Most Overrated Metal Subgenres

The Top Ten
1 Death Metal

Depends on what context is Death Metal overrated in. A band like Cannibal Corpse is easy to be picked on, considering it's the most popular Death Metal band and probably the genre mascot. Recent bands like Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom could also be victim if one considers the popularity and attention they receive compared to other Death Metal bands.

I hate Cannibal Corpse and I do respect Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy to an extent. These points do not make up for me consensus.

I disagree because Cannibal Corpse is the best band ever. Their albums are a treat to the ears from back to front - no other band on this planet have such a flawless discography. I do agree that rest of the bands from this sub-genre are highly overrated with the exception of one good album from the other band i.e. ("Cause of Death" by Obituary).

I kind of agree and kind of don't. I feel that it gets a really bad rap by some people and there are bands that I really like, like Death and Gojira, but there are other bands that I think are overrated and wouldn't touch with a fifty foot pole.

I disagree. There are many really talented musicians in death metal. I would even say that currently the most talented metal musicians are in progressive and technical death metal - Opeth, Obscura, Ne Obliviscaris, and many more.

2 Deathcore

What is deathcore? With rare exceptions, deathcore musicians are death metal wannabes who can't play death metal:
1) they can't play guitar solos and replace them with breakdowns. When metal guitarists sweat the most, deathcore guitarists take a break. This is the breakdown. Breakdowns are typical for punk and not for metal;
2) most of them can't actually growl and replace death growls with pig squeals;
3) Jared Dines' video Deathcore VS Death Metal says it all and he kinda admits death metal wins, even though he's a deathcore vocalist and drummer for 3 deathcore bands.

I'll admit that a lot of the fans are mouth breathers who think it's the most hardcore thing imaginable. But to me it sounds heavier than death metal. It may be a punk subgenre, but it is also a death metal subgenre. Same as how folk metal has folk in it.

Yep, overrated. But again, it's probably an extreme subgenre of punk and not metal - in deathcore usually "core" (punk) is more than metal. And most of the deathcore bands aren't on Encyclopaedia Metallum, i.e. not metal (ex., Infant Annihilator, Suicide Silence).

More overhated than overrated. I agree that it's somewhat unnecessary since we already have death metal, but deathcore can be lit too.

3 Thrash Metal Thrash Metal is a Heavy Metal subgenre developed during the early 1980s and an early precursor of Extreme Metal. Thrash Metal features a faster and more aggressive guitar work than Traditional Metal with shredding and double-bass drums and can range from melodic singing to loud shouts.

The English band, Venom is credited for laying the groundwork for Thrash Metal with their debut album "Welcome... read more

To be honest, even if it is my favorite Metal subgenre, I get why people call Thrash Metal overrated. Heck, my favorite band (Metallica) cannot be spared and I'm not denying it. It is a great genre nonetheless, but Thrash did have a downfall period during the 1990s, which did signify fans becoming bored of it and moving on to a more fresh taste. It would also explain why the Big Four (Plus Testament) tried to be experimental during that time.

Thrash metal was very important. I wouldn't ignore the fact that death metal was very much based on/inspired by thrash metal. Later death metal created its own interesting subgenres - melodic, progressive, technical, symphonic,...

Very overrated, I can't think of a band in the genre where at least half the albums aren't bad. Later albums by thrash bands rehash their old ideas. I'll never understand why people call it versatile.

4 Metalcore

Yep, it's very overrated. Moreover, it's very debatable whether it's metal at all because metalcore usually has more punk than metal elements. And metalcore is even too poppy at times. Metalcore isn't metal in my opinion. Also, most of the metalcore bands aren't on Encyclopaedia Metallum, i.e. not metal.
There are interesting and useful things on my list Top 10 Bands that Aren't Metal According to Encyclopaedia Metallum

Metalcore does have good artists but those are few and some of them people claim are the best (I.E. Every Screamo Band Bullet For My Valentine Avenged Sevenfold) are either mediocre or just plain awful.

I'm on Metal_Treasure's opposite spectrum. I find Metalcore to be overhated actually. While not the best genre, Metal or not, there are a number of great bands, most of which are pretty underrated in my opinion.

Also, no disrespect to Metal_Treasure. I respect his opinions on music, even if they do tend to clash with mine.

Horrible poser metal subgenre filled with annoying screaming and generic guitar riffs. This is a disgrace to metal. Even black metal is better than this atrocity.

5 Black Metal

I won't say its overrated. But when I listen to black metal, my facial expression becomes like the facial expression of Jared Dines in the video of "10 guitar tricks (for beginners)". The part where he does tremolo picking.

In other words, its boring and repetitive. Kinda sounds like distorted version of flamenco guitarists. played less technically. Brutality on one note.

I really don't see how Black Metal is overrated provided that this is the most underground subgenre and the majority of the metal fans don't like it.

