Top 10 Most Overrated Theatrical Movies of 2017

These are some of the most over praised movies to come out this year. I’m not saying these are all bad. They’re just not as great as people say they are.
The Top Ten
1 Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

There are dumb parts. Leia floating through space, the ending (which is far and beyond the worst part of the movie), Kylo Ren not realizing that Luke was up to something. But... It's still pretty good. Force Awakens was decent enough, but needed to have been more original. Rogue One was bad. People would agree with this statement if it weren't a Star Wars movie. This, however, actually felt like it was inspired by the original trilogy while keeping it original enough to be sufficient as its own movie. People only dislike it because they want to be seen as "original" for not liking it.

"This is the reason I made this list". Hallelujah.

It is no surprise to me that the Star Wars film would become the most overrated of the year because every entry in this series ends up becoming more overhyped and over glorified than the last, and all of them (yes, ALL of them) have not lived up to that hype. There’s an entire subplot that could've been removed entirely, as it served no true purpose to the narrative at the end of the day. Like Rogue One, action scenes take up a significant portion of the film's runtime since that’s all the hardcore fans of this series really care about, so why put more effort into the Disney-infested storyline?

Super overrated and undercooked. But that’s Star Wars for ya!

This movie is the most underrated movie of all time. It does not dersever the hate it gets. It is my second favorite Star Wars movie.

Actually, a lot of people hate this movie.

2 Thor: Ragnarok

Y'know, it doesn't deserve a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. But I think that critics need to remember; simply enjoying a movie can be a big part of its quality.

This is a really good list, MegaSoulhero, as I do agree with several of these entries.

The overdose of humor in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was unbearable to sit through, but it’s even worse here because it’s completely out of place. Thor is not supposed to be a comedic, goofy character the way Deadpool and Spidey are. He’s pretty serious and powerful. But here, it’s as if they’re trying to make every single film in the series a Guardians of the Galaxy clone, as that film was their most popular and beloved. Hell, they spend most of the story on the Grandmaster’s planet as opposed to Asgard, the main setting of Thor.

So yeah, this was dissapointing beyond belief. Should be Number 2 right behind Star Wars (because seriously, every Star Wars Movie is overrated).

NONE of the Thor movies are good! That’s kinda sad. I thought that this one would actually be the Thor movie I’ve been waiting for. Instead, they decided to turn a movie about the destruction of Asgard into a comedy! Why? I have no idea! But apparently, people love it. It didn’t live up to the hype for me. I love when Marvel puts humor in their movies. I hate when the humor takes over the story. It actually ruined serious moments. Like at the end. Korg made such an idiotic and cliché joke at what should’ve been an emotional moment! Everyone competes to be the comic relief! Guardians 2 and Thor: Ragnarok put have a problem with their tone. So yeah. It’s not very good. Hopefully Black Panther will be better.

3 Spider-Man: Homecoming

Most overrated Spider Man movie. Spider Man 2 is the best Spider Man movie. Spider Man 1 and 2 are the true Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man Homecoming is just okay. Nothing but not nothing remarkable either.

Most superhero movies today focus on saving the world or universe or whatever. This is immensely refreshing, as it only focuses on one city.

A lot of people say this is the best Spider-Man film. It’s not. Spider-Man 2 exists. While this isn’t a bad movie, it’s not exactly great. First of all, I’m not a fan of Spider-Man’s suit. The thing that makes Spider-Man’s suit so special in the other films is the fact that he made them and they were simple. This one, which was made by Tony Stark, is too high tech. Spidey is supposed to be his own hero. They also managed to ruin some of the characters. Flash Thompson is very annoying. Doesn’t even seem like a bully. Just an annoying guy trying to act like a bully. They even ruined MJ! I was kind of angered by that. The plot twist involving the villain seemed like a last minute idea. And what are the odds of that thing even happening? The movie has a lot of problems, but it was still enjoyable. Just not as enjoyable as everyone says it is.

4 Kong: Skull Island

This movie is garbage. It’s just a cash grab. Why does everything need a remake? I’ve never been a fan of King Kong, but the franchise deserves better than this. It just surrounds you with nostalgia while having some of the blandest characters in any film to come out this year. The only good parts are when King Kong is in action, and even those scenes aren’t really that enjoyable. The visuals look like trash. There are times when you can see that there is a green screen. It doesn’t look convincing. The human characters are unbearable! If they’re gonna make a King Kong movie that focuses on human characters, they need to at least make them likeable. I didn’t like any of them. The movie was terrible. I did not enjoy it at all.

5 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

This is by far my favorite MCU movie. It's a funny action movie, which is a pet peeve of MegaSoulhero, I suppose. But it's important to remember; comic relief is part of what make modern superhero movies good. Back in the early 2000s, every superhero was trying to be edgy, which worked exactly twice. This still focuses on the plot, but because it has more jokes, people think it's trying to be a comedy. But is that really a problem? Jokes on the side were starting to become cliched. By giving them more of a focus, the movie deviates from the norm. And Yondu's death? That was easily the saddest moment in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. They spent a good chunk of the movie exploring his relationship with Peter, only to kill him off saving Peter. Marvel has been declining on average, and it's safe to say they will never top this (especially with Infinity War, that doesn't really look impressive to me).

