Most Overrated Oscar Winning Movies

The Top Ten
1 Slumdog Millionaire

This movie is total crap. If made by an Indian director in Hindi - it would have been a total flop. Just because it was made in English by a famous director, and had included exaggerated western stereotypes of India - it became a hit. Even Rehman's music in that movie is at best average compared to his other works.

I enjoyed the film quite a bit. The acting was good, the direction was strong, and the resolution was satisfying. It was a contrived and manipulative film but I feel that it was the best of the available nominees. Yes, The Dark Knight was the superior film.

This movie sucks, bored out of my mind, THe Dark Knight should have won, I mean critics loved it, regular joes loved it. It was a visually and mentally engaging film the Dark knight. Slumdog should have got nominated for 8 razzies instead

What on earth happened to Danny Boyle? I miss the years when he made great films such as Trainspotting and Shallow Grave. This film had too many events and too little time to show them all. So everything in this film feels fake.

2 Titanic

Titanic was an amazing cinematic achievement. To focus exclusively on the romantic aspect of the plot (to be fair its worst element, no question) is to ignore the technical brilliance that defined pretty much every other inch of the film. Titanic was epic, sweeping filmmaking on a massive scale. The fact that the romance was weak shouldn't distract so much from the fact that the rest of the movie wasn't.

Rose still loves Jack even as an old lady who had been married for years. She would rather be with the guy she was with on a boat for a few days rather than her lifetime husband. She basically cheated her spouse her entire life.

If the sea were as deep as the story and characters put together the ship wouldn't have left and we could have watched them waiting around until air travel became viable. That I might have endured, but not this drivel.

Hey everyone, let's make a film about two people having a relationship on a boat. Yay for massive gross! Probably the most overrated film I've seen, perhaps Lost In Translation.

3 The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King

I understand that fantasy isn't everyone's thing, book purists had some complaints, and the multiple epilogues were taxing (though, if the films are viewed as a single 9 or 12 hour work, that decision is more understandable). If, however, someone honestly feels that this film didn't deserve the award recognition that it received, then I would argue that that person doesn't understand filmmaking.

NUMBER 3! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! All the oscars that his film was awarded were well deserved by it. This movie was awesome and doesn't deserve to be on the most overrated films list.

This movie was boring and it was too long. The books were good due to the lore, but the plot and characters are kind of dull. Making them into movies highlighted this.

EVERYTHING about this movie is overrated, even the SFX, it won so many Oscars just because the Academy wanted to award the commercial success of the LOTR trilogy. This movie is just bad, and the biggest travesty at the Oscars I can remember

4 Avatar

Avatar didn't win best picture, The Hurt Locker did. The movie's pretty overrated all the same.

Certainly deserved awards in technical categories but that's it.

Dances with Wolves, but with giant Smurfs from space, how original.

It doesn't even deserve a single nomination.

5 American Beauty

This movie basically defines the term "Oscar bait" by being a pretentious, quirky, artsy-fartsy film that wants to appear deeper and more important than it actually is. That said I don't have a problem with it winning best picture, I feel that it was a well-made, well-acted film that was just as enjoyable as any other up for the nomination that year.

Its probably the most pretentious, ham-fisted, self-important movie about a pedophile, an airhead wife and brainless teenagers I have ever seen. Hardly worthy of a best picture. Nothing about this movie is Beautiful. If you think so. You haven't watched many movies.

I think this movie should be the most overrated one not slumdog millionaire.. it's good but not as much as they think...

6 The Artist

I had never heard of it and I watch a lot of movies/films

5 Words: Worst movie ever

7 Forrest Gump

1994 was an extremely competitive year. Quiz Show was intellectual and fascinating, Pulp Fiction was boldly fresh and confident, The Shawshank Redemption was richly satisfying, and Four Weddings And A Funeral exists too but no one cares. It's easy to say now, with 25 years of hindsight, that Forrest Gump wasn't the important contribution to cinema that some of the other films were (and for the most part, it really kind of isn't), but at the time it was a massively audience-pleasing epic, a huge moment in feel-good pop culture, and sometimes that's enough. Should it have won? Probably not, but 1994 was a gentler, simpler time (no pun intended).

This movie was great, but the Shawshank Redemption should have won the Oscar.

Pulp fiction or Shawshank should have won. I’m his film is good. Not a masterpiece, but good. Where as pulp fiction and Shawshank redemption are masterpieces.

Overly long, silly and boring!

