Top 10 Most Overrated Death and Black Metal Bands

Bands that are overrated from both black and death metal. Also to clarify overrated does not mean bad but rather that something gets more attention and praise then needed.
The Top Ten
1 Cannibal Corpse Cannibal Corpse is a American death metal band from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1988. The band is known for their graphic album covers, explicitly violent lyrics and song titles like "I C** Blood" The group got into mainstream after performing the song "Hammer Smashed Face" in the 1994 film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. In 1995, vocalist Chris Barnes left the band to focus on his new death metal project Six Feet Under. He was replaced by George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher of the band Monstrosity, who has remained as the frontman since. ...read more.

The band is good but it is not even close to the best death metal bands, and it is not the most brutal.
A lot of other death metal, grindcore and black metal bands are way more brutal

I agree they are overrated because I believe there are many death metal bands that are better but aren't more popular than Cannibal Corpse.

I agree but this band is as bad as people make them out to be They are talented just not better than bands like Opeth and more.

No Death Metal is more overrated then them not one comes close.

2 Antim Grahan

Overrated Garbage band their song Forever Winter barley sounds like metal at all it sounds more like (ironically) a Christmas Carol

3 Cradle of Filth Cradle of Filth are a British extreme metal band that formed in Suffolk in 1991. The band's musical style evolved from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic black metal and other extreme metal styles.

They aren't black metal

4 Mayhem Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo, regarded as one of the pioneers of the Norwegian black metal scene. The band is also known for the infamous events surrounding them including the 1991 suicide of vocalist Dead (in which former guitarist Euronymous took pictures of Dead's corpse and used one of them as the front cover for one of their live albums) and the 1993 murder of Euronymous by former member Varg Vikernes, of Burzum.

I agree but only because people claim Dead as being the best extreme metal vocalist. Attila was just as good, and Dead only appeared on two live albums and a demo I believe. Live in Leipzig is one of my favourite live albums though.

5 Morbid Angel Morbid Angel is an American death metal band based in Tampa, Florida. UK music magazine Terrorizer ranked Morbid Angel's 1989 debut Altars of Madness first in its list "Top 40 greatest death metal albums".
6 Death Death was an American death metal band formed in 1983 by Chuck Schuldiner. Death is considered to be one of the most influential bands in heavy metal and a pioneering force in death metal. Its debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, has been widely regarded as the first death metal record, while the band's driving force, Chuck Schuldiner, is acknowledged as the "Godfather of Death Metal." Death released 7 studio albums, and are the band that started the Florida Death Metal scene. They were known for their death metal classics Lack of Comprehension and Crystal Mountain. Death ended in 2001 when Schuldiner died of Brain Cancer.

This band should be number one this list. Chuck shuldiner was not that great of a guitarist

Completely overrated

7 Deicide Deicide is an American death metal band formed in 1987 by bassist and vocalist Glen Benton and drummer Steve Asheim. They are known for their blasphemous and satanic lyrics which have resulted in bans, lawsuits and criticisms from religious groups and the public. Frontman Glen Benton is also known for ...read more.
8 Burzum Burzum is an influential black metal solo project of Norwegian musician and writer Varg Vikernes. Burzum came to prominence at the beginning of the Norwegian Black Metal scene in the early 1990s. Vikernes was imprisoned for 21 years for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous, and charges of church arson. In prison, Burzum released 2 dark ambient albums recorded entirely on synthesizers. Burzum is still active to this day, but has never performed live.

As with Mayhem, it's more to do with the fanbase idolising him to death. Even Varg himself thinks his fanbase is close minded.

9 Children of Bodom Children Of Bodom was a melodic death metal band from Espoo, Finland. Formed in 1993, the final lineup consisted of Alexi Laiho, Janne Wirman, Henkka Seppälä, Jaska Raatikainen and Daniel Freyberg.

Not saying they aren't overrated but just curious: Why do you think they are overrated? Their solos or riffs are bad played? Or drumming is bad, or growling is bad performed, or screaming, or what?
You DO need to explain every item on this list and give decent reasoning. Just saying "Essentially quite overrated."... is pointless.
By the way, the dueling solo to Kissing the Shadows is one of the most technical solos in metal and is like 1:30 minutes long at a very high speed. Have a nice day.

Children of Bodom is overrated. But they aren't only a death metal band. Alexi Laiho often mixes power metal or sometimes even neoclassical metal to his songs. So, I can't say that they're strictly a death metal band. Even their best solo, Kissing the Shadows is a power metal solo.

Plus, I think that Alexi Laiho is a lot better guitarist than Dave Mustaine or Kirk Hammett.

Essentially quite overrated.

10 Napalm Death Napalm Death are a British grindcore/death metal band formed in Meriden, West Midlands, England, in 1981. While none of its original members remain in the group, the lineup of vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway, bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris and drummer Danny Herrera has remained consistent for most of the band's career.

Um I don't find this band overrated coming from someone who isn't a big fan of them.

I don't think I need to explain why for this one.

"I don't think I need to explain why for this one."
Umm, I think you DO need to explain this one and all other entries...
Napalm Death never been my cup of tea but can you explain this one for me, please?

The Contenders
11 Cryptopsy Cryptopsy is a Canadian technical death metal band from Montreal, Quebec, formed in 1988. The band has sold over 300,000 records.

Haha, more like underrated. Not many people know them but one of their albums is considered a masterpiece.

12 Behemoth Behemoth is a Polish blackened death metal band from Gdańsk, formed in 1991. They are considered to have played an important role in establishing the Polish extreme metal underground.
13 Entombed Entombed is a Swedish heavy metal band formed in 1987 under the name of Nihilist. Entombed began their career as an early pioneer of Scandinavian death metal which initially differed from its American counterpart by its distinct "buzzsaw" guitar tone.

Left Hand Path and Clandestine were great albums, Wolverine blues wasn't good as their first two, but after that they sucked

Not as overrated as other bands on this list.

This band is underrated in my opinion

14 Six Feet Under Six Feet Under is an American death metal band from Tampa, Florida, formed in 1993. The band consist of four members: founding vocalist Chris Barnes, longtime guitarist Steve Swanson, current bassist Jeff Hughell and recent drummer Marco Pitruzzella.

They aren't very good and most metal fans don't like them so I can't say they are overrated.

15 Atheist Atheist is a progressive/technical death metal band from Florida, founded in 1984 by drummer Steve Flynn and singer/guitarist Kelly Shaefer.
16 Cerebral Bore
17 Opeth Opeth is a Swedish progressive death metal band from Stockholm, formed in 1990 by David Isberg, who invited Mikael Akerfeldt into the band as a bassist. 18 Immolation