After Guardians of the Galaxy, a comedy movie that still focuses on the story and drama, we get Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a comedy movie that MOSTLY focuses on the humor! It’s nothing but jokes! It’s almost as if they think the jokes are what we loved about the first movie! No! That’s only part of the reason! It also has a great story as well as dark and serious moments. I’d be surprised if anyone said they watch Guardians of the Galaxy just for the jokes. But if they do, then this is their movie. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some pretty dark moments in the movie. Just not a lot of them. And some of those serious moments get ruined by jokes. And most of the humor comes off as childish. Especially some of Drax’s lines. Also, that seemed to be the only thing Drax was good for in this movie. He doesn’t really do anything other than make stupid jokes. The only characters that are actually used quite a lot are Peter, Rocket, and Yondu. They have all these ...more

6 The Fate of the Furious

I hate every Fast and the Furious movie. They all feel the same. It’s just car chases, car crashes, and not a lot of story. This is no exception. Fate of the Furious is just as bad as the other films. All of the characters aren’t likeable in the slightest. They’re all very forgettable. Even the action scenes are a mess. The visual effects were all over the place. The story is very weak and the movie just wants to focus on the action. They can have a bunch of action scenes as long as the story is good. Which it isn’t. If you want to see an actual good car chase movie, just watch Baby Driver. It’s basically Fast and the Furious done right. The action scenes are all practical and they are excellently choreographed. It’s what this entire franchise should’ve been.

7 Beauty and the Beast

Second most overrated movie of the year in my opinion. I really do not like Disney remaking their own animated movies, and this movie is why. While it's not bad, it still gives me absolutely no reason to watch this movie over the original animated version. The singing is also clearly autotuned for a lot of the actors and that annoyed me.

Why does this movie exist? Beauty and the Beast didn’t need a remake. It still holds up pretty well. It’s ironic that the animation in that movie looks better than the animation in this movie. This remake is just the same movie but with terrible CGI, tons of filler, pointless new songs, and bad acting. Emma Watson was HORRIBLE in this movie! Wow! The remake fixes plot holes from the original film while also creating bigger plot holes. Whenever the Beast was on screen, I never believed that he was actually there. It makes it hard to feel the connection between Belle and the Beast. In the animated film, it worked because they were both animated characters. Here, one’s an animated character, and the other one is an emotionless actress. Emma Watson shows very little emotion. The original Belle was a lot more expressive. Even Paige O’hara’s singing had a lot of emotion in it. Emma Watson just stands around and sings with zero emotion. I don’t know why Disney keeps remaking ...more

8 Alien: Covenant

Everything after the first Alien movie has been underwhelming. I was honestly excited for this. This was one of the biggest disappointments to come from 2017. It just felt like a cash in. It has a big budget, but doesn’t really do anything new. It also has such dumb moments. The characters are complete idiots. Alien was such a great movie. This didn’t feel like a proper Alien film. It felt like a fan made film. All I have to say is don’t watch it. If you’re a fan of Alien, this will disappoint you.

Everything after Aliens was underwhelming.

9 Split
10 The Emoji Movie

This is overhated rather than overrated. It may be a commercial success but received major criticism making it a major critical flop, therefore, a sequel may not happen or was cancelled.

Most underrated animated movie to ever exist besides Foodfight!

Someone doesn’t know the definition of overrated. Also, before someone says something about how it’s overrated because it was a box office success, the only reason it was a success was because of all you people seeing it ironically.

The Contenders
11 My Little Pony: The Movie

I like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. So it makes me sad that I hate the movie. When you’re making a movie based on a show, you’re not supposed to just think about the fans. You have to take into account that some people who haven’t watched the show might be watching this movie. Like most critics. The movie does a terrible job at introducing the characters. People who haven’t watched any of the episodes might be very confused of what’s going on. I also found the movie to be cliché and predictable. Almost everything I knew was gonna happen actually happened. It even uses a lot of elements from Disney movies. Like that flying CGI pirate ship. There’s even a cat character who sings a song that’s kind of similar to Friend Like Me from Aladdin. The Storm King was basically a Hades ripoff! It’s trying too hard to be a Disney movie! Oh yeah, and there’s a scene involving mermaids which is basically just The Little Mermaid. They clearly only put mermaids in this movie ...more

12 Wonder Woman

I've already talked about why I think this movie is the most overrated movie of the year, but I'll say it again! Yes, this is way better than the garbage DC movies of 2016 and Justice League, but it's still far from being a masterpiece like people claim this to be. Some of the dialogue in this movie is absolutely terrible, and so is most of the CGI and green screen. I felt like my eyes were straining during the final battle scene! And I usually don't mind twist villains, but in this movie it was laughably ridiculous! I still think it's a decent movie though, because the acting by Gal Gadot and Chris Pine is great and the second act of the movie shines, but holy mother of God is this movie overrated!

13 The Shape of Water
14 Logan
15 It
16 The Lego Ninjago Movie
17 Despicable Me 3
18 The Lego Batman Movie
19 Mother!

It's interesting visually, and quite scary, but not very well written. Decent at best.

20 Jeepers Creepers 3
21 Jigsaw
22 Rough Night

23 Murder on the Orient Express
24 Cars 3
