales (overall) when compared to its Rocko contemporary if you ask me - xandermartin98

17 South Park (Comedy Central) South Park is an American adult animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for the Comedy Central television network. The show is about four boys, who are Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick, and their adventures in South Park, Colorado.

South Park was more affiliated with the 2000s rather than the 90s, seeing how it only had one season before the 90s ended. - nerffan8000

18 Super Metroid

At least the fan-modding community that it inspired lives up to its hype - xandermartin98

19 Batman: The Animated Series Batman: The Animated Series is an American animated television series based on the DC Comics superhero Batman.

This show is so good, because it has Batman and his complex, sympathetic rouges gallery. - girlcool

Batman had always been overhyped.

20 Eminem Eminem, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, is an American rapper, actor and music producer born on October 17, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Eminem has sold over 300 million records making him the bestselling hip-hop artist of all time. In addition to his solo career, he is a member of D12 and (with Royce more.
21 Titanic
22 Jurassic Park

Not over hyped!

Yes it is.

23 The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The most overrated sequel made before the 2000s.

24 Alien

This is from the 80s and was only good in the 80s, please remove - xandermartin98

25 Pokémon (Franchise)

The first Pokémon film is underrated. It's like amazing. - girlcool

26 Fallout (Franchise)
27 Banjo-Kazooie
28 GoldenEye 007 (N64)
29 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
30 Super Mario World
31 Green Day Green Day are an American pop punk, punk rock, and alternative rock band formed in East Bay, California in 1986. The members include Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals and guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass), Tré Cool (drums) and Jason White (guitar) . Green Day are associated with punk rock, pop punk and alternative more.
32 Donkey Kong Country
33 PaRappa the Rapper
34 UmJammer Lammy
35 Earthworm Jim
36 Super Smash Bros
37 Crash Bandicoot

Always was an extremely average platformer series, honestly - xandermartin98

38 Chrono Trigger
39 Final Fantasy VI
40 Metal Gear Solid
41 Tomb Raider
42 PlayStation 1
43 Sega Genesis
44 Rocko's Modern Life Rocko's Modern Life is an American animated television series created by Joe Murray for Nickelodeon. The series centers on the surreal life of an anthropomorphic Australian-immigrant wallaby named Rocko as well as his friends: the gluttonous steer Heffer, the neurotic turtle Filburt, and Rocko's faithful more.

Supremely excellent show for what it is, I'll admit (just watch it by yourself, MAJOR emphasis on yourself, with the classic "suburban ennui self-reflection" perspective that comes from being an overworked 20-something struggling to survive the insanely corrupt social wasteland that modern-day America has become, or just listening to Radiohead's OK Computer for that matter, and THEN hopefully you'll understand what I'm talking about, just in case you somehow haven't already), but its fans often act as if this show literally blows Ren & Stimpy straight-up out of existence (you know, like what Super Metroid did for the original NES Metroid) when in reality it really doesn't - xandermartin98

45 Rugrats Rugrats is an American animated television series created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain for Nickelodeon.
46 Hey Arnold Hey Arnold! is an American animated television series created by Craig Bartlett that aired on Nickelodeon from October 7, 1996 to June 8, 2004. The show centers on a fourth grader named Arnold, who lives with his grandparents in an inner-city boarding house.
47 Classic Spongebob
48 X-Men (1990s Cartoon)
49 Mario Kart (Franchise)

This series is overrated in every decade it is part of.

50 Batman

In fairness, batman was not overhyped when adam west played as him. It's probably because the makers of the batman played by adam west did not make batman come off as a mary sue.

Batman had been overhyped in every decade since the first decade he was part of.
