Top 10 Most Overrated Death and Black Metal Bands

Bands that are overrated from both black and death metal. Also to clarify overrated does not mean bad but rather that something gets more attention and praise then needed.

The Top Ten

1 Cannibal Corpse Cannibal Corpse Cannibal Corpse is a American death metal band from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1988. The band is known for their graphic album covers, explicitly violent lyrics and song titles like "I C** Blood" The group got into mainstream after performing the song "Hammer Smashed Face" in the 1994 film Ace Ventura: more.

The band is good but it is not even close to the best death metal bands, and it is not the most brutal.
A lot of other death metal, grindcore and black metal bands are way more brutal - Anonymous1234

How are they overrated if everyone hates them? - Userguy44

I agree they are overrated because I believe there are many death metal bands that are better but aren't more popular than Cannibal Corpse. - Metal_Treasure

I agree but this band is as bad as people make them out to be They are talented just not better than bands like Opeth and more. - christangrant

Overrated Garbage band their song Forever Winter barley sounds like metal at all it sounds more like (ironically) a Christmas Carol - christangrant

3 Cradle of Filth Cradle of Filth Cradle of Filth are a British extreme metal band that formed in Suffolk in 1991. The band's musical style evolved from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic black metal and other extreme metal styles.

They aren't black metal

The band is also known for the infamous events surrounding them including the 1991 suicide of vocalist Dead (in which former guitarist Euronymous took pictures of Dead's more.

I agree but only because people claim Dead as being the best extreme metal vocalist. Attila was just as good, and Dead only appeared on two live albums and a demo I believe. Live in Leipzig is one of my favourite live albums though. - IronSabbathPriest

Self explantory.

5 Morbid Angel Morbid Angel Morbid Angel is an American death metal band based in Tampa, Florida. UK music magazine Terrorizer ranked Morbid Angel's 1989 debut Altars of Madness first in its list "Top 40 greatest death metal albums".

Quite overrated I'll add.

Illuid Divinum Insanus was one of the worst metal albums ever but then again Altars of Madness is one of the best ever so... - christangrant

Completely overrated

This band should be number one this list. Chuck shuldiner was not that great of a guitarist

8 Burzum Burzum Burzum is an influential black metal solo project of Norwegian musician and writer Varg Vikernes. Burzum came to prominence at the beginning of the Norwegian Black Metal scene in the early 1990s. Vikernes was imprisoned for 21 years for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous, and charges of church more.

As with Mayhem, it's more to do with the fanbase idolising him to death. Even Varg himself thinks his fanbase is close minded. - IronSabbathPriest

Explains itself to be honest.

9 Children of Bodom Children of Bodom Children Of Bodom is a melodic death metal band from Espoo, Finland. Formed in 1993, the group currently consists of Alexi Laiho, Janne Wirman, Henkka Seppälä, Jaska Raatikainen and Daniel Freyberg.

Essentially quite overrated.

Children of Bodom is overrated. But they aren't only a death metal band. Alexi Laiho often mixes power metal or sometimes even neoclassical metal to his songs. So, I can't say that they're strictly a death metal band. Even their best solo, Kissing the Shadows is a power metal solo.

Plus, I think that Alexi Laiho is a lot better guitarist than Dave Mustaine or Kirk Hammett. - zxm

I agree Alexi is a better guitarist than Hammett and maybe better than Mustaine. Alexi is one of the best guitarists in melodic death metal. Jeff Loomis joined Arch Enemy 2 years ago and he's Alexi's biggest competition. - Metal_Treasure

Not saying they aren't overrated but just curious: Why do you think they are overrated? Their solos or riffs are bad played? Or drumming is bad, or growling is bad performed, or screaming, or what?
You DO need to explain every item on this list and give decent reasoning. Just saying "Essentially quite overrated."... is pointless.
By the way, the dueling solo to Kissing the Shadows is one of the most technical solos in metal and is like 1:30 minutes long at a very high speed. Have a nice day. - Metal_Treasure

They are probably on the list because they are one of the most famous death metal bands, and for some people, famous = overrated. And a lots of death metal fans hate everything that is not so heavy and call it "pop music for gay babies" - Alkadikce

10 Napalm Death Napalm Death Napalm Death are a British grindcore/death metal band formed in Meriden, West Midlands, England, in 1981. While none of its original members remain in the group, the lineup of vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway, bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris and drummer Danny Herrera has remained consistent more.

Um I don't find this band overrated coming from someone who isn't a big fan of them. - christangrant

I don't think I need to explain why for this one.

"I don't think I need to explain why for this one."
Umm, I think you DO need to explain this one and all other entries...
Napalm Death never been my cup of tea but can you explain this one for me, please? - Metal_Treasure

The Contenders

Left Hand Path and Clandestine were great albums, Wolverine blues wasn't good as their first two, but after that they sucked

They don’t get as much love as they deserve honestly.

This band is underrated in my opinion - christangrant

Not as overrated as other bands on this list.
