Top 10 Most Overrated Video Game Genres
Yes, subgenres also count.(also, no, indie technically isn't a genre)
Call Of Duty might not be the WORST thing on Earth, but being one of the absolute most generic and uninteresting things on the face of the Earth doesn't exactly make it one of the BEST either (and yeah, legendary FPS masterpieces like Bioshock, TF2, Half-Life, the Borderlands duology, the Doom trilogy, Timesplitters, Metroid Prime, the original Halo trilogy and Bad Company 2 pretty much only happen every once in a blue moon when compared to all of the nonstop shovelware flooding the genre like an endless sea of casualized compost)
This is really the most overrated genre. Its like #1 when its just plain point and click shoot only. Its never becoming obsolete even after 25 years since DOOM was invented.
Never changes except the graphics, its all about point your gun and shoot.
Just watch AVGN's "Atari Sports" episode; no more needs to be said
Yes, Undertale technically counts as one of these in its own way, but I'm talking more about games like Gone To The Rapture, where gameplay is basically literally nonexistent
Personally, I think RPG's get WAY too much praise compared to other genres, though RPG's aren't bad.
Kingdom Hearts is the worst. All other RPGs (as well as games of other genres, too) are good.
Try roblox versions... *shudders*
Especially The Witcher series!
Even BEFORE the ungodly massive Internet uprising of Slender, Five Nights At Freddy's and those stupidly overblown videogame Creepypasta adaptations (Ben Drowned, Sonic.exe, etc), I always thought this genre was kind of lame...
when games went specifically for IT and nothing else, that is; I always found it WAY more interesting in games like Half-Life and Metroid where it was more of an ACTUAL surprise, personally
Let me put this into laymen's terms: for every classic side-scrolling masterpiece that Nintendo, Capcom, Sega and Konami put out back in the good old NES/SNES days (Castlevania Series, Mario World Duology, Contra Series, Metroid Series, Mega Man Series, Earthworm Jim Duology, Classic Sonic Trilogy, Mario Bros Trilogy, Duck Tales Adaptation, Sparkster Duology, Alien Soldier, Donkey Kong Country Trilogy, Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Gunstar Heroes, Wario Land 3-4, etc)...
there were at least three horribly defective, mass-processed turds squeezed out by LJN and the like (NES X-Men, Wolverine, Beetlejuice, Last Action Hero, Jeykll & Hyde, Nightmare On Elm Street, NES Friday The 13th, NES/SNES Terminator Series, Bill & Ted, Wayne's World, Back To The Future, Ren & Stimpy Games, Rocko's Modern Life: Spunky's Dangerous Day, NES/GameBoy Spider-Man, Lester The Unlikely, GameBoy Return Of The Joker, Dark Castle, Bubsy, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout, Hotel Mario, Zelda CD-i ...more
Yes, the Phoenix Wright and Danganronpa franchises ARE very much instant modern-day classics (as well as Stein's Gate and the like), but if you're looking for REAL standout games in the genre beyond what I just mentioned, you really aren't going to find all that many outside of Tales From The Borderlands and The Walking Dead Game
(cough) the Parappa/Lammy franchise having its own fully dedicated furry fandom on the Internet despite being about maybe three-and-a-half hours long IN TOTAL and having basically zero even remotely developed personality traits for literally ANY character in it besides Lammy herself (cough)
That, and also, Guitar Hero and Rock Band are just completely soulless cash-cows whose developers REALLY need to get a grip on themselves to say the least; in fact, I actually kind of feel REALLY bad for those two franchises in particular, now that I think about it
No explanation needed for this one. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite made this luck-based genre become literally the most popular thing since Mario, Star Wars, The Simpsons and Michael Jackson combined.
Don't get me started.
Again, some of the visual novel ones are actually quite good
(cough, indie games, cough)
(cough, modern-day Bethesda, wheeze)
