Most Overrated Classic Rock Songs

The Top Ten

1 Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

I don't see why this song is so popular. Sorry, but it just isn't number one on any respectable greatest songs list. I can think of a long list of Led Zeppelin songs that are better than this one, and a seven mile long list of songs in general that are better than this. But this song just drowns them out; never seen anything so absurd.

We will rock you isn't Queen's best song, but it's not considered to be the greatest rock song of all time either. Stairway sounds beautiful the first 10 or so times you listen to it, but Led Zeppelin has written more rock-oriented and punkier songs than this.

A lot of people say this has the best solo ever. I disagree. It's fast, but that's pretty much it. It's a good song, but certainly not the best rock song ever like a lot of people think. And when it comes to the solo thing, Comfortably Numb is miles ahead of this

This song is so heavily over rated that it hurts. There is nothing special about this song except for how over rated it is. I just can't believe this song is regarded as one of the best rock songs of all time.

2 Don't Stop Believin' - Journey

Journey is one of my favorite bands. But this song is SO overrated. Can't we hear "Only the Young" or "Separate Ways" or "Stone in Love" for once? I go bananas every time I hear this song

So overrated! Most people think it's the only classic rock song they need to know... Ever heard of Led Zeppelin or the Who?

Separate Ways is better - Nickelstickman

Please stop.

3 Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin

Not the most overrated rock song... but definitely not "Led Zeppelin's Best Song"... not even in the top 5 in my opinion. - AlphonsoRichardson

Two chords and a lot of fluff

I think a visitor is really concerned about how much chords are used in a song. If that'd be the case, then Blitzkrieg Bop would be one of the worst songs of all time. Am I wrong? - zxm

A copy of 2 songs, it still egts more credit than any demanding song...

4 Hey Jude - The Beatles

Maybe you had to "be there". If you can't identify with the spirit of the song and the period, you probably can't appreciate the song

I love the beatles but I personaly don't think this is one of their best - RecklessGreed

Why do people like the beatles so much
the songs I only like
are Hey jude
and lucy in the sky with diamonds
i mean their musics good
maybe not the best or most unique - LeBustyBlonde

5 We Will Rock You - Queen

Not rally good. It's late, My Melancholy Blues, Spread Your WIngs and All dead, All dead are far better from this album alone, let alone the entire court of magnifence from queen

It is alright, but far too minimalist... Too simplistic... Boring really. So many Queen songs better than this.

Why the hell is Paradise City #1? - Estranged

I mean from a standpoint its an anthem that can be sung accapella
that's what makes it a great song/anthem
but for some reason its ranked as one of the best songs out there - LeBustyBlonde

6 Wonderwall - Oasis

The most overrated song ever, without a question. I know a long, long, long list of overrated songs, and a considerably long list of overrated songs by music artists that have done a lot better and have loads of underrated songs. Wonderwall, I have to say, is number one on both of these lists.

The song in itself is just uninspired drivel that people call music. What does anybody see in it?! It is a talentless song that deserves nowhere as much recognition that it got! It just cannot compare to other songs like it and cannot be called their best song. I can understand that Sweet Child Of Mine is the most popular Guns n' Roses song, even though my favourite is Paradise City, which shouldn't be on this list. I can understand that Gimme Shelter is the most popular Rolling Stones song. What I don't get is why Wonderwall is the most popular Oasis song!

Don't Look Back In Anger is no better. The second most popular Oasis song, and there's just nothing talented about it. It is ...more

This isn't classic. This isn't rock. It isn't even all that overrated. - hype

Is it bad because it has fewer chords? Just joking. This song isn't classic rock. - zxm

This song is terrible

7 No More Tears - Ozzy Osbourne

Ok Ozzy isn't classic rock. He's metal. And this is a great song with a great solo - Sabbath

I love Ozzy and this song. This is more UNDER-rated than overrated. If you’re talking about an overrated Ozzy song, it’s none other than Crazy Train

8 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Terrible does not even describe this undeserveing greatest hits song. For those who don't know this song was not even suppose to be on a night at the Opera. The band wrote a lot of songs and a whole lot of them were cut off from the album. So Freddie decided to combine 3 songs that he didn't finish and turned them into 1 song. Somehow people actually liked this stupid song and made such a big deal out of it saying "what does it mean" and "what inspired you to make it". Freddie hated how people said those things so he stopped answering any question about Bohemian Rhapsody. This song basically won the lottery with even becoming a song and then getting a lot of popularity. And finally, you know that a song is overrated when their making a movie about a band and naming it a song and not the band's name, It's a disgrace to queen. - Shaun3

Bohemian Rhapsody is hardly overrated! It's Way underrated in my humble opinion. Esp when you consider that a typical song has 3 chords, while Bohemian Rhapsody boasts SIXTY CHORDS! Plus the fact that it marries 2 such diverse genres of music as rock and opera; I mean, how Genius is that?! That's the genius of the great, the sublime, the one and only FREDDIE MERCURY.