I do like this genre to some extent but it is overrated within the metal community

6 Nu Metal

I'm just going to say Nu Metal is both overrated and overhated. Sure there's cringe in some bands and doesn't exactly encompass what Metal is meant to stand for, but at the same time, its not as bad as many make it out to be.

In fact, most Nu Metal bands can fit right into Hard Alternative. They do share a good influence from Grunge and Alternative Rock, with slight traces of Metal, so I'd consider it.

I do like this genre but it is overrated people/bands from this genre always are at the top of best metal lists when other people/bands from other genres that are usally more talented should be there but aren't

Dammit. This is going to end up just like any other negative metal genre list. They sure as hell are not overrated. They are the worst on worst metal subgenres, it just doesn't make sense

Yes - very very overrated. I don't even wanna talk about it. Moreover, there isn't much metal in nu metal, if any. Encyclopaedia Metallum don't consider it metal, which is correct in my opinion.

7 Groove Metal

Pantera is a groove metal band and they are extremely overrated and not even good (Dimebag Darrel has some sweet guitar skills though, even though the guitars don’t sound good). At first, I though groove metal would be like groovy and danceable metal (which sounds AWESOME by the way), but it’s not. And I’m sad.

Agreed - it's very overrated.

8 Glam Metal Glam metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that features pop-influenced hooks and guitar riffs, and upbeat rock anthems.

Totally an unnecessary genre. Musicians wearing long hair, posing like girls, singing about girls. There isn't any special about their music, the music is hard rock. No offense, but I have never seen any kind of immaturity in metal what I saw in glam metal. Thank God it died.

"Glam Metal" is just a nickname for Hard Rock bands who just so happen to have Heavy Metal elements in their heaviest songs (E.g. Guns N' Roses). I don't tend to categorize bands in "Glam Metal" because the term just seems too arbitrary.

Also kind of overhated. Even I have doubts about this, but it can be a great gateway to mainstream listeners to real metal.

I don't like it at all but it's not really overrated anymore. I don't think anyone likes it anymore.

9 Alternative Metal Alternative metal is a music genre that infuses heavy metal with influences from alternative rock and other genres normally associated with metal.

Most of the songs have no metal at all. Sometimes I think music experts put the label 'Alternative Metal' when they can't identify the subgenre, LOL

Many of the bands in the Alternative Metal genre do have traces of Alternative Rock, Grunge and Metal.

If you ask me, I would bring back the term "Hard Alternative" just in case. It does feel like a more accessible term and it might apply to Nu Metal.

10 Hair Metal

Hair Metal and Glam Metal are synonyms. Also, it was mistakenly called "metal" - it's just the 80s version of hard rock.

It rules though.

The Contenders
11 Pop Metal

I'm afraid there's no such metal subgenre: "pop metal" has a contradiction in the name - if something has pop in it, it certainly isn't metal.

IronSabbathPriest, I am happy at least one more person thinks Dream Theater's The Astonishing isn't metal. I think it's a rock opera.

Y'know what, if pop rock exists, then I'd say this is a possibility. Dream Theater's The Astonishing is sorta pop metal.

Power metal could sort of count as this.

12 Technical Death Metal

Just because it's technical does not mean it's good. I mean look at Megadeth.

What about Nile?

13 Brutal Death Metal
14 Grindcore

This lists logic: Black Metal is more overrated than Nu Metal even though Nu Metal has a bigger fanbase and is usally very high on best metal lists
By this logic Grindcore is also overrated

Its not the most well known genre but if Black Metal is here so should this genre

No it is not overrated, but it is trash and is hated ever so rightly

15 Traditional Heavy Metal

Why do people worship this crap? It's so overrated! It's not even heavy enough! Thrash and Death metal are not overrated because they are heavy and amazing! This genre isn't even metal, it's just boring hard rock compared to bands like Slayer and Death.

Consider me commiting blasphemy but this is one of the least interesting subgenres of metal to me. Most of the bands sound way too similar for me to actually want to listen to them all the time. It comes off boring, or even monotonous sometimes.
That being said, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and sometimes Dio, I really enjoy.

I disagree - without Traditional Heavy Metal none of the metal subgenres would exist. I can't imagine metal music without Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Dio. And some other important bands. Come on.

To be honest I've never really been a big fan of Saxon, The Scorpions, Accept, or even Thin Lizzy. I do have respect for the genre but I pretty much agree with what CJ said.

16 Djent
17 Melodic Death Metal
18 Power Metal

Power metal is totally epic though, especially Blind Guardian, my second favorite band. Mägo de Oz, a folk metal band that is my third favorite band, has power and even symphonic elements among many others.

19 Doom Metal
20 Industrial Metal
21 Progressive Metal
22 Symphonic Metal

There is good symphonic but the rest is like "opera time, start the keyboards"

23 Screamo

It's a version of Metalcore that many people consider it the most hardcore thing ever

Screamo is bad but it isn't a metal subgenre - it's a version of emo, and both are punk developments.
It shouldn't be on this list.

24 Gothic Metal
