I know a lot of metalheads like Mayhem, but they only had a few obscure EXTREMELY lo-fi demos with Dead. The reason he's loved is for his supposed crazy live stunts, which most metalheads had probably never seen. Dead was great, but people need to stop saying he was the best metal vocalist just because everyone else does.
If you want to hear some studio stuff I would check out the band he was in before Mayhem, Morbid. They released a demo called “December Moon”, his vocals are well captured on that. You can get the compilation album “Year of the Goat” for even more material. His vocals are less brutal and creepier than what you hear in Mayhem. Listen to this and you’ll see he gets all the praise he deserves. RIP Pelle.