Someone said, Bohemian Rhapsody is underrated. I've one question, when a song is considered as the best (I meant best, not one of the best) song of all time, how this song is underrated? - zxm

SO overrated! Rolling Stone rates this at #163 on its 500 best songs of all time list, which is about right.

9 Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Actually I find Free Bird is hit or miss with a lot of people. The lead is amazing but I could see where folks might think it's long and repetitious. I like it because it's a tribute to Duane Allman, but even I think it's kind of drawn out in parts.

I don't like this song, but apparently everyone else does.

Definitely more than Run Like Hell

10 Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Yeah it's overrated, but it's not classic rock. - Gruunge

This is undeserving of the top 10 of the best songs of all time. It's a heavy grunge song. And what now? - naFrovivuS

Should be at first. At least, stairway to heaven has better lyrics. - zxm

Here we are now in containers

The Contenders

11 Paradise City - Guns N' Roses

SCOM is overrated, Paradise City isn't.

12 Who are You - Who

This is nowhere near the Who's best work (Try "My Generation" or "Behind Blue Eyes" and you'll know what Classic Who is. ) -

Got to admit, I love this song. Not overrated at all! - PetSounds

An awful demonstration of Pete's post punk angst

13 Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple

Every single guitar newbie thinks they're so cool showing off that they can play only the first few notes of this song. Next time someone does that, tell them to play the solo.

Deep Purple is actually an underrated band. But this song of their's is overrated. The riff isn't that good that gets praised. I like some other songs like, Sometimes I feel like screaming, Soldier of Fortune, Child In Time etc more than this one. - zxm

Is a good song, but incredibly simple and is treated like one of the greatest songs of all time.

14 You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
15 Panama - Van Halen

The reason why this song is overrated is because this song is as good as hell! - VanHalen

Panama is UNderrated

€Jump” is more overrated than “Panama”...

16 Back in Black - AC/DC
17 (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones

A big hit in 1965, played ( and overplayed ) on the radios millions of times, known by everyone ( even by those who don't care of Rock music ). All that made this song so popular that it became " overrated ". But in a context, back in 1965, this was a really " Them against us " anthem! Just listen to those lyrics of " no satisfaction " for T.V., radio, ads, media, girl action... This was really a " revolutionary " song back in those days.

So obviously overrated...

Overrated as hell

18 Run Like Hell - Pink Floyd

THIS? Was a hit single and one of Pink Floyd's most overplayed songs? -

What?

19 I Don't Want to Miss a Thing - Aerosmith

This song is good as hell, so emotional and deep, not overrated

15 year olds should be banned from this site. This is not overrated at all - Jay_07

20 Black Dog - Led Zeppelin

More of Led Zeppelin's work needs to be recognized - theforgiventeen

21 Sweet Child (O' Mine) - Guns N' Roses

This song has been so overplayed.

Over than the riff, THIS SONG SUCKS AND NEEDS TO STOP BE PLAYED NOW!

22 Janie's Got a Gun - Aerosmith

Aerosmith is my favorite hard rock band (with GN'R); but I actually don't like very much this song. - rock2metal

23 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

I was thinking of putting "Summer of '69", the most generic rock song ever, on here but with that song at least I know some people who don't like it. I was also thinking of putting "In the Air Tonight", a boring, lifeless song, but I chose "Comfortably Numb" because a lot of people worship Pink Floyd and treat this as their best song. I don't mind Pink Floyd, in fact "Wish you were Here" is one of my favorite albums, but a lot of their stuff is a little overrated. This song on the other hand is horrifyingly overrated. It is a boring, lifeless (but then again a lot of PF's stuff is a little lifeless, but not to this extreme), and confusing song. In fact this feels like a filler song to me, and I do know the where it fits in on The Wall. I guess people like this song because it makes them feel like they are on drugs, and if that is the case I am glad I never take them.

It's not really overrated. It's an amazing song. Don't say the song is overrated just because it's the most popular Pink Floyd song. If any Pink Floyd song is overrated it's Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2 - hype

Wonderful tune. - naFrovivuS

Eh, yeah it's a good song, but listen to something like echoes(meddle) or something, and then respond to me.

24 Hotel California - Eagles

Shocked this isn't up there already. Overall falls flat, with the guitar solo at the end being nothing more than a way for him to play with himself. Eagles as a whole are an overrated band, though.

Should be #1 with a bullet. - truckturner

25 Start Me Up - The Rolling Stones

Spent 31 Weeks at #1 on the chart and is still played to death on radio today. -

26 Highway to Hell - AC/DC
27 Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
28 Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
29 A Day In the Life - The Beatles

It might have been really ambitious in the 60's, but it doesn't hold up and I don't see how this song is better than songs like While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Here Comes The Sun

30 Barracuda - Heart

Agreed - doodie

31 Jump - Van Halen
32 All Right Now - Free

Only overlooked on this websites lists

Are you kidding? This song is overrated? - zxm

33 La Grange - ZZ Top

This songs riff is good, but it is overrated. - Frizor

34 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

Most overrated song of all times

35 Can't Fight This Feeling - Reo Speedwagon
36 Bat Out of Hell - Meatloaf
