Rock while being a respected genre. Has a few overrated subgenres. None of these subgenres are bad they just get too much attention. Also I'll be including Metal subgenres because if it isn't obvious enough Metal is a subgenre of Rock.

The Top Ten

1 Screamo
2 Metalcore Metalcore
3 Nu Metal
4 Thrash Metal Thrash Metal Thrash Metal is a Heavy Metal subgenre developed during the early 1980s and an early precursor of Extreme Metal. To be honest it depends on the band

Example: Megadeth, Anthrax are overrated

But: Annihilator, Coroner are underrated - christangrant

For me I only like a few bands from this genre Jimi Hendrix Experience and Pink Floyd are awesome and deserve praise for being groundbreaking - christangrant

This is the only one I agree with on this list with maybe Psychedelic as a 2nd

Its not bad but too repetitive for my taste

The rest in my opinion deserve praise aside from a few bands in those genres - christangrant

10 Heavy Metal Heavy Metal Heavy Metal music is a sub-genre of rock music that originated in the late 1960s-70s, featuring more distorted and heavier instrumental work and darker lyrical themes. I wouldn't say this is overrated, because most bands in this genre are awesome (Especially Dio, Post Ozzy Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon,) and its influence another reason it deserves praise - christangrant

Well Heavy Metal and Alternative Rock are the best Rock subgenres but both can be overrated. There are a lot of overrated bands in this genre but a lot of underrated ones too.-DarkBoi-X

The Contenders

11 Hard Rock Hard Rock Hard Rock is a subgenre of rock music known for having heavier guitar riffs/solos. It originated around 1964-1965 with various Garage Rock bands.
12 Alternative Rock Alternative Rock Alternative rock is a style of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s. In this instance, the word "alternative" refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream rock music.
13 Death Metal Death Metal

I'm just going to say this you may not agree with me but the only band I would say is overrated in Death Metal is Cannibal Corpse only because their is much better bands out there, Death Metal is actually one of the most varied genres both lyrically and musically, There so many sub genres of death metal alone that it would take time to list them all, but the only share one thing: Death Growls I can understand if you don't like them Growls are a taste that takes time to get used to but once you do you'll see why people love this genre and I why I wouldn't call it overrated. - christangrant

Maybe its because they like Death Growls, but the main reason Death Metal is praised is because of the instrumentals which are some of the best in metal - christangrant

14 Power Metal Power Metal

The Cheesy Power Metal bands are overrated like DragonForce

however The ones that aren't cheesy like Edguy, Primal Fear, are underrated - christangrant

15 Symphonic Metal Symphonic Metal
16 Industrial Rock Industrial Rock
17 Progressive Rock Progressive Rock Progressive rock is a broad genre of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom and United States throughout the mid to late 1960s.
18 Progressive Metal Progressive Metal

I find Prog genres to be underrated - christangrant

But Prog bands are underrated compared to other genres, because most prog bands have the highest amount of skill and technically when it comes to rock/Metal but yet they are below bands with much less musical skill (Especially when compared to Punk genres) - christangrant