8 Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction didn't win best picture (I'm seeing a pattern here) but I do agree that it's a bit overrated. It's fresh, funny, electric filmmaking. No question. But it's also overlong, much of its dialogue is completely unimportant (I get it, we all like the medieval thing and the royale with cheese but the vast majority of jabbering between Bruce Willis and any female character could have been cut without changing anything), and it's arguably not Tarantino's best film. Pulp Fiction was one of the best movies of its time, but I nonetheless feel that its flaws are too often gleefully ignored.

Not a bad movie but certainly not a groundbreaking or unique film like many critics said and wrote about it. Everything in that movie was copied from B-movies from the fifties, sixties and seventies ( who were really groundbreaking and unique ). Not very Original but entertaining.

Stupid movie about Nothing. It only shows how to kill, use strong language on every step, brutal lifestyle etc. This movie isn't useful and never will be. But I guess our modern generation likes such idiotic films

This movie is the worst crap to have been ever appreciated at the Oscars.. What the Hell is Titanic and American Beauty Doing in that list... they both are unforgettable classics

9 The Avengers
10 The Dark Knight

It's unbelievable that Ledger won an award for playing an overrated clown. What's worst was that the effort Ledger put in that stupid role played a role in his death.

Depends on the list, it never got an oscar for best picture.

The Contenders
11 The Danish Girl
12 Star Wars: The Force Awakens

This movie deserves the praise it gets. Those bored with it can go back to their precious prequels.

It didn't win an oscar and I wish it did

13 Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
14 La la Land
15 Gravity

One of the worst movies I have ever seen...and I've seen plenty! I can't believe that there are so many "diamonds" on this list and that was nowhere till now!

16 The Hurt Locker

The movie is simply boring even for one time viewing. This movie clearly gets momentum due to the hate-avatar attitude of critics lately. Even "up in the air" is a better movie. How come "saving private ryan" gets snubbed and "hurt locker" awarded? What?

Bland movie that only won becasue they wanted to give the award to a woman, and the academy tends to dislike successful big budget movies like Avatar.

It must 1 on list. Titanic, The lord of the rings, slumdog are good movies. They should won the oscar.

Agree totally. This movie is VERY forgettable.

17 Milk

The best picture of 2008 was Slumdog Millionaire. Milk was merely nominated.

This moving was interesting and well made, but best picture, seriously?

Milk didn't win best picture moron

18 Lion King

This movie is garbage and does not deserve to win awards.

19 The King's Speech

What was the big deal about this movie? I watched it because it won an oscar - and I was left wondering if I am missing something big time - as I just could not see why it was oscar worthy. I had this experience with couple of other oscar winners - E.G. 'silver lining playbook', 'slumdog millionare', etc... To me oscars has lost credibility - think it's a I kiss your ass you kiss mine situation at the oscars... no one looks critically at the work... all fake...

Inception, Black Swan, Social Network, The Fighter, and Toy Story 3 all deserved Best Picture more.

Boring and overrated, an expensive masterpiece theatre episode

20 The English Patient

This an awful boring and soulless film

21 Frozen

Oh wow! Someone is so blinded by their hatred for this movie and their love for The Stupidest Pice of Corporate Propagated Crap Ever- sorry, The Lego Movie- that their forgot that THE TWO CAME OUT IN SEPARATE AWARD SEASONS and WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN UP AGAINST EACH OTHER. Big Hero 6 is the movie you should be blaming for Play Sessions With Those Foot-Injuring Wastes of Plastic: The Movie not getting its undeserved Oscar.

"Most overrated movie in history"? Try the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy. And I don't even like "Frozen", I just acknowledge that there are worse and more overhyped movies.

Thank you TheTopTens you are correct about this stupid movie too overrated and for you annoying creatures shut the heck up being so stupid
-Edgar

I wanted DM2 to win, but this stupid movie won, I was shocked, DM2 was a million times better, this one had bad humor and was lame, it's far too overrated.

22 Gladiator
23 Out of Africa

-very boring, nearly fell asleep. The characters are unsympothetic, the plot comes and goes and it is hard to keep track of what is going on although the movie is incredibly slow

Meryl Streep is the most overrated actress. This oscar winning movie proves it.

24 Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
25 The Iron Lady

I can't believe that a movie who nobody cares about can win an oscar. Honestly, who cares about corrupt politicians ( they even didn't show that in this movie and instead they were praising her ). The critics ( who are as usual affraid to write something bad about a movie when Meryl Streep plays in it ) said that this was a movie about the woman behind her political career. In other words they meant ; it's a crap movie but we can't write anything bad about it because Meryl Streep is in it and we have to keep our reputation of serious critics. Get real! Like this is a movie who everybody will talk about in twenty years as a masterpiece!
